Не только потому, что кругозор у них сумеречно сужался, это уже как бы можно было стерпеть, но и потому, что они были катастрофически непригодны для работы с англоязычными первоисточниками.
Чемпион по спотыканию - caucasian. Потому что в медицинской научной литературе это не кавказец, как регулярно переводили (иногда даже развёрнуто - «представитель народов Кавказа»), а европеоид. Точнее даже так: нетемнокожий человек родом из Европы, Ближнего Востока или Северной Африки. Впрочем, к настоящему времени от термина резко отбрыкались, так что актуальность потерялась.
Второй прекрасный кирпич - cellulitis, который регулярно переводили напрямую, как целлюлит, хотя это флегмона.
Третий - angina. Изначально их в латыни было несколько. Скажем, angina tonsillitis, условно «боль в горле», и angina pectoris, условно «боль в груди». В русском языке ангина закрепилась за первым вариантом, в английском - за вторым. В итоге английская отдельно стоящая angina - это стенокардия.
Intoxication - это не интоксикация, а отравление или опьянение. При этом в английском нет одного слова, обозначающего то, что мы называем интоксикацией при инфекциях:

Когда в одном предложении видели pregnancy и intoxication, быстро собирали из этого токсикоз беременных, хотя на самом деле речь шла об отравлении препаратами (в т.ч. рецептурными), алкоголем и суррогатами и т.п. Но при этом, скажем, endogenous intoxication - это натурально эндогенная интоксикация ) Исключения тоже бывают.
Actual - не актуальный, а фактический, реальный.
Actual blood loss was minimal. Фактическая кровопотеря была минимальной.
Preservative - не нехороший человек, а редиска консервант.
Fabric - не фабричного производства и не фабрика, а ткань как структура.
Compression - не компресс, как часто переводили, а сдавления, то есть компрессия.
Exposition - не экспозиция, а воздействие, облучение, контакт.
Stroke, который инсульт, умудрялись переводить как удар в смысле ЧМТ. Причём если мы возьмём в кавычки, «удар», то уже прокатит как отсылка к устаревшему термину: «папенька скончались апоплексическимъ ударомъ».
History - это не история, а анамнез. Поэтому не история аллергий, а аллергологический анамнез, не история инфарктов, а инфаркты в анамнезе.
Abuse - злоупотребление, корни латинские, поэтому сюда же - абузусная головная боль, которая при злоупотреблении НПВСками возникает. И поэтому, скажем, alcohol abuse отличается от alcohol dependence.
Cystic fibrosis - не кистозный фиброз, а муковисцидоз. Сколько кандидатов на этом погорело... жуть.
Heart attack - это инфаркт миокарда. Тут есть нюанс, потому что в наших широтах «сердечный приступ» - понятие более широкое.
Accuracy - точность, а не аккуратность.
Anecdotal - не анекдотический, а основанный на единичных наблюдениях, то есть несистематический. У нас такая коннотация не является распространённой и общепринятой, поэтому прямой перевод всё-таки считается ошибочным. Не все считают нужный смысл.
Depression - это ещё и углубление, скажем, вдавление в кости.
Formula - внезапно может оказаться детским питанием.
Продолжать можно бесконечно, уверен, у многих есть свои примеры, да и я не всю коллекцию выложил. Приходили кандидаты с образованием переводчика, говорили что-то вроде «ты гамму напой, я дальше нарежу», мол, что там в вашей медицине такого, чего не было в моих технических текстах. Но нет. Я 20 лет в меджурналистике и то не все нюансы изучил, иногда сидишь и думаешь, а что хотел сказать автор своими синими занавесками...

