Sign this petition if you like Mastodon. The UK's online safety act doesn't just target big social media. Any sufficiently large site hosting user content is targeted. Even your Mastodon instance.

Lots of countries are making laws like it, which make it harder for *us*. It puts the onus on service providers to remove "harmful content" - draconian in itself and "harmful" is vague, often something otherwise legal so the Act is an attack on free speech.

Linux communities beware of #PewDiePie fans

Regardless of PewDiePie’s personal #politics (which clearly, at the very least are problematic), it is fairly well known by anyone who has been following him for any number of years that the vast majority of his fan base are enthusiastic fascists.

Now #PewDiePie , who’s content centers around PC gaming and Windows, has decided to switch to #Linux and published a video encouraging his followers to do the same. This means a very large number of his #fascist fan base is going to be switching to Linux.

Now many Linux communities are going to be forced to more explicitly choose their politics. Like the parable of the Nazi bar, if the community remains politically neutral, it will become fascist in short order.

A few things to be wary of:

  • People asking you not to be “too political” or to “focus on the technology, not the politics” is a classic and highly effective fascist ruse to get moderators to lighten up on fascist elements posting in their community.
  • People complaining about free speech rights. The #Internet and the #Fediverse is already a domain where people can speak freely about their politics by running their own server and building their own community with few to no government constraints. You don’t need to compromise on whether fascists have the right to free speech in your community.
  • Arguments over your code of conduct (CC) and “safe spaces.” Keep them up-to-date. Research other people’s CCs, learn about the history of why these CCs came to be, learn about what the function of each clause of the code is included and phrased the way it is. These were usually designed to make explicit the fact that a community wants to be a safe space where underprivileged people can feel comfortable expressing themselves, and it is very easy to make people afraid to express themselves. Fascists understand these CCs and the concept of “safe spaces” were explicitly designed to exclude them, and often attack these ideas.

Are there additional term of use on the logo?

Looking at @Fabio 's laptop yesterday we may have agreed that there is an unacceptable lack of hexagons with nested Fs, and I wanted to fix this :D

JPG-PNG are available in all sizes up to 256px I believe.
I even ulpoaded this to git friendica I think, not sure witch versions, every once in a while I retouch something.
Terms of use are CC0 (actually NC) but in the case of friendica anything goes.

The colored circular image is a svg "permafluer", published creative commons by someone else in some CC svg catalogue site. The copy left is from a SVG creative commons site. The friendica base is from a friendica logo itself.
Gimme a day and I look up all the info with links if I can.

Versions of this have been used as canvas for forum profiles, see here to get an idea:

Aww yeah, the Godot game engine 4.5 dev 3 snapshot is out.

For those of you to whom that's just alphabet soup, 4.5 dev 3 integrates AccessKit! This means that the editor UI, and any game UIs made with it, are screen reader accessible out of the box.

I just spun up an instance in a Fedora distrobox. Haven't gotten far, but the intro and project creation dialogs are certainly usable. Though the creation dialog seems to set its content as the label for all fields which is verbose. Filing that issue but still this is an amazing development!

Sunday.
A weekend of volunteering for me. I spent a few hours yesterday providing real time Braille during the funeral of the late Pope. We had the liturgy and readings in both their native languages and English, words to the hymns, and AI-generated braille descriptions of the visuals. Only supporting a dozen or so deafblind people with the technology skills to keep up, but that's a handful of people who wouldn't have been able to participate as well otherwise.

Today, the charity that employs the wife have over 150 runners in the London Marathon, so I'm helping direct their supporters as to when and for whom to cheer, and helping maintain the massive spreadsheet. The marathon generates a lot of revenue for the charity so it's a big day in their calendar.

I know it's become quite common, but I still think of it as a miracle of technology:

With our internal combustion engine car, someone on the other side of the world has to drill into the ground, often under the sea, pump the oil into a tanker that has to take it halfway around the world to a terminal where it is pumped into a pipeline that takes it halfway across the continent to a refinery where it has to be processed so that a truck can come and take it halfway across the country to a gas station where I can fill it up.

With our #EV, I just plug it in and charge it with energy that comes right off our roof. I can easily extend the range by 200 km on a sunny day. The energy transport distance: tens of thousands of km vs. 10 meters.

@jan_petrus yeah, with energy from the grid the difference is not so big, there is still a significant difference. The vast majority of electricity is produced in our country. Even the coal-based electricity, which is the dirtiest from our mix, has much shorter transportation distances. The plants are usually very close to the mines. Nuclear fuel is sourced outside of our country or even continent, but it is also a much smaller volume of mass.

300 Google employees in the UK branch of its DeepMind unit have begun unionization efforts to protest their AI products being sold to defence groups especially the Israeli government.

This form of employee activism is dead in the US. Between the gutting of the NLRB and deportations for anti-Israel criticism, anyone who does such in the US is effectively giving up their job.

An old failed Venus lander will re-enter from earth orbit next month, and it could land anywhere between 52 degrees north and south. Which covers basically all population in the southern hemisphere and a large majority in the north, leaving out the Baltics, Nordics, and Alaska.

It weighs a thousand pounds and is expected to reach the ground intact. Previous debris from the launch landed in New Zealand.
