Hallo von iPad Pro M5 11“. Nach mehreren Jahren mit ganz großen iPads habe ich nach Platzproblemen im Zug wieder auf die kleinere Variante mit Magic Keyboard zurückgeschaltet. Es ist sehr schnuckelig und deutlich leichter als die 13-Zoll-Variante, die ich vorher hatte. Die erfüllt übrigens demnächst in der Verwandtschaft noch gute Dienste.
Ich habe das neue iPad Pro 11“ jetzt in mehreren Situationen so genutzt wie ich auch das große vorher genutzt habe, und ich werde immer wieder daran erinnert, warum ich früher das MacBook Air 11“ so mochte. Das war schnuckelig klein, passte überall drauf und war auch ansonsten ultra mobil. Würde Apple ein kleineres MacBook Air als das jetzige 13“-Modell herausbringen, würde ich es sofort kaufen. Als Blinder ist mir die Bildschirmgröße eh wurscht.
Auch „verlaufe“ ich mich auf diesem kleineren iPad nicht mehr so viel, Elemente sind leichter direkt anzusteuern, wenn ich in einer App das Bildschirmlayout kenne. Ich war von Anfang an immer am zufriedensten mit den iPads der ursprünglichen Größen. Ich hatte auch mal mit dem iPad Mini und frühen Tastaturexperimenten dafür experimentiert, kam aber immer wieder zu dem mittelgroßen Formfactor zurück. So auch jetzt wieder. Es passt für mich offensichtlich immer noch am besten.
Und falls ihr euch jetzt fragt, warum das Pro und nicht das Air oder das einfache iPad? Die haben doch die gleiche Größe, zumindest ungefähr. Die Antwort ist ganz klar Face ID. Ich mag den Touch-ID-Sensor im Power Button nicht, wie ihn das Air und das einfache iPad haben. Ich finde Face ID zum Entsperren die für mich niederschwelligste Variante. Und das Magic Keyboard ist auch einfach unschlagbar.
@MLOSDE Ich hatte für mehrere Jahre ein iPad Air 2 mit einem Logitech Type+ Cover. Das war bis dato die beste Kombi, die ich je hatte. Dies hier kommt dem sehr nahe.

Multitasking nutze ich nicht so oft. Seit iPadOS 26 finde ich auch die Handhabung nicht mehr so schön wie vorher. Fenster nebeneinander mache ich jetzt immer über die Menüleiste und auch nur mit der Tastatur, also mit Globe-m.Ich bin aber der Meinung, dass das für VoiceOver-Nutzer noch nicht so gut umgesetzt ist und da auf jeden Fall Nachholbedarf ist.
@MLOSDE Das Gefühl habe ich auch. Ich hatte vorhin Mona und Safari nebeneinander, und während ich bei Mona alles gefühlt habe, war in Safari nichts zu fühlen durch Explore by Touch. Als ob Mona drüberliegen würde und der Rest des Bildschirms ausgeblendet wäre. Ich muss das noch mit anderen Apps probieren, ob das da auch auftritt.
Eine weitere Entdeckung für mein iPad-Setup ist die Tatsache, dass der Audio Editor Ferrite, der schon von Anfang an VoiceOver unterstützt, in Version 3 vollständigen Tastaturkürzel-Support erhielt. Mit diesem ist auf dem iPad genauso fein abgestimmtes Editieren von Audio möglich wie z.B. in REAPER auf dem Mac. Sogar Konzepte wie Items auf Tracks in REAPER finden sich als Clips auf Tracks in Ferrite wieder. Sogar das Splitten von Clips und sog. Ripple Editing gibt es dort.
Außerdem unterstützen iPads ja inzwischen auch Audio Interfaces, sodass man mit einem kleinen Audio Interface, einem XLR-Mikro und dem iPad ein sehr mobiles Podcasting-Studio bekommt, das man mit VoiceOver sehr effizient bedienen kann.
Danke, dass du deine Beobachtungen hier immer mal schilderst. Da muss ich doch mal ins Handbuch rein lesen um herauszufinden, ob die Tastenkürzel halbwegs intuitiv sind.
"Device hoarding" is apparently 2025's version of "quiet quitting"—which is to say, a phrase that doesn't mean what it sounds like, and that is being vilified despite describing an objectively good thing.
Quiet quitting, in case you have forgotten, was the practice of employees *gasp* only doing their actual job and not working during their personal time. It wasn't quitting at all, unless quitting means "continuing to do one's job."
It was blamed for productivity shortfalls by people who believe employees are company property and owe every ounce of time and energy to their employers.
Device hoarding has a similar pedigree, referring not to the practice of collecting and holding devices one doesn't need, but rather simply holding onto a device that still works instead of replacing it as soon as possible.
Breathless headlines are blaming this so-called hoarding (again, literally not hoarding) for weakness in the economy.
What quiet quitting and device hoarding have in common—besides being lies—is the worldview of people who believe in, worry about, and report on them.
The premise of quiet quitting and device hoarding alike is that you owe everything to your corporate masters. That giving less than everything to your job is "quitting," that spending less than every dime in your bank account is sabotaging the economy.

This post could be a bit of a downer, but sometimes life is just like that. I've encountered an inordinate number of people in the past week who were beyond nervous about dealing with me as a blind person. It just gets so old! What do they think I'm going to do? Spontaneously combust? I feel that I try so hard to put people at ease with me, but when all they can do is keep chanting about how nervous they are, I just want to suggest they get over themselves. I wish there were a cure, a more reasonable way to deal with this. When I was a kid and stuff like this happened, I thought that for sure by the time I was an adult, people would be better informed. Sadly, no.

