Amsterdam airport is deploying reverse vending machines to collect used plastic bottles and cans. Their unique feature is that they are able to pay back deposit to any European payment card.

Unfortunately, they let some Dutch person write the English text making it totally obscure to foreigners: what the heck should "reverse pin transaction" mean and how I'm supposed to put in PIN if there's no pinpad? 🙄

Are you as enraged as I am by the new Canada-Alberta energy MOU?

One way you can take action is by supporting communities and grassroots movements that are fighting for climate and environmental justice, including land defenders facing unwanted oil and gas pipelines.

This pipeline will never happen, and we'll make f**cking sure of it.

I've been a big fan (and user) of @zachleat's glyphhanger for years.

But the last update was 4-5 years ago, so... it was time to port (some of it) to Rust:

This is extremely important.
I'll add a few things:

in reply to Marco Zehe

What quiet quitting and device hoarding have in common—besides being lies—is the worldview of people who believe in, worry about, and report on them.

The premise of quiet quitting and device hoarding alike is that you owe everything to your corporate masters. That giving less than everything to your job is "quitting," that spending less than every dime in your bank account is sabotaging the economy.

D-Day. As in d day I officially cancelled all paid subscriptions to authors I like and follow BUT sadly publish only on Substack.

THIS IS THE PART WHERE I SHARE THE IMPORTANT TO KNOW STUFF. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

CAN’T DO THIS
I also attempted to make sure my account listing my original email to be a subscriber in Substack was removed or changed to a different one that’s an alias email account. CAN’T DO THIS in Substack.

After I cancel each subscription I had paid for I tried to remove my credit card. CAN’T DO THIS in Substack.

Tried to delete any posts I had made in a lame personal Substack. CAN’T DO THIS in Substack. Tried to delete a few photos I shared. CAN’T DO THIS in Substack.

Um. How interesting these discoveries are. Even if I completely delete my account, Substack retains my email, my posts, my comments on any article published on Substack and my photos. I wonder why this would be. #Substack #SubstackNazis

Okay, I'm definitely biased, but I think joinloops.org sets a new bar for fediverse project websites.

Sites like Mastodon, Pixelfed, and Bonfire are beautiful, but I wanted to go further, making it resonate with people by focusing on what matters most to them.

TikTok is hard to crack. Few are attempting this because of how established they are.

When you remove the VC funding and toxicity, you're left with the platform every TikToker wanted.

So we build 🚀

This post could be a bit of a downer, but sometimes life is just like that. I've encountered an inordinate number of people in the past week who were beyond nervous about dealing with me as a blind person. It just gets so old! What do they think I'm going to do? Spontaneously combust? I feel that I try so hard to put people at ease with me, but when all they can do is keep chanting about how nervous they are, I just want to suggest they get over themselves. I wish there were a cure, a more reasonable way to deal with this. When I was a kid and stuff like this happened, I thought that for sure by the time I was an adult, people would be better informed. Sadly, no.

Tested: Windows 11’s ‘faster’ File Explorer (preloaded) is still slower than Windows 10, and uses additional RAM.
Microsoft is testing a “fix” to Windows 11’s File Explorer, which is supposed to improve its launch performance by preloading it in the background.
The move came after years of user complaints about the slow File Explorer, especially after coming from the now-retired Windows 10 File Explorer, which was snappier every time you launch it. But Microsoft’s solution to preload the File Explorer instead of fixing the underlying code is being scoffed at by users online.

You should also add a "football field" (a very interesting unit, as its definition is always what the writer wanted it to be, never what the reader thinks it is).

There's also the famous Boeing 737 wingspan, a unit as old and storied as Archimedes himself. The wingspans of other types of airplane may also be used in some cases, though not as often. Consulting an airplane engineer may be a good idea.

Last but not least, you have the famous ounce, a unit whose SI equivalent depends on *what it is measuring*. This is still better than the Pound, whose value varries daily in some contexts.

Oh, and don't forget about the unassuming "proof", a unit of alcohol strength derived from whether it burns when mixed with gunpowder (because no American unit system can ever be complete without a firearms reference).

A new version of #SARA is available on GitHub. A lot has changed, mainly under the hood, but also in the interface. Among other things, a break (Ctrl+B) has been added to a track, which causes playback to stop after the track marked this way in automix. Speaking of automix, its behavior is now much more predictable. The mix window now allows monitoring of both the loop and the mix with the next track, both triggered by the Alt+V shortcut. A “Do Not Disturb” mode has been added to the NVDA add-on, enabled by default, which makes SARA speak very little, but as a side effect it also stops reading some interface elements, so for example it is best to switch between playlists using the F6 key. The Do Not Disturb mode can be turned off at any time with the Alt+NVDA+D shortcut. Attached to this post you will find a sample of how SARA mixes in practice, and you can test it here: gitrls.com/michaldziwisz/sara/

This is why Macs have become horrible for recording and performing music.

It isn't a solution at all. It just resets the audio. It will fail again and again. Absolute crap that I doubt would have gotten past QA when I was there. It is garbage.

Aaaaber…

in reply to Casey

in reply to Casey

Also was tun?
