Alright, I've been busy working on scaling up my ability to deploy Mastodon. If you need help setting up Mastodon and want to support a team of Black developers checkout our project 👇🏿

If you maintain an open source project, even as a solo developer, I highly recommend writing descriptive commit messages. These messages help others understand what changes you're making and why you're making them, and will help you in the future if you return to a codebase after a long time.

I find myself not wanting to contribute to projects that don't have good commit messages, as it's harder for me to get a grasp on the codebase.

If you don't know how to write a good commit message, this guide is a good start: wiki.gnome.org/Git/CommitMessa…

@andyholmes I usually don't squash commits if they aren't just fixes for previous commits. So if I have the following commits:

  • Change set A
  • Tweaks to change set A
  • Fix for crash in set A
  • Change set B

I'd only keep:

  • Change set A
  • Change set B

at the end (as a very simplified example)

The experimental Rust PR to add a more expressive "interop" ABI on top of the C ABI is IMHO the most exciting new effort that happened in Rust in the last few years.

Thanks to @josh and others for starting this very important work 🥳

Also @Mara's reply seems to indicate that some serious thought is now also put into other related areas, especially for handling Rust dynamic libraries.

Very exciting stuff for making Rust a better choice in various areas where exactly these topics were slowing down or hindering adoption.

Glad to see that Germany is hopping on the train of #decentralised communication based on #opensource software like @matrix and #element.

As many people loving open source softwares, we deeply support #framasoft for all they are doing in the world of open source projects.
We need them but they also need our support. You can help them with a donation, they need it to keep their outstanding work. Thank you.

For anyone who doesn't know, @Framasoft support and fund a whole wide range of decentralized, #FOSS, #privacy respecting tools such as #Peertube ( @peertube ), #Mobilizon (think Facebook Groups for the #Fediverse, @mobilizon ) and more!

They do it all on super low funding, so go throw a few or your local currency at them to help grow the #fedi!

So. thought I'd pen some thoughts here... no, not about birdsite, but about a cool youtube channel I discovered a couple of years ago, The Radio Vault. Its a youtube channel dedicated to #preservation of mostly New Zealand and Australian radio. They recently announced that they've been hard at work, digitizing over 750 #VHS #tapes, and over 1500 #cassettes. Wow! I can't even begin to imagine what 1500 cassettes would look like! I had about 100 when I was younger, but 1500? *head explodes*. Here's the link. youtube.com/channel/UClKbJxBkh… #Australia #NZ #Radio

One of my favourite podcasts, Talk Description to Me, has returned from their hiatus for a Christmas special | ‘This year, to celebrate the season, we'd like to make this small Christmas offering: a reading of How The Grinch Stole Christmas by the one-and-only Dr. Seuss. But Christine is Christine, JJ is JJ, and this is Talk Description to Me, so in our reading of the classic Christmas tale, a few descriptions of the picture book illustrations have been woven into the text in playful Seussian rhyme!’

I'm experimenting with running my whole #swaywm desktop from a user #podman #container on top of e.g. #Fedora IoT. Works surprisingly well already.

github.com/martinpitt/swaypod

The only dealbreaker is that the container does not receive kernel uevents, i.e. it does not see any kind of hw change. It already uses --network=host and bind-mounts /dev.This is also broken in standard #toolbx. Does anybody know a trick to get that?

I have a patreon - patreon.com/posts/working-on-g…

This is mostly for the work I do on enabling features and maintaining a full tool suite (daemons + GUI + CLI) on Linux. If you have an ASUS ROG or TUF (or Strix) laptop and want to or do run Linux, almost all of your current feature experience is from the work I do. Dozens of Linux kernel patches, and 20k+ lines of code (not including the half dozen huge refactors) in the tool suite.

Kamoinge is a group of black Photographers who formed in 1963.
Their mission statement: "Honour, document, preserve, & represent the history & culture of the African Diaspora with integrity & respect for humanity through the lens of Black Photographers"
This wonderful work is important to counterbalance the whitewashing of #History by mainly white, middle-class historians/reporters throughout time.

mmm discord scams are evolving. friend downloaded a token stealer and in 30 seconds the script grabbed his token, changed his email in discord, read his gmail to get the verification code for the email change and then started autobanning anyone who typed anything in the server, in case they would try to warn other users.

please be careful online. the scam was the typical "please try out my game" deal but it was tailored towards the account that messaged my friend; they knew that account belonged to an artist and used it to make the message more personable.

The accessibility for the blind advent calendar: day 18 - Czech Republic
Back to the Czech Republic we go, where remote assistance of blind and partially sighted people was in operation years before AIRA was founded.
The navigational center of the Czech Union of the Blind assists their customers in many ways:
- by delivering help through the user's smartphone's camera via Skype;
- by looking up information on public transport routes and general information on places of interest;
- best of all: by researching routes that the user would like to take bearing in mind everything that is of importance when travelling independently with a white cane or/and a guide dog, including possible hazards or characteristic waypoints and landmarks.
It comes as no surprise that the service is available throughout the entire country. Pricewise, it works in two models: it is possible to buy packages of single uses of the service starting at less than six dollars for ten single uses; or a periodic subscribtion starting at around 13 dollars for three months.

Do not interpret this as a funny accidental self-own. Fascists KNOW they are full of shit and it doesn't *matter* to them (or, sadly, their followers) if the truth keeps changing
We should not take this in the context of "haha what a hilarious hipocrisy" but rather further proof (as if any more was needed) that anything he says is just for show, and can be revoked at any time if it becomes convenient
