Dear Mastodon,

If you could stop suggesting that I change my carefully chosen camel case hashtags to all lowers, that would sure be swell.

You'd think Raspberry Pi of all companies would have a Mastodon presence, but they don't even have Threads bridging turned on 💀

If you find yourself following fedi conflicts and getting exhausted yet unable to look away, step back. Follow CA/B and certificate authority root program conflicts instead for a palette cleanser.

They’re the opposite of what goes on here. The issue at hand generally seems rather dry, and the parties in the wrong are generally obvious. But the fallout is fascinatingly measured, clear-cut, and diplomatic while the parties obviously in the wrong struggle to mitigate their errors as their entire business’ reputation is on the line. So there are enough stakes for it to matter, but for once you feel you have enough context and it doesn’t feel personal.

Finished @viscousplatypus’s “The Accessibility Operations Guidebook” this morning. Probably a good idea to read if you do digital accessibility and want to scale up your impact. I recommend.

WeasyPrint because holy shit they wrote a browser in Python! It beats major browsers at CSS fragmentation and paged media. And with much better (far from perfect) PDF accessibility.

The browsers I use 99% of the time are not my favorites.

A hidden catch of the new fancy EuroCity direct service between Brussels and Amsterdam: Since the train does not stop in Breda anymore, subscription holders with 100% discount on Dutch railways still have to pay for the journey from Rotterdam to the border.
Therefore the basic ticket price for such subscription holders went up almost twofold - from € 10,50 to € 20.

And of course, due to limitations of the NS international journey planner, you cannot force it to use the slower EuroCity service.

@freedomscientific In JAWS 2025, whenever I navigate in and out of lists in Microsoft Word or on a Web page, JAWS speaks the messages "entering list" and "exit list." I can find no way of disabling these announcements in the insert+V Speech Options dialog or in Settings Center; I've looked under Configure Speech Verbosity as well as the Speech and Sounds Manager. Is this found anywhere in the UI? If not, could this be added in Settings Center so that we can disable these announcements?

in reply to Brian Hartgen

@brian_hartgen Thanks for confirming. I'm going to suggest to them that this should be a verbosity option.
in reply to David Goldfield

@brian_hartgen Since going to Windows 11, I hear this all the time at work. Opening app.. Working on retrieving.... Not really necessary, this should be something that can be turned off or, as David suggested, set in verbocity settings

Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke is calling for the end of Canada’s public postal service because its workers have gone on strike.

The company’s leaders are increasingly pushing extreme right-wing positions in Canada. Gutting Canada Post would effectively end delivery in many rural and remote communities because it’s not profitable for private companies to serve them.

The White Stripes: Fell In Love With A Girl

Včera parafráze na Gondryho, tak teď Gondry sám a jeden z jeho nejslavnějších kousků. A samozřejmě je to nabušenej love song, minuta padesát, jízda. Vtipný je, že Jack White chtěl po Legu, jestli by nebylo možné ke každému CD přidat LEGO figurky jeho a Meg a oni ho odmítli, že "We don't market our product to people over the age of twelve." Tak to by dnes asi dopadlo jinak 😜

I think best ActivityPub : BlueSky analogy is X11 : SurfaceFlinger. The latter two have in common:

* Funded, capable product and engineering effort
* Open source bug no RMS vibes
* Many more users

The former two have:

* Some users who choose it on principle
* Fragmentation in the layers above
* Whining from the hangers-on

But fundamentally they solve overlapping but not identical problems. That's a fine thing.

Enjoy writing those modelines!

in reply to Raph Levien

Ouch. The fact that you compared ActivityPub to X11 and not Wayland implies that you think ActivityPub is already obsolete.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt That might not have been *entirely* fair, but it is what came to mind. I was thinking more about the intractability of solving problems like "high dpi" on the X11 side and "how to move instances seamlessly" on the ActivityPub side.

The UI for the cURL GUI tool is slick.

I'd like to see less criticism of how Bluesky isn't really decentralized, why it sucks that the Bluesky app uses React (I regret that I briefly piled onto that one), etc., and more discussion of why we're losing people to Bluesky and what we're going to do about it. For my part, I'm trying not to be a toxic reply guy.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@spaduf

I just wish bridging via Fedibridge was standard. Then I wouldn’t have to still open multiple apps.

in reply to Matt Campbell

The commentary I've seen about Bsky not being decentralized has been pretty “good faith” imo. It often comes with technical discussion around what they have now and what the tech allows for. The problem is though people aren't going there because of the promise of decentralization. It's all the other features.

To your second point. What can we "do about it". Support fediverse builders ($$), stay non-toxic, continue to live and promote Fedi as a home for whoever needs to come here next.

I want to spin up a website, but I'm not sure if I want to use Vue, React, or something else 🤔
in reply to Thib

@thibaultamartin somewhat, yeah. I've got some experience with both, but I'm wondering if there's anything cooler.

One thing I'm looking for is something easily styleable, and a decent ecosystem of pre-built components. Also Typescript support is a must

@Thib
in reply to Chris 🌱

if you’re primarily hosting dynamic content, I would use a SSG.

- vanilla html/css if you don’t have many pages
- @astro if you want a really snappy website. It also has an interesting content layer to fetch content at build time. That’s what I use for ergaster.org
- zola if you’re looking for stability (you don’t need to update deps every other day). That’s what we use for matrix.org

Happy to expand if you want me to :)

in reply to Chris 🌱

I'd look into Preact with Preact Signals, small bundle size and a nice middleground between React & Vue imo.

Childhood mortality -- death before age 15 or so -- used to run at about 50%.

Every second child born, died before becoming an adult, all over the world, for as far back as we've been able to track.

We didn't turn the corner until about 1900, when science got us the germ theory. That sparked sanitation and vaccination.

A cabinet nominee (RFK Jr) who questions vaccines is frightening. A nominee who brags about not washing his hands (Hegseth) is terrifying.

Typescript having both undefined and null is mildly annoying. Semantically undefined is what you should be using to denote that something may or may not have a value in your types or function arguments. But if you're working with a non-typescript library or getting something from an external source, null is actually what you should be checking for in many cases. If you only check for undefined because that's what the types say, but you get null instead, your program explodes.

@EJGilbert After the Welcome Back message, do you see an Account button? If not, I suspect that you need to sign in or register by creating an ElevenLabs account. It's possible that this is a required step in order to import your own files. I did this as soon as I installed the app so I've never seen what happens without first signing in.
in reply to David Goldfield

I used apple to create and sign into my account because it says welcome back and then it says my name, no account button is visible for me after that.
in reply to Leianora

@EJGilbert That's very odd, as I also created an account via Sign in With Apple and I'm not paying extra for a premium account with them so I'm not sure why the app isn't providing a button to import your own files. Are there any other ElevenLabs Reader users who could comment on this?
in reply to Leianora

@EJGilbert If you use Explore by Touch, do you find the Add button near the top right corner of the screen?
in reply to David Goldfield

I found the import button. I dragged my finger along until I heard voiceover say import.

Even huge company like #google sucks in #UX so much.
This is an embeded video on a random page.
Yeah, I use #firefox containers, and everything google related is opening in one specific container to limit their spying on me. I opened the page in different container, thus I am not signed in.
Well ok, give me the link to the youtube video and I will watch it there? In the right container?
