I managed to locate my Giant Squid Audio Lab binaural microphones and the same pair of sunglasses to which I normally clipped them, and did a test recording with my Zoom H1 Essential. In it, I perform the usual stupid tasks like sticking my head in the freezer, opening and closing doors, and later take the dog outside for a brief walk and demonstrate our windchimes out back.
Some normalization was added which squished the louder dynamics a bit.

I have a lot of repos in my private gitea server because I mirror repos I care about accessing locally
well, it's come to the point where loading my dashboard after login takes somewhere between 4-8 seconds to render the page... the template it says renders in a dozen or so milliseconds, but the page portion is really high
so I enabled all the redis caching options.
It got better. 1.5 - 2 seconds now.
I just migrated the gitea database to my postgresql server
Now it loads in 25ms
Like holy shit batman, that's a world of difference
@jae I could probably disable the redis caches now and let it do the default in-memory and in-db, but considering that it's only using 11MB I guess I don't care... lol ...
would be worth trying i think. but like you said redis consumes trivial resources. i try to use it when i have simple structs or for configuration backend. have you used valkey? recently swapped and no regressions. in some ways it benchmarks better but benchmarks are like brochures.
@jae yeah I prefer valkey. The benchmarks aren't a lie, traditional Redis is single threaded which is obviously problematic if you care about it ever being able to use more than 1 CPU core
However, pinning the work to one core means you have a better chance of the kernel / NUMA implementation allocating memory on the local memory controller which will keep the memory accesses as low latency as possible
With Valkey it's possible it needs to read from memory attached to another CPU and that could be significant under heavy load
Well, guess that just means if you're trying to use all your hardware for a busy Redis workload you need to be smart about the hardware you pick

@jae What were they doing that was causing the query to be so slow? I've had the exact opposite experience with SQLite, ime most performance issues with it come down to a lot of software engineers not understanding how SQL databases work under the hood and doing crazy O(n²) queries, doing loads of joins, not using indexes, etc
@scathach @jae I have no clue what the cause was for my specific performance issue, but the changes they made in the next release that I installed after I solved my problem were described in the changelog as:
Add cache for common package queries (#22491) Move issue pin to an standalone table for querying performance (#33452) Improve commits list performance to reduce unnecessary database queries (#33528) Optimize total count of feed when loading activities in user dashboard. (#33841) Optimize heatmap query (#33853)
Other people had also been complaining about long page load times, sometimes up to almost 15 seconds. Allegedly these changes made it fast for them again.
Well, for me on Postgres this release made it slightly slower but it's still so fast now I shouldn't complain ...
@jae @scathach other than people being obsessed with the license change, I don't see any point in using Forgejo. They haven't added any meaningful changes and in some cases they were slower than Gitea to fix things. I have next to zero enthusiasm for git being somehow integrated with ActivityPub / the fediverse. It's a pretty terrible idea to be honest

Looks like I picked the wrong week to start using Friendica.
Crashes across all interfaces, takes forever to load. Maybe, if you collapsed all comments by default, just maybe it wouldn't be crunching so hard. Bluesky integration fails completely. Oh well, seemed perfect for me, in the abstract. I learned quite a lot about the potential. Think I just need to make Mastodon my one stop-shop instead.
A lot of it is database bottlenecks or unoptimized databases. I'd dedicate as much buffer pool to memory for MariaDB as I could. Running Redis and tuning the php pool helps too.
@jbcarroll Yeah, it has been bogged down for days now. I wish I understood what you're saying there. Wish I could just report it as a ticket or the like. If someone were able to clear the pipes, so to speak, I'd keep trying. But really, I think I just need to find maybe a mastodon instance with more character limit, etc. (I think Friendica has more image and video capacity too. . .)

I'd try a different instance but nothing seemed workable, not above 95 health in the directory. Mostly non-English instances. No way of knowing which are fastest...
@Eric Bono I use only friendica and had never any problem. But i use it as own server-instance. So i would recomend the best way to enter the fediverse is by using own server-instances. This is also the best way in the intentioan of the fediverse. big servers attracting masses of users into their instance are more of the kind of damaging the idea of the fediverse in mimikying the big commercial things. And bluesky is not a real supporter of the fediverse, it is onyl another centralized alternative of centrlatized alternatives..

no not really I mean, apt relies on dpkg to install packages if you don't have dpkg installed there is nothing that is going to be able to install dpkg. I mean dpkg literally ships as a .deb usually these systems are bootstrapped by debootstrapwiki.debian.org/Debootstrap you can't just install dpkg without dpkg (unless you have another package manager but ubuntu is famous for using well apt and dpkg)

Hate is one of the purest emotions and also one of those that people usually are unable to reason with. It's very polar for most people. That's why you very rarely see people on both sides of politics that can understand their opponent, or work with them on topics they don't inherently both agree with. And that's where I think this tendency to alienate people comes from; You are either with us, or against us; I either like you, or I hate you.
