Anyone who is blind, or who has worked with the blind, knows how expensive our technology can be. This couldn't be more true with relation to braille displays. Even the cheapest costs at least $799, and it's already behind the newest in that line, at $899. This is the Orbit Reader 20 and 20+. Now, a student in India wants to change that by creating a display that is truly affordable (under $50)! Please pass this on, so that we can give him greater recognition within the blind community. Even if it costs a bit more than he initially suspected it would, there is no excuse for the $2,000 to $5,000 average price of such technology when cheaper alternatives can be designed! He is determined to bring this to market, so let's help him do it and show our appreciation for his hard work on this life-changing project!
The big drawback to refreshable braille devices has always been their cost. The loose rule of estimation applied to these products has translated into something like $100 to $150 per braille cell.
They only work on OSHW, but the people working on the hardware get paid for the designs, and, then use localised manufacturing for the distribution. :D
It gets the overall energy-costs down per end-user, but still means that the engineers involved can get paid a fair rate. :D

The "McCloud" in the contra chrome-comic is Ben Goodger, who actually DID work on Chrome until 2024.
Great info. I've been using both FireFox and Brave browser for a while now. I still use Gmail & Youtube, unfortunately. But I browse using the private functions and a VPN for other stuff as much as possible.
- when I need to use a Chromium-based browser, I use Vivaldi. Norwegian-based and itβs recently partnered with Proton (so, from Switzerland) to incorporate their VPN directly into the browser. European sensibilities when it comes to security and privacy - so much higher than US-based Google, DuckDuckGo, Edge et al.
- and as a sidebar, I use Startpage (also based in Europe) as my search engine - for pretty much the same reasons as I avoid the US commercial browsers.
@icing my reading of that ticket is that they do use libcurl-gnutls however OpenLDAP now links against OpenSSL (with the gnutls backend slated for removal) and so libcurl-gnutls ends up linked against OpenSSL
@icing if I understood that correctly, their problem seems to be coming from OpenLDAP, which links against OpenSSL. So libcurl-gnutls doesn't help as long as it links OpenLDAP.

The Apache license says that:

So if libcurl is dynamically linked to OpenSSL, the Apache License conditions doesn't apply, and thus don't propagate to git.
However, on the GPL v2 side it can depend on how you'd interpret section 3:

I suppose that it then depends on whether libcurl and OpenSSL are considered "a major component of the operating system". If not, nobody (not even git themselves) can redistribute git in binary form. That would also apply to a myriad of other projects aswell (e.g: the Gnome DE uses the Apache 2.0-licensed libcups).
Edit: heck, even the Linux Kernel uses OpenSSL. That would suppose that nobody could redistribute it in binary form? git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kβ¦
just replied to it with my findings, I couldn't find a single distro that's not linking git with OpenSSL, either directly or indirectly (through libcurl-openssl).
Even GuixOS which doesn't build libcurl with LDAP support ends up linking to libssl on git-imap-send.
now there's a proposal to remove libcurl from the git build as a remedy, which of course would be quite a significant blow to everyone who clones https repositories...

I think it's a real stretch to say OpenSSL 'accompanies' the executable here and I can't help but wonder if Brian is stirring the pot deliberately. When I install things via apt, at the very least, I'm fetching individual distributions of program binaries. Stop shipping `git` in any default install images (are there any?) and this shouldn't even be a consideration.

@robini71 Their online shop only lists the software with an SMA, so I'd have to do some digging to see what an SMA alone would cost. The problem is that I haven't been keeping up with SMA pricing since I use the subscription or home annual version so if the price of an SMA did increase I wouldn't realize it.
@robini71 at this point jaws is a scam. NVDA is good and I have switched from jaws to NVDA. I still have the jaws programming but only use it for special purposes
@robini71 guess right. it all just feels like a big sham to me. back then it might've been good ,maybe even the most dominent screen reader. but now it feels like a complete waist. even narrator is doing a better job in some cases
@adisonverlice Everyone is entitled to their opinions but in some corporate environments where specialized scripting is needed Jaws For Windows can still be of benefit and as I said I for one have never gotten this tendency of trashing one in order to bolster another. I'm content to let each coexist quite nicely and let each decide that which works best for themselves in any given moment, situation and environment.
@adisonverlice Yes one example of many but one has to have the foundation of Jaws for scripts to be placed into in the first place. NVDA being more oriented to add-ons doesn't handle such in quite the same fashion. So I'm not entirely sure where you're going with that.

