simple

ok, many people could *maybe* be convinced by this argument. But what is almost always lacking on this subject are the funding criteria. Most FOSS projects are just playgrounds for inexperienced developers. And even the established projects lack many of the components of a proper organizational structure, with professional UX designers, customer service, lawyers, professional managers etc. Not all FOSS projects deserve funding.

The xz fiasco has shown how a dependence on unpaid volunteers can cause major problems. Trillion dollar corporations like Microsoft expect free and urgent support from ffmpeg volunteers. They posted on a bug tracker full of volunteers that their issue is "high priority". After politely requesting a support contract from Microsoft for long term maintenance, they offered a one-time payment of a few thousand dollars instead. I know it's hard to share adult content, but Masto makes it easier: I can use content notes to ensure neither you (or your followers) are shown porn without consent.

But when I post something especially filthy (like last week's guest blog, linked later in thread), I get private messages from people saying 'OH THIS IS AMAZING' but fewer shares, because people are (understandably) shyer as things get hotter. Unfortunately, this often means I just can't justify commissioning more like that.

I actually ran some analysis on this years ago, because I am a huge nerd. The filthier the blog post, the more clicks it'll get, but the fewer shares:

I can't track link clicks from Masto because it has privacy as more of a thing, so I'm even more reliant on your boosts to show me what you like.

Tl:dr - share what you love, and I'll pay writers and voice artists to make more of it!

I've now seen "dihydrogen monoxide" used to make fun of both political extremes in the US. When I was in high school in the late 90s, attending a fundamentalist Christian school (that's not who I am anymore), someone made fun of environmentalists by writing a mock petition to ban the harmful substance "dihydrogen monoxide". After all, among other things, it's a key component of acid rain.

On March 29th, Andres Freund dropped a bombshell on the oss-security mailing list: recent XZ Utils source code tarball releases made by Jia Tan were released with a backdoor. Thankfully, for multiple reasons, Alpine was not impacted by this backdoor, despite the recent source code tarball releases being published in Alpine edge.

No osobne si nemyslím, že včera vedel čo robil, keď povedal, že si ide lustrovať novinárov. Všetci smeráci a hlasáci sa od toho dištancovali, čo len svedčí o tom, že Erik absolútne nevie čo robí, lebo sa správa ako 5 ročné decko na pieskovisku. A keď sa od neho odvracajú aj jeho vlastný, tak to tiež o niečom svedčí. Žiaľ, ešte sa má čo učiť aj svojich kolegov.
