So we JUST finished this panel on meaningful change and measurement for engineering organizations and you can already watch it, I am in awe of these thoughtful colleagues and grateful to have had the chance to share space with Liz and Lizzie and Jennifer! What a cool time.

@matthew It's much improved, but it's always disheartening to see the threads where people continue to make false assumptions about how it works or what is even possible in this ecosystem. A few of the remaining privacy checkboxes that concern people are going to be taken care of soon, and then they'll have to invent new reasons why it's not secure enough

Meanwhile they'll keep telling people they should use Signal which only makes sense if you can actually access Signal in your country. "The best" tool being designed in a way that makes it impossible to use by people who need it most is pretty goddamn stupid

Microsoft could potentially be about to give a bunch of people on Windows 10 a free additional year of support, if certain crazy requirements are met, this is crazy what the requirements are. windowslatest.com/2025/06/24/m…

@fireborn @dhamlinmusic This, and, at least in the apple ecosystem, it's technically possible to set up your device without an apple account, for all the good it'd do. And I don't believe apple's software updates are locked behind an apple ID sign-in, are they? That's my whole issue with Microsoft's thing right now. Security shouldn't be locked behind any conditions or obligations like this to hand over data.

Hey folks - for health reasons (mine, not hers!) I may need to soon re-home my amazing cat, Smalltalk! If you live in the SF Bay Area and might be interested, please ping me! She's truly a wonderful sweet creature! (She'd do best as an only pet.)

(Update 6/27: I’ve found a couple wonderful humans and am exploring options w them. Thank you all for your help!)

so, today I found out that it's confirmed.
I've got until november to find work.
The accessibility contract that the government had is no longer going to be renewed.
The best part is, they're going to buy the accessibility tool and do all the work in house.
But don't worry, people who have had no training in accessibility, who no nothing about html or wcag should be able to do the work just fine and it'll save a lot of money in the porcess!
So, if anyone knows anyone that's hiring, please feel free to send them my way!

A very legitimate well-done to Canada for being one of the least suckered into AI garbage in the world!

"“We’re not seeing that literacy that we would like to see when we compare ourselves to our global peers, and there’s some reluctance around trusting AI and really embedding it in how we perform our day-to-day work and how we work,” said Terril."

Excellent news.

Ooof, that's really poor reporting from CTV, blithely accepting the survey's definition of "AI literacy" to include "embracing the use of AI in their daily working lives".

Literacy on "AI" should be defined by understanding what the technologies actually are (large language models, generative image models, etc), how they are dependent on their training data, their limitations in how they can generate plausible but inaccurate information, and their social & environmental impacts.

I had a great conversation with @baratunde on Life with Machines about the millions of data workers worldwide who produce the data that fuels AI. We dug into the scale of this labor, its deeply human costs, and the possibilities for something better.

You’ve probably met Torx, the star-shaped screw that has become common in our phones, consoles, and cars. But have you met Torx Plus? It's the high-tech upgrade nobody told you about: straighter walls, zero cam-out, and way more torque transfer. Sounds great, until you try to open your gadget and realize your trusty T5 doesn’t fit anymore.

We explain the difference between Torx and Torx Plus on our blog: ifixit.com/News/110702/torx-pl…

Trust me, if it happened in Ontario, it happened here in Québec, and across Canada! Corporate lobbyists and apologists for corporate landlords and investors are trying to say they're not to blame for the housing crisis.

If you're a landlord renting out a property for 3x-5x what it would've rented for ~5 years ago, you're the problem, too.

And you should be ashamed of yourself.

Your tenant shouldn't pay all your bills w/ the rent they pay...

China installs more solar in 1 month than the total energy the US uses

China installed its highest solar power capacity for a single month in May.

back-of-the-envelope calculations, 71 GW is more power than the entire US uses (on average). This is why our electricity is, on average, 2.5-3 times more expensive. This will lead to advantages in AI, production, etc. Cheap energy = cheap everything else.

American public approval used to surge after something like this to show either some real or fake patriotic support, then ebb when reality (and US deaths) roll in.

That Trump has this level of disapproval now is a bad sign for him and a great one for sanity, because regardless of how you feel about the countries involved, he possesses no sanity or demonstrated ability to handle a complex situation.

Considering how GNOME Color Manager's support for calibrating scanners (and printers?) has been broken for many years, and how it seems like the remaining code might get ripped out entirely from GNOME Control Center as a result, I have filed a new #GNOME app idea, in the wild hope that someone might find this interesting enough to create a standalone utility app for creating ICC color profiles for your photo scanners and printers: gitlab.gnome.org/bertob/app-id…

@hub Hmm I don't think I mentioned display calibration in this app idea ticket, but I sure do wonder on a regular basis how DisplayCAL will fit in the new Wayland color management system, and about its general state of development/maintenance. I haven't kept a close watch on it in recent times, as I presume there's a lot of dust up in the air until the new Wayland color management middleware fully lands?

A few weeks ago, @joshbressers managed to hook me up to his mic. And then couldn't manage to stop me.

He still managed to get an amazing podcast episode about what it is to be a hobbyist maintainer, why it matters to talk about it and how failing to understand this is why nearly all policies around FOSS fail to move the needle.

You can listen to it and then come tell me what you think

@bagder I mean I think a huge part of the problem is that we focus on funding.

We should probably focus on understanding the things that could make it more sustainable and efficient to maintain this stuff on a hobbyist schedule.

Like. Can we stop talking about Rust memory safety and instead talk of the tooling Rust provide and how ergonomic it is.

That funding could go invest in tool for other ecosystem to reproduce that success...

Purism- CNN Report

In a recent CNN report, skepticism surrounds the Trump Organization’s claim that its new “T1” smartphone is “Made in the USA.” Experts, including Todd Weaver, CEO of Purism, challenged the claim, citing striking similarities between the T1 and a low-cost Chinese phone, the Revvl 7 Pro 5G, made by Wingtech, a Chinese manufacturer.

Weaver emphasized the logistical and technical difficulty of building a phone in the U.S.