But that's the thing I always try to understand things even if they don't directly impact me personally because they may be quite important too others and their given situations and workflows. And because NVDA is more open source in orientation some corporate environs won't even let it run. That's why I say there's still a place for both and even more and one needn't supplant the other.
@robini71 @adisonverlice Adison, with respect, JAWS is not, as you say, a scam. If NVDA meets your needs, that's absolutely fine. In truth, NVDA has evolved to be a really great screen reader. If JAWS was an exact clone of NVDA or even worse, I might also be critical of its price tag. However, the fact is that you do get a lot of features and capabilities in JAWS which are not present in NVDA and your question about Hartgen Consultancy only proves that, since JAWS has a framework for scripting that allows programs like Leasey, the Zoom Pro scripts, the Muze and the Station Playlist Studio scripts, along with others, to even exist. To be fair, NVDA does allow third party add-ons and it also has some features that JAWS does not. I've used NVDA prior to its official public release and I've used every version of JAWS since 1.0 and I keep up with the features of both screen readers. JAWS may not be something that you personally need but calling it a scam is just inaccurate and unjustified.
I see. i'm not saying it's a scam as if it were a fact, and my apologies if it came out that way. jaws was good when I first used it, it did what I needed it to do back then. but back then I thought it was the only screen reader I needed. that is, untill I got out and noticed more options. so these days jaws just, feels, like a scam to me. and i'm not saying that as fact, that is opinion based on my part. I know many people in my friend group who use it and I respect that. but for me, it just feels like a scam. the reason is the price tag. I would maybe revert this opinion if the SMAs didn't exist. I like to, oen, my screen reader. own, as in, it's either pay once, or pay nothing, and own it. FS just does not meet that requirement. again, if FS deleted the SMAs my criticalness of them would not be so bad, and I might consider using them again. but untill then, it feels like a complete sham to me and (for now) i've lost all hope for it...
@robini71 @adisonverlice Back when JAWS was HenterJoyce, if something didn't work in a work setting, they would send out a scripter to see if there was something that they might be able to tackle. This is easily done when you're small. Nowadays, you get what you get; unless you have connections. Case in point, the broken cut and paste in Chromium browsers and speech history. I haven't heard anything from FS, although a few Beta testers say that FS is aware. That's fine, but be more apparent about it. Just say, we know it's an issue and we'll fix it. That's what I like about NV access. They'll tell you something is broken and when to expect a fix. FS? Crickits!
@mcourcel Oh wow I didn't realize it was broken in speech history too wow. Is it still working in version 2024? It's why I keep 2 versions on my system. This was very needful when the create envelopes dialogue in Word365 was broken in 2025 and Word would immediately crash when you tried to create an envelope. I wonder if they fixed that yet.
@robini71 No, it's also broken in 2024, so it's most likely a Chromium issue, but it would be nice to hear from FS about it. And also explain why it isn't working in speech history. You know, it's the little things.
@mcourcel I've gotten a response on occasion though if you asked me what it was about I'd not recall. But again at least they couldn't say they didn't know. But hey don't go by me the world hath made me tired and I know less and less with each passing day.

@gocu54 @jstark @robini71 @mcourcel I think people were confused because you suddenly put an example of something that's not even a screen reader in a topic about screen readers, I for one use JAWS as my daily driver because Leasy is probably the best set of scripts out there, so the extra like $10 for the license doesn't bother me for the year. I have NVDA, but I use it maybe 5% of the time comparatively to how much I use JAWS, and the thing is, its only getting better and more refined. Bryan is awesome and I honestly have found way more utility in JAWS that NVDA just can't compare or compete with.

