"Access to a free, fast & efficient screen reader has changed my life. Because of its qualities, my computer never crashes; updates are frequent & the software works well. It follows best the evolution of Windows and all software. Updating is fast & easy, it is available in all languages. The provision of add-ons makes it really efficient” – Silvie, France

📝 New post! “Lost in Translation: Tips for Multilingual Web Accessibility”

Does your site's accessibility hold up across languages?

I wrote about the practical tips I wish I'd had for making sure that accessibility efforts and internationalization/localization efforts alike don't leave out disabled speakers of other languages than our own.

It’s been 5 months since Australian Story aired an episode on NV Access founders, Mick Curran & Jamie Teh. The first Australian Story episode to be audio described. It was an incredible opportunity to share with a wider audience the importance of NVDA & our overarching message, that everyone deserves equal access to technology.

You can still watch the Australian Story episode, with Audio Description, on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=3i7gkN-1sA…

@Sonny Might you be looking for @Hypra ? Linux desktop #a11y is one of their expertises and they were greatly contributing to @LibreOffice

Hi there, does it have #a11y support? I tried the portable windows version with NVDA and the screen reader doesn't seem to be able to recognise anything.

Is it just me, or is the interface for searching in #thunderbird really clunky with #NVDAsr? Seems like it takes a lot of steps just to view the list of results. I find myself resorting to iOS mail if I need to track down a message from a few days ago. Is it better with a different #Screenreader? #accessibility #a11y #Jaws #JFW

New blog post: Enhancing Accessibility with AI and ML

Not picking on anyone, but I just saw someone asking devs not to use "2FA" in user messages, and instead use "two factor authentication."

2FA is 3 syllables. Two factor authentication is 8.

From my #a11y use case, 2FA is an accommodation.

I would argue that there's already an HTML way to solve this problem, and that's the html abbr element with the title attribute.

I recently discovered a feature for moderators where you can help with accessibility. When moderating a hashtag, you can change its display name to replace lower-case with upper-case letters. This will help both dyslexics and vision impaired people.

If you can afford an extra minute or two to fix these while moderating trends, it will make them easier to read for everybody, especially the really long tags in hashtag games.

Just talking about audio chat, I recently tried out #Audon, which is a web-based audio chat for mastodon and fedi accounts. You can try it on audon.space/

The #a11y is not perfect, but it can be used. First time you use it you need to authorise it with your fedi account. After that, if you're the host of a room, you need to authorise people coming in. If you just want to join a room the host should give you the link, which you can get from the address bar, and that's it.
