in reply to Alex Hall • • •@alexhall It has nothing to do with whether a describer is British or not. Rather, there are two main factors contributing to some British AD feeling less wordy:
1. Domination of Red Bee Media, a company providing description for a number of primary TV channels, including all of the BBC's output. Their style tends to be on the more... minimal side.
2. British television has a lot of unnecessary padding around each AD utterance, sometimes up to one and a half seconds of wasted time. As such, the available time for the actual description is reduced, and it means that a describer cannot just throw in a short word or phrase in tight spots.
Even if you don't download TV recordings, the practices are ingrained within the styles of the main players who provide description for television. But there's plenty of British-accented AD from companies who've never described for TV, and hence haven't had to adapt to such limitations. For example, Descriptive Video Works and International Digital Center have world-class British describers.
