📣 Attention all custom ROM users and advocates for digital rights! 📣

Google's Play Integrity is limiting access to certain functionalities and applications for those using custom operating systems. This is a direct attack on the open-source community and a step towards further consolidating Google's monopoly in the mobile ecosystem.

The European Commission is aware of the situation, but has deemed it a low priority: europarl.europa.eu/doceo/docum…

It's time for us to take action and show Google and the EU how much we care about this issue! 💥

1/N Starting to write an outline of article about how open source maintainers (especially of data science and scientific computing libraries) can reduce carbon emissions, and realized I might get to talk about my favorite ACM Computing Survey paper, "Systems Approaches to Tackling Configuration Errors: A Survey" (tianyin.github.io/pub/csur.pdf) and related research by Tianyin Xu and collaborators.

This is just one point out of many, but it's maybe the most surprising—

I have other 5 songs in the can, and one of those is a killer one, I truly think it might be a very solid single.
Therefore, I'll record all other tracks in order to get better at mixing and mastering, hoping to improve the output quality before releasing that banger!

Had to explain to another user why asking a volunteer project to fix an issue is inappropriate.

And I get that's it's a really subtle point here between saying "I also have this problem" (fine) and "Please fix this issue" (not ok)

i.e. You can only ask people you have a relationship with to do work for you. You can NOT ask strangers to labour for you for free, even if you think it's important, or appropriate.

Reminded of how Canada 🇨🇦 was called a “failed state” on social media by people in the USA 🇺🇸 for - checking notes - an increase in the capital gains tax for the wealthy
in reply to Andy McKay

and how they gaslit everyone about how much increase that was....

(they are still taxed lower than employment income. So basically lazy income is rewarded)

I cannot describe my disbelief and annoyance that this Airbnb in Paris has no corkscrew.

THREAD: By now most of you have heard the news of the ICC's belated issuing of an arrest warrant for Netanyahu. But what are the consequences for countries who refuse to arrest the Israeli Prime Minister? Africans are best placed to provide answers for this hilariously😁

Short answer: nothing.

in reply to Zecharias Zelalem

It could be with the accusations of anti African bias in mind, that the ICC appointed Fatou Bensouda, a Gambian national, as lead prosecutor for the body. She stayed in the position from 2012-2021.
in reply to Zecharias Zelalem

But this was merely a symbolic measure.

Among the African masses...there is the perception (accurate to be frank) that the body lacks objectivity and is politically aligned.

African observers of global political affairs are all aware of how the ICC completely sidestepped Iraq and Afghanistan. The swiftness of arrest warrants for Putin, compared to the dillydallying on warrants for Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant...well it's hardly even subtle is it?

To by extra drahý nebylo. Ale to jen za předpokladu, že se uživatelům zobrazujou data, který jejich PDS posbírá od ostatních relays! Jo a zbytek sítě by tuhle komunikaci logicky neviděl.

Good news for Public Radio fans.
The latest update to the NPR app has made it accessible and usable. The app used to be almost impossible to navigate, and both TalkBack and Jieshuo would freeze while attempting to move around its news articles or program segments. However, the latest release has effectively resolved the glitch.

Buenas!

Bits and pieces (and even larger chunks) of the Internet ancestor's ARPANET are scattered all through today's Internet. Our email formats are effectively identical, and that's just one example among MANY. In fact, the standard default reverse lookup address for domains in the DNS still features the suffix "arpa" in every single one. Dig it. No pun intended.

Honest question: Why do YOU think people want Mastodon's user base to get bigger? You may even be one of those people, and if so, why do YOU want Mastodon's user base to grow?

Full disclosure: I don't really want or care for Mastodon to get bigger. But I also get why some people may want larger audiences for their art, or their observations about a topic, or any number of reasons.

I'm simply curious why larger social network platform size is viewed so broadly as being good or desirable.

in reply to Matthew Merkovich

Because the world is an interesting place and it is often good to leave room for surprise. I don't know what I'm missing if there are people and views I can't come across because they're not here to state them.

At the same time, realistically, my TL is barely possible for me to catch up with; so it wouldn't make a very real and immediate difference to me.

@Friendica Support
I have two identical configured channels with 2 accounts on different nodes. They don't look the same. On my node f.e. i can see shared posts, on the old node only new posts and comments are shown. The base circle for both channels is "New - activity".
What additional options are there to define channels? What am i missing?
in reply to ⚝ Mirko ⚝

@m1rk0 If I understood your request correctly, you need to check in social networks.

It really is interesting how often the things that annoy us so much coming from someone else are things we also do. Example: I absolutely hate riding with someone who yells at other drivers on the road. Intellectual honesty forces me to admit that if I had the ability to drive, I'd probably be exactly the same way. Why do we do that? They can't hear you. If they could, they still wouldn't care. All it does is give your passenger anxiety. But yeah, I'd be doing the same thing.

So questions for #Blind #Edgucaters, #teachers, #school staff and anyone in the #education field as a whole.

I am a university student who originally planned to double major in computer science and elementary education, but I’ve recently faced some concerns that I’d like to address.

I’ve been told that pursuing a teaching certification might not be advisable because schools may be reluctant to hire a teacher with low vision, who is mostly blind, to manage a classroom of thirty or more students. This has been quite upsetting.

My dream was to work with elementary students, focusing on #STEM subjects and teaching technology-related topics like understanding tech, its role in the world, and the basics of programming. Now, I find myself uncertain about what path to take.

Working with kids, especially those in elementary school, is my biggest passion, even more than tech or music. It’s something that would truly fulfill me. Since I can’t have kids myself, guiding and teaching young learners is the next best thing. It’s a career I’m committed to and want to excel in.

Being advised not to pursue a teaching certification and to focus solely on computer science has been quite discouraging. I’ve been told to study elementary education as a secondary focus and combine it with my computer science studies. This might involve developing educational systems for kids, but it would likely mean limited direct interaction, possibly just during product testing, which isn’t enough for me.

So, I have a few questions:

1. Are there any educators with #Blindness or #LowVision challenges working with elementary students? If so, in what capacity do you work with them?
2. How has your disability affected your effectiveness in the field?
3. What challenges did you face in getting certified and qualified, and how did you overcome them?
4. What obstacles have you encountered in the classroom and with colleagues, and how have you addressed them?

If these questions don’t apply, what advice can you offer me in pursuing my goal of working with children? While tech is a focus, I’m open to being flexible, as long as it’s an area I’m confident in.

Finally, if teaching isn’t possible for me, what other career paths would you suggest that align with my goals?

I’d really appreciate any support
and engagement in this discussion.

Boosts welcomed and appreciated.