When I asked them about it a while back they did say they were aware of WCAG and tried to code by it but I gave it a super brief look and already found awkward labeling within the first few minutes so I'm not sure how well that's going for them. @NVAccess @openproject To be honest, yes, NVDA is not my primary screen reader, but I do use it for tests and when… my primary screen reader can't cope with a thing NVDA can do correctly (though, situations where it's the other way around aren't also rare 😊)
@openproject No problem at all - we as much as anyone appreciate that there IS competition in this market - which makes things better for everyone. But of course, if there is anything NVDA doesn't do well, we are always interested in hearing about it so we can improve.
Gemini AI needs to be disabled on Android or it will override your privacy settings and gain full access to your texts, calls, and WhatsApp - even if you’ve turned off Gemini Apps Activity.
They store data for 72 hours because that's how long it takes for them to train models on your data. Then they can delete it because they don't need it anymore.
As far as I can tell, there is no Gemini on my phone, due probably to the fact that I only install and update via a third-party website, have no Google account on it, and have as much dialled-down and disabled as possible.
I currently have both Assistant and Gemini disabled on my Google Pixel Fold (original). No Gemini app to select and change the settings of. Will keep an eye on it and see what happens after the 7th.
Genuine question: if I completely disable Gemini on my Pixel I am sent "back" to Google Assistant. Is my data actually safer in that case? I see it reads the screen anyway if I activate it (mostly by mistake) and it absolutely does not have the same settings as Gemini.
@TimWardCam It is Google's AI assistant. It is on every Android device and in the google browser as the "AI summary" function. Failure to explicitly opt out of this on July 7 will result in Gemini digesting absolutely all of your personal information. Once this happens, nothing can stop "prompt injection" from being used to extract it by a malicious actor, and it will have the capability to perform actions on your behalf that require touching sensitive personal information, and even the most basic weak privacy boundaries are breached. This system is reprehensibly invasive and broken, but it is being pushed out anyway. This deserves everyone's attention.
Step one says "Open the Gemini app from your Android device". But doesn't tell me how to do this. This is typical of the "how to do X on your phone" instructions I come across.

i still have a samsung device with me. But i have removed almost all google and samsung apps(only kept some important ones. Without them it would bootloop).
The first time I booted my new phone I was able to remove the Gemini app, when I finished the Google FI set up, it came back and I am no longer able to uninstall the app, just disable it..
Looks like sometimes it can be an advantage that your phone is no longer supported with software updates. But of course it doesn't make it easier to shop for a new phone.
Does anyone know if this is still the case if I've never used the Gemini app? I looked into disabling the settings, and on the "Review key info to access Gemini" screen, (I had never enabled it) It gives options for "Use Gemini" and "No thanks" If I click No thanks, should I be not using it, or allowing it at all?

Okay, thanks. My UI recommendations: - handle the change server side and not while I’ve started reading in the UI - move the language selector in the main navigation at the top - before switching language, ask the user (e.g. show a banner “This article is also available in {detected language}.” With a button “Change language to {language}”.
I can't find any of these options on mine, so it's probably device- or region-specific. I know I have something gemini-ish on there because if I hold down the home button a few tens of miliseconds too long it decides to interpret that as a 'voice prompt gemini' press.
I don't have WhatsApp, and I don't see Gemini listed in my apps. But it keeps trying to turn on AI in all my searches. Even though I turn it off and hit save. Every time I reboot it's on again. Now what?

It won't do so automatically, I personally think there is just too much guesswork for the installer to do there (as in, too much potential for things to go horribly wrong)

An update to Lanis had to be rolled back, as some proprietary components sneaked in. They were already identified and the issue fixed upstream, so it's not "stalled forever".

What changed? I think the Stranger Danger scares of the 80s and 90s really did get to some people and it has now become defacto law that it's illegal for a child to be a child
there is game theory to letting kids go wherever they want, if you are the only person letting your kid walk around outside then they are the sole target of "stranger danger", in the 80s the danger was spread out more. of course your kid is more likely to be molested by their dad at home than stranger danger, but now I am the one digressing

So you think that Big Tech monitoring your every move isn’t a problem?
But what if you show up at the hotel at 9pm and the hotelier can ask a credit bureau how much you can afford to pay for the room? What if they can find out that you’re in chemotherapy, so you don’t have the stamina to shop around for a cheaper room? What if they can tell that you have a 5AM flight and need to get to bed right now? What if they charge you more because they can see that your kids are exhausted and cranky and the hotel infers that you’ll pay more to get the kids tucked into bed? What if they charge you more because there’s a wildfire and there are plenty of other people who want the room?
We have been doing this for hundreds of years without big tech monitoring. We just invert the scheme and call it "discounts", and that somehow makes it more socially acceptable.
Student and retiree discounts aren't what they seem. They're just a really poor way to stereotype people and charge you more if the establishment believes you can bear it. You're a single mom with 3 kids who just had her house burned down? Well, you're neither a student nor a retiree, and they're allowed to know your situation, so no discount for you I guess.
Oh yes. I did a lot of high school homework on GeoWrite / GeoDraw, and even a nerdy newsletter for my family. The software did SIX PASSES of extremely loud printing on my Epson dot-matrix, and I thought it looked so professional.
I even wrote GeoWorks a letter to please release an SDK for Turbo Pascal, because I was a goober who didn't know C back then!
