cursing, bikes, road maintenance math

"The fourth power law (also known as the fourth power rule) states that the greater the axle load of a vehicle, the greater the stress on a road caused by the motor vehicle."

"The ratio of the car to bicycle is 160,000 to 1.

This means that after 160,000 crossings, the bicycle causes as much damage [to the road] as the car does when driving on the road only once." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_p…

Are you using Mastodon through a computer?

Do you wish there was a multi-column TweetDeck-style interface?

There is! It's called the "advanced web interface" and you can activate it any time you want. It lets you add many specialised columns, subscribe to hashtags and all kinds of stuff suited to large wide displays.

Log into the website, go to Preferences > Enable Advanced Web Interface, tick the box and click "Save Changes".

(To restore the default single column interface, do the same thing but untick the box instead.)

This used to be the default interface on Mastodon, and very old articles about the platform will have screenshots of the multicolumn interface.

@lutindiscret yes, but you need to keep a few things in mind for a perfect experience:
1. set it up on one device then export a backup and import it on the other device
2. double check the setting "Copy to self / BCC self" is active

we're already working on making this process simpler, though it will still take a while to be ready.

Omg, I am so oldschool.
Up untill now, when I broke the boot I always flashed an #Arch image to pendrive, booted from it mounted proper partitions and fixed the mess.
From now on I am using the netboot ipxe.efi.

I've reported from my migration to my new home here at floss.social that there were issues with bookmark import. Now I can happily report the issue was solved after just 2 weeks. Thanks to the Mastodon team!

in reply to Michael Downey 🧢

@downey Who knows. I just thought if I reported there's a problem I should also mention when it was addressed. I do not plan another migration in the near future, so for now the download suffices for me (for which I'm using mastodon-backup now, and get it packaged for DEB/RPM so others can use it easily, too – testers welcome, packages seem stable now: github.com/kensanata/mastodon-…) @hugo
in reply to Michael Downey 🧢

@downey Yes indeed. I even integrated it with my Mastodon article (in the section on backup & migration). Contributed a few scripts (see the `contrib/` sub-dir and take the still open PRs into account for that as well). Hope to get an easy set-and-forget guide for it soon, once packages are confirmed to work fine and my other PRs are merged.

Oh, and still hope @kensanata finds time to introduce an option creating an "export archive" of the archived content, opening it for more viewers…

in reply to Michael Downey 🧢

@downey I am not certain but you can check the Release Candidate changelog for v4.0 here github.com/mastodon/mastodon/b…

I don't see that PR that but it could be included later.

Can you believe it? It is beginning of November and #BlackFriday marketing has already started.

Other people picked up the project, but in the end there's just so much you can do with a DICT client; people are always surprised once they find out how hard, complicated, and expensive it is to actually have a dictionary, so punting to other projects is the simplest solution

For a while, I hoped people would pick up the code, drop the awful DICT client implementation I wrote, and replace it with a Wiktionary view. Alas, it wasn't meant to be

@aral Hmmm, well, maybe based a little more criteria like stability, uptodate version, etc...

Basically I could imagine a general distribution based on:
- legislation (where is the server located)?
- is it stable?
- runs reasonable recent version?
- is registration open and what type of registration (invite only, free, registration through 3rd party like LDAP/SAML)?
- paid or free?

This should be best determined automatically before offering the user a server.

We're seeing a huge influx in new users of our app! Thank you everyone for chosing to try out #Tusky!

If you can afford to, it would go a long way for our project if you'd donate the equivalent of $1/month (but at a yearly base so $12/year, because it lowers fees!)

@ericbuijs We have to be very careful about setting privacy expectations: there is no #privacy in the #ActivityPub protocol/#mastodon/the #fediverse.

@omnipotens @Linux_in_a_Bit @architect Of course it is possible because, again, it is unencrypted. And unless you run your instance on physical hardware in your bedroom, folks in the data center and at your hosting provider are among the ones who could have access to them. Given that the privacy (and thus safety) of the people on your instance is concerned, I would expect a much less cavalier attitude towards this from a server admin than “no one cares lol.”
in reply to Aral Balkan

@Linux_in_a_Bit @architect

Fair enough the comment was mostly in jest as the point was it would be a pain in the rear just to read someone's DMs.

As for security it is taken pretty seriously from physical access to software. Including using clevis and tang with tpm on the host.

If someone were to break into the data center and take the server even they would not have access to the data.

Migration connections

So I just imported a bunch of people from Twitter using fedifinder.glitch.me - good tool, thanks @Luca

Not sure if it makes a follow request for those who require it? (Apologies to those who request some interaction here before a follow request.)

We should not be optimising Mastodon so it can handle more people per server. We should be optimising Mastodon so it incentivises more serves with fewer people.

(And if you take that line of thinking to its logical conclusion, you arrive at the idea behind the Small Web: ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-s…)