@robini71 @adisonverlice I agree with you David. Jaws is coming up with a feature that will read pictures and words you wouldn't otherwise be able to read automatically. NVDA doesn't have that.
@robini71 @adisonverlice Every so often, I try and give NVDA a go, but I always end up going back to Jaws mainly because it has a more robust laptop keyboard command layout structure for navigation. As much as I try, I just find NVDAβs lack of navigational keys with just the alphanumeric part of the keyboard too limiting. Also, I am in Outlook more or less all day for my business and find jaws support way more developed than MDA as of right now. Thatβs even with the outlook at on for NVDA. This is with the classic version of Outlook. I donβt think NVDA is somehow a lesser product or anything either.I know a lot of developers and folks with way more technological background and knowledge then I Use it as their main screen reader. Just different strokes for different folksβ¦
o kand I get that. I have alternatives to jaws though, so i'm not paying for jaws just to read some picks...in all respect to FS, I think I would use more of their software if the pricing again didn't feel (this my opinion) like a total sham. it's the pricing. for example, SMAs, with those, it feels like jaws is a total sham. I respect you if you use jaws, I was a former jaws user myself. but i've navigated away from jaws and i'm happy with it. so that is what I will stick to. now if FS removes those pointless perpetual SMA agreements, I will be happy to go back to jaws. I will be happy to explore it. but untill then, NVDA is my daily driver
@robini71 @adisonverlice I would like to also add that calling it a scam is also emplying that all of us who are using JAWS are being scammed, that is further from the truth. There have been times where JAWS has gotten me out of situations that no other screen reader could get me out of. I use both NVDA and JAWS and sometimes narrator at times, but JAWS was what I grew up on. From JAWS 3.7 to 2025, I have used it. I may not agree withh it's prices, but I sertainly do not feel scammed, and seeing as I did identity theft reports for a year for the FTC, well...
@robini71 @Lino_JR I don't think the cost increase for the JAWS subscription will be significant enough to drive people to NVDA, considering that it's only an extra $9.00 a year.
@Lino_JR Maybe but it isn't for everyone. Each has their uses. I'll still choose to pay for Jaws For Windows at least for now; along with keeping current with NVDA. The more tools in my toolkit the happier I am.
@robini71 @Lino_JR I think what aggravates me the most about these increases is that the price of OpenBook is increasing by $100.00. This, to me, is a bit unjust, considering that OpenBook hasn't received an update since 2018 and Vispero has stated that they've pretty much ceased development on this software.
@robini71 @Lino_JR When FS increased their prices a few years ago, they did issue a press release about it. They have not done so for this round of increases.
@tinygirl @robini71 @Lino_JR OpenBook was an amazing program for its time. The landscape was very different in the '90s as we didn't have Bookshare, Kindle or Apple Books. If there were some pprint books that you needed or just wanted to read immediately, you either had to scan them, obtain a service to scan them for you or have them recorded by services like Recording for the Blind. At that time, having access to OpenBook or K1000 and a flatbed scanner was a big deal and, depending on your needs, might have been essential, especially if you needed access to print material in an educational setting. Now, things are much different. Obtaining accessible books is much easier. Phones and smart glasses can go a long away for many OCR tasks and so I just can't see paying $1100 for OpenBook.
@Lino_JR @tinygirl I thought it was but I haven't used it since long about the advent of Windows 7 when it hosed some Microsoft Framework stuff and made a mess. That's when I left it and got Openbook.
@robini71 @Lino_JR I use k1000 version 12 on occasion for reading my print mail, since I still find the flat bed scanner a bit more stable than the phone.
@tinygirl @robini71 @Lino_JR I can see it for reading mail. I actually started scanning a book that I can't find anywhere in an accessible format, so OCR packages do still have their uses. And there's something to be said for direct OCR to your own computer that doesn't go to the cloud for processing.
@tinygirl @Lino_JR I always had thoughts of scanning in hard to find books but always found that it took more patience than even I possess and i'm a patient soul. It was also difficult for me to keep track of whether or not a page had already been scanned or was waiting to yet be scanned so eventually I gave up on that idea. But I bless others who still do it and submit to Bookshare and the like.