As I'm adding unit conversions to my app, I'm strongly considering adding "baby elephant" as a unit of mass and "olympic swimming pool" as a unit of volume for, ahem, some countries.
You should also add a "football field" (a very interesting unit, as its definition is always what the writer wanted it to be, never what the reader thinks it is).
There's also the famous Boeing 737 wingspan, a unit as old and storied as Archimedes himself. The wingspans of other types of airplane may also be used in some cases, though not as often. Consulting an airplane engineer may be a good idea.
Last but not least, you have the famous ounce, a unit whose SI equivalent depends on *what it is measuring*. This is still better than the Pound, whose value varries daily in some contexts.
Oh, and don't forget about the unassuming "proof", a unit of alcohol strength derived from whether it burns when mixed with gunpowder (because no American unit system can ever be complete without a firearms reference).

I like it as I can easily copy text translated locally instead of using online services for the actual translation work.

I prefer installing a custom ROM and not having the Play Store over not having my FOSS apps. People already recommend having a second phone just to use banking apps anyway (to be left home, so to discourage kidnapping), I can use my old phone for that.
Better yet, drop Google altogether. Look into CalyxOS, GrapheneOS, Murena's /e/OS. Granted, custom ROMs are in their infancy, but they will never get out of it without popular support.

A new version of #SARA is available on GitHub. A lot has changed, mainly under the hood, but also in the interface. Among other things, a break (Ctrl+B) has been added to a track, which causes playback to stop after the track marked this way in automix. Speaking of automix, its behavior is now much more predictable. The mix window now allows monitoring of both the loop and the mix with the next track, both triggered by the Alt+V shortcut. A “Do Not Disturb” mode has been added to the NVDA add-on, enabled by default, which makes SARA speak very little, but as a side effect it also stops reading some interface elements, so for example it is best to switch between playlists using the F6 key. The Do Not Disturb mode can be turned off at any time with the Alt+NVDA+D shortcut. I use flex and smart tempo quite often without issue, and also gig with a Mac, have done since 2016. So far, never let me down. Hope it stays that way.
Die Barrierefreiheits-Branche findet sich gerade mal wieder ganz toll, weil sich eine Prüf-Organisation dazu entschieden hat, ihr Siegel nicht mehr an Websites zu vergeben, die automatisierte Techniken zur Herstellung von digitaler Zugänglichkeit von Drittfirmen, sogenannte „Overlays“, einbinden. In Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass solche Tools Unfug sind und in der Regel sogar neue Barrieren hinzufügen, ist das sehr gut und konsequent.
Bei der Organisation handelt es sich um „BIK“. Das ist ein Prüfverbund, bestehend aus mehreren einzelnen Firmen, der sich über viele Jahre einen „offiziellen“ Anstrich gegeben hat, weil man früher für einige Zeit vom Bund gefördert wurde. Sie sind aber nicht offiziell.
Nachdem die staatlichen Überwachungsstellen und viele Behindertenorganisationen wie der DBSV von solchen „Overlays“ abgeraten haben, meinen mehrere Leute jetzt, der Move von BIK würde diese Kritiken offiziell machen.
Es mag auf den ersten Blick nur so aussehen, als wären die Leute, die das behaupten, schlicht uninformiert. Aber ich behaupte ganz frech: Diese Positionierung von BIK als „offiziell staatlich“ ohne es zu sein, hat System — und hemmt den Wettbewerb zu digitaler Barrierefreiheit ganz massiv.
So oft wie mir untergekommen ist, dass Leute z.B. meine eigenen Dienstleistungen und mögliche Zertifizierungen als weniger wertig und weniger offiziell fundiert betrachten, bleibt mir gar nix anderes übrig.
Jede dieser Aussagen zementiert dieses falsche Image ein bisschen weiter — und schadet dabei nicht nur, aber ganz besonders vielen Tester*innen und Consultants mit Behinderung. Dass ein großer Teil der an BIK Beteiligten nichtbehindert ist und deren Prüfverfahren einige Sachen inkorrekt oder unzureichend testet, geschenkt.
Aber ich habe auch Kritik an der Positionierung gegen die sogenannten Overlays an sich, obwohl ich sie zuerst gelobt hab.
Ich habe noch keins dieser Overlays erlebt, das man nicht nach den Prüfkriterien der Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, die die Grundlage für den EU-Standard sind, ebenfalls automatisch „erwischt“ und mit „nicht bestanden“ bewerten könnte. Und damit natürlich auch die Einstufung eines Angebots als nicht gesetzeskonform erzwingt.
Es wirkt auf mich wie eine reine wirtschaftliche Maßnahme, nicht mit Anbietern solcher Overlays in Verbindung gebracht zu werden, statt wirklich dafür zu stehen.
Diese Overlays haben in vielen Fällen ein fragwürdiges Image und in der Regel auch keinen offiziellen Anstrich. Dazu existiert in diesem Umfeld gerade extrem viel Venture Capital (natürlich weil „KI“), was sie zur direkten Hauptkonkurrenz von BIK werden lässt, obwohl sie was völlig anderes anbieten. Jede Assoziierung damit und dem öffentlich nicht entgegenzutreten, schadet dem offiziellen Image von BIK — gerade weil sie das mit wirklich offiziellen Statements untermauern können.
Ich denke, das ist ganz einfach — aber das würde erfordern, dass BIK seine Geschäftspraktiken ändert und aufhört, Tests und Audits ohne eingehende Beratung zu verkaufen. Das bindet mehr Ressourcen, klar, damit lässt sich insgesamt weniger Geld verdienen als mit Zertifizierungen, auch klar, das wirkt dann nicht mehr wie eine offizielle oder offiziell genehmigte Dienstleistung, superklar.
Aber es würde den Quatsch effektiv abfangen und verhindern.
