In case you missed it earlier this week, Science Briefs Edition 24 has 20 stories on how science and medicine apply to blindness. worldblindherald.com/science-b…

An amazing article about the treatment and understanding of #blindness in the middle ages

@IzzyOnDroid #opensource at its best:

I recently installed vector pinball from @fdroidorg - great to kill some time, and especially fun because of the sound effects and background music. Out of curiosity I followed the link to the README in it's github repo. In it, the author thanks the guy who added the sound effects and music, who wanted to try out a sound library for android and therefore sought out a silent open source game and created sounds and music for it. He wrote an article about it here: twittering.com/webarchive_arti…

So thanks to this exemplary #FOSS collaboration I'm having a good time, whenever I have a five minute break.

¹ oops, 9. 1 update had to be rolled back as my scanner yelled an alarm due to added trackers – a no-go in a root app caring for backups of personal data. Issue opened upstream, updates temp-disabled.

For #Linux folk, I have a list of my common typographic symbols using the Alt Graph & Compose keys, hosted on @Codeberg, derived from @aral blog post ar.al/2018/07/18/typographical…

Might be useful

To the Compose list you might wish to add one very useful combination: (x)

With "x" being any alpha-num. Great e.g. with screenshots where you numbered a sequence of actions: ① click here, ② enter whatever, ㊷ don't overdo it 😝 and so on. Ⓐ I find that very practical, Ⓑ I use it frequently. And as you mentioned super-script, there's also ₀subscript₁for₃numbers (_1, _2 etc) :awesome:

/usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose for more 😝 & WinCompose for Windows folks…

@Archos :distros_arch: :matrix: @Petr Řezníček :apple_inc: Podľa mňa je to fér. My, čo si chceme inštalovať vlastné servery môžeme si to zaplatiť vlastným pričinením. Tí, čo chcú utratiť doláre, si môžu všetko pohodlne vyklikať a nastaviť z pohodlia klienta beeper a zas nemajú starosti s databázou, hostingom, údržbou a pod.

Here's an early look at some fun content we're launching next week!

We're calling it "Meet The Team." It's a series of conversations with each member of the #Thunderbird team, about stuff like:

☑️ When they fell in love with tech or software programming.

☑️ What attracted them to #OpenSource.

☑️ What their day-to-day looks like hacking on Thunderbird

☑️ And whatever else we decide to ask them and they're willing to answer!

We'll start with @alecaddd's origin story... Stay tuned for more!

Wow, Eugene Stoner, inventor of the M16, was 35 years old when he designed it (this was the result of years of ideas and hobbyist testing and the earlier AR10). It's been in service for 60 years. He went into the Marines and later spent years in a machining shop, which is where he learned how to design based on processes in the real world. He mentioned other engineers without that experience suffered despite their degrees. He was a high school graduate.

Interesting to hear directly from him. Particularly criticized Army substituting the powder and not strictly defining ammunition specs during initial deployment to Vietnam.

The importance of cross-domain experience:

"For example, consider Eugene Stoner, father of the M-16 rifle and acclaimed genius in the world of small-arms experts: IS "Eugene Stoner was a genius. An engineering genius of the first order." Says one expert. "Stoner was probably the most gifted small-arms designer since Browning," says another expert.
Stoner's own explanation of his insight, however, makes clear how his creativity was an act of brokerage, moving knowledge familiar in one group to a second group in which the knowledge was a breakthrough idea. Stoner was an engineer with Fairchild Engine and Airplane Company when he entered the company's start-up prototype-gun division, ArmaLite. Before joining Fairchild, Stoner served in the Marines as an ordnance technician. Stoner's familiarity with ordnance and the use of plastics and aluminum in aircraft gave him an advantage in designing a radically new, ultra-light assault rifle, the AR-10. The novel rifle impressed Army observers in the 1955 trials to replace the World War II Garand rifle, which began a winding path that would lead to the AR- 10's des-cendant, the M-16, being used across the American military services. As Stoner explains in a 1988 interview with the Smithsonian Institute, "I think my aircraft background and experience allowed me to get into some of these light-weight materials, for instance forged aluminum receivers, which were rather unknown at the time in weapons. But it was nothing particularly new to what I'd been doing all along in the aircraft equipment, in the fiberglass and all that.""

@matt on macOS the default button in an alert dialog is indicated by a colored highlight in a color defined by the user’s preferences. Doing this kind of button rainbow is an egregious violation of the human interface guidelines in two ways: it disregards the user’s preferences and it makes it look like the enter key will simultaneously press every button.

🕵️‍♂️ Today, the Open Source Programme Office (@EC_OSPO) held a Secrets Management Hackaton for the developers from the 🇪🇺 Commission.

The goal was to remove secrets from the internal projects' codes so that more 🇪🇺 projects can become #opensource and be shared on code.europa.eu.

Recently I've found a lightweight modern #opensource #audio #recorder app for #Android called #RecordYou. I like it that much so I've attempted to submit some #screenReader #accessibility improvements.
Let me know how do you like it once it's accepted.
github.com/Bnyro/RecordYou/pul…
This is my first experience with #Jetpack #Compose so bear with me and try to suggest improvements if you can please.
