I think my biggest issue with Zig is that documentation is basically non-existent or sorely lacking. I'm so used to Rust where the std is immaculately documented, and where commonly used libraries follow its example.
The official Rust book walks you through everything you need to know to understand to write real programs in Rust and when to use the different tools the language provides. Zig doesn't have much in the way of that. There's Ziglings, but these bite-sized examples don't give you a good concept of what a full program looks like or the footguns you can run into.
The lack of documentation combined with tooling that is woefully uninformative means that if you hit a roadblock, you can be stuck on it for a long time.
@zeenix I'd be interested in seeing how they arrived at that conclusion - perhaps we have different things in mind when we talk about tooling.
IMO Rust is the gold standard of programming language tooling. I prefer using it not just because of the memory safety or the performance, but because of the tooling.
@zeenix Rust has great developer tooling but all kinds of build related problems if you leave the common path and want other people than yourself be able to build your software easily. Mostly cargo (but if you don't use cargo you're on your own anyway), but also various issues related to rustc. Not going to re-iterate all those, I wrote often enough about that and you're probably also aware of various issues just for GNOME, which targets exactly 1 platform 🙂
For Zig people claim* it's so much easier in that regard and that people even use the Zig toolchain to easily get a recent C toolchain.
* I say claim because I never tried it myself. The language doesn't have anything interesting to me that would convince me to spend some time on actually learning it.
@slomo @zeenix That's fair, and Zig Build is definitely pretty neat in that regard. I think the dependency management story still needs some work though.

Press NVDA+control+g to open general settings, tab to "Logging level"; down arrow to "Debug", Press OK, then NVDA+q to quit, down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled" & enter (to ensure it's not an add-on bug), when NVDA restarts, recreate the issue, then windows+e for File Explorer. Press alt+d & type: %temp% (note the percent signs either side). Look for nvda.log & nvda-old.log nvda.log is the log from the CURRENTLY RUNNING or most recent run, nvda-old from the time before.

With the growing movement to boycott US goods, more people are choosing European alternatives. Let’s take a look at the best European products you can use.
Yes, "Buy #European" is trending but it also sucks. A lot.
Hear me out: I understand and also feel the urge for tech #independence, particularly from the US, right now.
But just because something is European doesn't make it good or ethical.
@Tutanota People shouldn't trust you because you're "from Europe" or German or whatever. But because you have an #ethical business model, employ good people, care about your users, respect #humanrights and build free and #opensource software.
As long as we talk about tech independence or digital #sovereignty primarily in terms of geography and jurisdiction, we will lose as users and as people with rights:
1. Because this narrative can easily be co-opted by antidemocratic, nationalistic forces.
2. It takes away attention from what actually provides us with independence: software #freedom, #interoperability, a power shift away from #bigtech to small, decentralised, ethical tech.
3. It gives praise to entities that don't deserve it just because they are "European". Point in case: the certainly well-intentioned @goeuropean project, which recommends (among many very ethical companies) some really terrible "European alternatives", e.g.:

You said Mastodon is nonprofit and not under pressure from stakeholders. But they can get under pressure of governments pretty easily. Just look at Apple and the UK. Even if Apple wouldn´t be a profit company they still would get pressure. Nostr is a open-source decental protocol. The is no company and no ceo behind ist. So it can´t get any pressure.
