one thing that i'd love the WebAim screen reader survey to differentiate better is how results break down by OS (mainly to be able to have more segmented "on Mac, VoiceOver is effectively the only screen reader used" or similar). it might then also reframe some of the other statements/results, e.g. "71.6% of respondents use more than one desktop/laptop screen reader" ... I suspect those 71.6% are effectively Windows users? webaim.org/projects/screenread… #a11y #accessibility

Some #FediBlock entries:

aillust.fun: instance revolves around AI-generated lewd imagery, especially lolicon.

pso.li: unapologetic queermisia, inc. from admin account “admin”. Scroll through the local timeline for receipts.

yeshuafreedom.com: far-right conspiracy PeerTube instance with unapologetic bigotry.

  • Channel “yeshuamakesfree” contains anti-vax, young-earth, and flat-earth conspiracy videos as well as blatant transmisia.
  • Channel “johns_videos” has more of the same.
  • Both channels are linked on the landing page of the instance as the two primary channels of the instance.

naharia.net: racism.

  • Admin “megalomart” regularly posts racist bait (one, two, three, four) while having “Proud Black Woman” in their profile bio.

vigilante.tv: Another far-right conspiracy PeerTube

Many of you have suspended newsie.social, and other instances that its admin “Jeff” runs. He’s constantly spinning up more. Here are the ones I’ve found so far:

newsie.social
<a href="http://celebrity.social" rel="ugc">celebrity.social</a>
<a href="http://conchrepublic.social" rel="ugc">conchrepublic.social</a>
<a href="http://lawstodon.social" rel="ugc">lawstodon.social</a>
<a href="http://humanist.social" rel="ugc">humanist.social</a>
<a href="http://roadlife.social" rel="ugc">roadlife.social</a>
<a href="http://greatloop.social" rel="ugc">greatloop.social</a>
<a href="http://honeytree.social" rel="ugc">honeytree.social</a>
<a href="http://boating.social" rel="ugc">boating.social</a>

Some of these instances shut down and re-direct to Jeff’s other projects, but shut-down instances often come back later.

Fediverse-adjacent sites by the same admin:

bigrelay.social
<a href="http://verifiedjournalist.social" rel="ugc">verifiedjournalist.social</a>

(EDIT 2023-10-14: Jeff now runs journa.host as well)

This isn’t as severe as the other entries in this post; it’s just an FYI in case you only suspended a subset. If you suspended newsie.social, you might want to consider these. If you didn’t find newise.social suspend-worthy, you can ignore this.

Ah! Turns out that some bigger stations *do* have their platform staircases mapped, using OSM's "level=n" schema. So that's a start!

The renderers often hide everything that's not level=0, but you can view the data using tools like this one:

Centuries old European-centric American history debunked by archaeology and advanced genomics

The Pueblo, Pawnee, Comanche and Lakota traditional owners gain confirmation of what they have always being saying, that they'd been using horses centuries earlier than what the Western narrative have claimed.

This is incredibly exciting. Not just this case, but how there’s the potential for history to be rewritten in many other periods of history, provided science is given the opportunity to explore

OSARA accessibility plug-in for Reaper can now automatically check for updates.
OSARA will check for an update when REAPER starts if it hasn't checked within the last 24 hours.
You can also manually check for updates using the action: OSARA: Check for update.
If an update is available, the dialog will show the commit log since you last updated.
OSARA can't download and install the update, so it provides a button to go directly to the download page.

People are discussing the water impact of AI, a topic that @jfleck and I discussed last year when he gave me a tour of the Albuquerque water system.

John encouraged me to compare AI to other water users. Karen Hao cites 50 million gallons a year from Microsoft's Phoenix datacenter. Golf courses in Phoenix use 80 million gallons per *day*.

When managing water, AI is important but there are other users that could make more of a difference.

Today I learnt that there is a practice of writing Chinese with the Arabic script, developed by Muslim minorities in China. It's called 小儿经 Xiao'erjing. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiao%2…

There's also a body of Chinese Islamic theological texts which meld Confucian and Islamic thought, called the Han Kitab. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_Ki…

I don't know why I'm surprised. China has had Muslim ethnic minorities almost since the dawn of Islam. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hui_pe…

I got tired of accidentally hitting the mute key on my laptop or microphone and not being able to tell without going into mmsys.cpl and checking listen to this device, so I wrote a tiny program that sits in the background and reports your default input device's muted state with a global hotkey (control+alt+shift+m).
Source code: github.com/TheQuinbox/micstate
Binaries: github.com/TheQuinbox/micstate…

Update: it can now even detect microphones muted at the hardware level, but not detected as muted by Windows.

Sorry for the very late reply (and the account change), but I still wanted to say this: Personally, I'd prefer a system where I could choose the accent colour. Either, with a few predefined options, or maybe with a colour selector (however, maybe after selecting a colour, the contrast regarding the day/night theme should be calculated, to make sure it's accessible for everyone [and also readable]).

LiveRamp, formerly known as Acxiom, sits at the core of much of today's opaque personal data sharing for marketing purposes and maintains comprehensive identity records about everyone in many countries, including in Europe and the UK.

We examined LiveRamp's identity surveillance system, which facilitates digital tracking and profiling across many companies.

New 60-page report published today:

Over the next little while, I’m reviewing all three recorders in Zoom’s Essential Series, which are largely accessible. I’m starting with the flagship product, the H6Essential. I’ve published it in The Blind Podmaker feed as episode 38. Since the review is lengthy, it’s indexed by chapter so you can skip between sections. The audio can also be found here.
