#AndroidAppRain at apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid today brings you 8 updated and 1 added apps:

* ZXTune - Chiptunes player: lets you play music from ZX Spectrum, Amiga, Atari, Commodore and more 🛡️

An update to Lanis had to be rolled back, as some proprietary components sneaked in. They were already identified and the issue fixed upstream, so it's not "stalled forever".

Enjoy your #free #Android #apps with the #IzzyOnDroid repo :awesome:

So you think that Big Tech monitoring your every move isn’t a problem?

But what if you show up at the hotel at 9pm and the hotelier can ask a credit bureau how much you can afford to pay for the room? What if they can find out that you’re in chemotherapy, so you don’t have the stamina to shop around for a cheaper room? What if they can tell that you have a 5AM flight and need to get to bed right now? What if they charge you more because they can see that your kids are exhausted and cranky and the hotel infers that you’ll pay more to get the kids tucked into bed? What if they charge you more because there’s a wildfire and there are plenty of other people who want the room?

in reply to John A Rooke

We have been doing this for hundreds of years without big tech monitoring. We just invert the scheme and call it "discounts", and that somehow makes it more socially acceptable.

Student and retiree discounts aren't what they seem. They're just a really poor way to stereotype people and charge you more if the establishment believes you can bear it. You're a single mom with 3 kids who just had her house burned down? Well, you're neither a student nor a retiree, and they're allowed to know your situation, so no discount for you I guess.

Just to give you an idea of how much software GCC 14's default of -Werror=implicit-function-declaration breaks, here are two pkgsrc bulk build results:

GCC 13.3.0: 24835/28450
GCC 14.3.0: 2589/28450

reports.pkgci.org/SmartOS/upst…

reports.pkgci.org/SmartOS/upst…

I also had to fix up a bunch of things before the build would even start.

This could take a while. And then the fun starts all over again with GCC 15's changes...

in reply to Jonathan Perkin

One of the more insidious fallouts from GCC 14 changes are in configure scripts.

For example, today I've been debugging why tcl's floating point support was broken.

Turns out its configure script test for whether the system is big endian was now failing due to exit() not being declared, and the compile test failure was being interpreted as amd64 suddenly becoming big endian.

I get it, you don't like Rust becoming popular, but breaking existing software in weird and wonderful ways is NOT OK.

in reply to Robin Bedrunka 🐞

🔁 Bachelor's thesis survey! Please boost! 🔁

As many of you already know, I'm a cognitive science student currently working on my bachelor's thesis about the relationship between internet users' identities and their online personas.

Specifically, I want to see how that relationship might be different for cis and trans individuals, as well as for entities with non-human identities.

I prepared a short survey to collect the data I'll need for the thesis and I would greatly appreciate it if you take the time to answer it and share it around, both on fedi and elsewhere! It is meant for individuals of all gender identities and ages and shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to complete.

Thank you for your time :)

* "Справочник по правописанию и литературной правке" Розенталя;
* "Трудные случаи русской пунктуации" - Пахомов, Свинцов, Филатов;
* ещё что-нибудь, что посчитаете полезным.

Crowdin:
ru.crowdin.com/project/mastodo…

in reply to jan Anja

in reply to André Polykanine

in reply to André Polykanine

@menelion ещё вопросы

in reply to jan Anja

@menelion

ICEBlock, an app for people to report and be warned when ICE raids are occurring in a 5 mile radius, is now the top social networking app in the iOS App Store.

We are all living in a Black Mirror episode.
engadget.com/social-media/iceb…

Microsoft is laying off 4% of its workforce (9,000 employees) which is separate from the 6,000 laid off in May, 300 in June and 2,000 laid off in January as low performers.

Today’s layoffs are to reduce layers of management.

The company beat estimates with $26B in profits and $70B in revenue during its last financial quarter.

@federicomena @ebassi There was this amazing GTK feature I used to use where you could open a context menu, and press some magic key or something and the shortcut would change live!

I loved this, maybe this is what you're referring to? I no longer think it works though, but kudos to whoever invented that brilliant idea, I wish it was back.

"ICEBlock - An app that allows for reporting sightings of of the US agency ICE - climbs to the top of the App Store charts after officials slam it"

in reply to Emilion

@emilion @hub feel free to read GrapheneOS' viewpoint about the ICEblock app and its claims to privacy: grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/…
in reply to Stephan Paternotte

@S_Paternotte @hub Thanks for sharing! Interesting that the app developers are misleading about Apple's and Android's privacy.
"ICEBlock app is very clearly misleading people about privacy and their safety. Apple has a list of which accounts/devices have installed the app. They will provide it to the US government if they receive a court order. "

Below, I added some hype music to mastodon.social/@alatiera/1147…

With that, I believe we could get a huge GNOME fundraiser drive going, by selling tickets to a philanthropic wrestling match between @alatiera and probonopd. Per tradition, the match could take place in an abandoned warehouse in San Francisco, kitted up as for a rave. KDE devs welcome.

I bet Jordan would smack Xorg down so hard that xeyes pops out, and we would never hear from X11 again as Wayland reigns supreme.

Well, I've noticed a new feature today - that is that yesterday I did notice it, but did have the idea there was some external reason - that while editing a document, if the computer goes in screen lock and possibly suspend, the next time opening the document which had been saved, but not closed, is no longer on the spot where I was editing, but on the top of the document.......

This is just utterly annoying!
And obvously shouldn't happen, but the cursor still remain where it was!

in reply to Joe Lion

My kids sometimes play a game they made up called “Alexa”, where one of them says “Alexa, play [song]”, and the other one has to sing that song.

But occasionally one of them will say “Hey Siri, play [song]”, and the other will say “I’m sorry, I cannot complete that request right now”, and they will laugh and laugh and laugh…

Imagine the following situation: your company receives a ZIP file with an invoice, and you're the person responsible for checking if all the details are correct, before sending it off to the payment department. You open the archive, and there's a single PDF inside. You view it, and all the details match—your company's details, seller's company's details, items and total amount are what's expected, and even the bank account number is the same as on previous invoices from this company. As everything looks good, you forward the ZIP with the invoice to the payment team, and move onto reviewing other incoming invoices.

A few days later you receive the same invoice again, but you already have it in the system. Just in case you reach out to the payment department whether it's been paid, and they confirm it has—great, no action required.

Another month passes by, and you get a "payment due" reminder. What's this? You remember it being paid already, so what gives. You ask the payment team, they again confirm the invoice was settled. You phone the seller about this, but they say they received nothing. So you head down the hall to the payment department, you open the invoice on your laptop, and start going through the details with them. But what's this? The destination account number and amount in the wire transfer and the invoice don't match! The payment team manager's face gets a bit red—seems like it was their mistake? But no! They show you the invoice, and the amount and account number match the actual payment... but it doesn't match what you see on your screen! How can this be?

Both of you re-download the ZIP archive from the email you've forwarded and open the PDF inside. And there it is—you see two different invoices. What in the world is happening?

Immediately you report it up the chain, and your boss's boss gets a pair of IT forensics consultants on the job. They investigate, and later you learn that your company has been scammed with a pair of different invoices hidden inside a schizophrenic ZIP file. This means that you—on your work laptop running a certain software stack—saw and approved the correct invoice. But the payment team—running a different software stack—saw the fake invoice inside the ZIP, which they thought was what you had approved. Even later on you find out that the seller's company has been partially compromised and a lot of their customers got fake invoices. But that's water under the bridge at that point, and the money your company transferred is long gone.
