Our team explains Thundermail and Thunderbird Pro

@OctaviaConAmore It's not too clear whether donations to the new MZLA entity are earmarked exclusively for #Thunderbird development, or can be harvested by the parent organization to fund other projects.

I'd want to know because recently I've been donating to Thunderbird and I wouldn't like my donations to be redirected to #Firefox, given its current leadership and direction.

@thunderbird is this known issue with the rebranded #K9?

I composed a message while out and about, but the message didn't send because my mobile provider has ended up on #Spamhaus #XBL. The message sits in the #Thunderbird Outbox.

On getting home to my WiFi network (whose internet connectivity is provided by an entity which is not my mobile provider) and attempting to resend the message in the Outbox, the message still fails to send, with the same error. However any email composed and sent while on my home network is sent reliably.

What's going on there?

The bird is out of the bag! We're introducing Thunderbird Pro (you already know Appointment!), a set of productivity AND privacy boosting services. And that includes...*drum roll*...an email service we're calling Thundermail. Find all the info in this excellent article:

"Retain users with convenience, honesty, and kindness."
This is at the core of what we do at @thunderbird and it drives our features implementation.
Sometimes we fail at that, we're aware of it, but we're human and we always try to do better.

As promised, here is an interview with @ryanleesipes from #Thunderbird, on the whole #Mozilla and #Firefox terms of use situation.

We talk about why this had to happen, how Thunderbird will handle their own Terms of Use, what's happening at Mozilla, and what's changing.

I can switch browsers easily enough. However, I have decades’ worth of email in #Thunderbird. I’m more worried about that. Have they added terms of (dis)service to that app yet?

The best thing that made my day 👏 #thunderbird my best email client on my phone qith F-Droid 🥹

👀 at this:

mozilla.org/en-US/about/leader…

I'm baffled about the myriad of @mozillaofficial structures, amount of directors / C-level people & how to rhyme 'investing in privacy-respecting advertising; with 'draw a bigger circle of supporters over the long run.'

As a long time Mozilla supporter, I was already unhappy about the direction of the last years & this does certainly not bode well for the future. 😞 😩

#XMPP enthusiasts out there: what would you say the ultimate Achilles heel of the XMPP ecosystem is, at present? Fragmentation of clients? What?

My sense is that it's this: when one goes to store an XMPP address in one's addressbook, there doesn't seem to be standard way to store an XMPP address. #Android doesn't have that as an allowable field, and #Thunderbird and #Nextcloud have an "Instant Messaging" field, where the type can be set to "XMPP". But are these two compatible with each other when trying to sync between them? Edit: Yes, but there's a catch: *the XMPP address must be prefixed with "xmpp:"*

So "user@foo.bar" is not an OK XMPP address, but "xmpp:user@foo.bar" is.

Then to make matters worse, now there's a wish to change the labeling of "XMPP Address" to "Chat ID": gultsch.social/@daniel/1140129…

It might be a long time before the address synchy-ness ever works again between Android <-> #Davx5 <-> Nextcloud <->Thunderbird

Note: Android allows a "Jabber" type for an IM address, where you *don't* prefix the address with "xmpp:".

(#DeltaChat gets to gloat hard here, as they have plain-old email addresses)

全然少額だけど、ふと #Thunderbird にお布施した

#TIL that #Thunderbird lets me set #filters to move an #email to a particular place *when* I archive it, rather than immediately! So I can still read the emails as they come in, and then hit "archive" to have them automagically filed away 📁️

There are other triggers too, besides "as soon as the email comes in" and "when I archive" that I haven't explored yet. Thunderbird rocks! :thunderbird: ✨️
