And the system where they enter those records requires a vendor contact email address. And someone, lacking a better email address in their rush to fill out the form, found your email address and used it, not understanding the implications.

as written below, E2E encryption works in a room with the two participants, yet not in a 1:1 chat. Selecting "room" resolves the issue. Yet that's not a thing to make a first user understand or making her/him trying per se.
