@blami No, úplně urban legend to není. V tradiční japonštině to má význam hluku nebo neklidu. Je to archaický výraz, který se v tom významu v moderní japonštině nepoužívá a zbylo to jen ve rčeních jako 女三人寄れば姦しい (když se sejdou tři ženy, je hlučno) a pak v těch kombinacích s negativní konotací.

@blami dohadovat se o tom nechci. Kolega v práci mi sice o japonské kultuře a jazyku básní v jednom kuse, ale odborník na japonštinu ani vzdáleně nejsem. Jen jsem jednou četl článek, kde to borec rozebíral a mám k tomu pár poznámek v digitálním notýsku. Prý to mělo reálný základ, ale dnes je to v tom významu archaismus a moderní japonština ho nepoužívá, protože se těchto vyloženě sexistických významů zbavuje. Menší vývojové a významové nuance ale nedokážu posoudit.

rooms are replicated equally over the servers in them. if you’re not comfortable having “creator” privilege on the room in question, then you can delegate it to someone else on another server with the new “owner” permission (PL150), assuming the room is v12
yeah I know how the rooms work, but having the public address change to my homeserver was very unexpected and definitely not desired. We sidegraded the room to fix it, causing our users a headache by having to jump rooms twice. Having my homeserver in the history chain is also not exactly desirable.

hm. when you say address, do you mean the # identifier (alias) or the ! identifier? you can change the alias at any point without upgrading it. and as of room 12, the ! identifier doesn’t have a server name in it at all. room versions are meant to be useful for futureproofing the protocol. sorry you got bitten by this.
the primary room address. We could not set it to matrix.org, only nanako.mooo.com, which is undesirable. An alias was also undesirable. We've had #slackware:matrix.org since the beginning.
unless something has gone wrong, any mod on matrix.org should be able to give the room an address on matrix.org, and then the admin should be able to set that address to be the canonical alias. perhaps the problem was not having a mod on matrix.org?

If you want to run a Pleroma server with open registrations and guarantee all users are 18 years of age, configure Paypal as your OAuth Consumer and require users to login with a Paypal account.
Paypal will do the age verification for you. Also makes bans pretty effective too as they can't just sign up with a new account.

the argument against mandatory age verification is "fuck off with that shit" and the response is loudly moving your economic activity to a different jurisdiction. Not complying if you are under MS jurisdiction is not an option because the state will just bankrupt you with fines.

The Fediverse can't handle a million servers with the current design and there aren't enough people capable of doing it themselves anyway. This is no different than telling people to buy tools and a Haynes for their cars instead of going to a mechanic. Very few people have the time and capability to do so.

I think that once properly setup Fedi server is pretty low maintenance — we just love to tinker with things, that is why we spend a lot of time on it, but if all you want is post and receive replies, none of that is necessary: there is simply no moderation overhead if you're alone there But of course non-tech-savvy people shouldn't even invest time into setting an instance up from scratch — it should be a hosting template. I believe I've even seen a hoster that provides such an option — it should just be made more widely available.
Would you please elaborate on why it doesn't scale well? On the one hand, it's true — you instance has to notify more instances if everyone is self-hosting, if you have many followers — that's a lot. But on the other, it's less traffic to push around among individual instances. Sure — there is extra overhead, but to me it doesn't seem something dramatically different.
My other instance, where I have 100+ followers is hosted on a low-end machine from 20 years ago, people I follow are mostly from different instances too. Yep, it's snac2, which is the most lightweight Fedi server, but it works surprisingly well, considering that this machine also hosts and XMPP server and some other things in addition to it. Any more recent machine and even a cheap VPS would probably do fine.
- not everyone gets a static IP at home and/or have an ISP that even allows hosting websites; IPv6 penetration isn't high enough for the Fediverse to be IPv6-only. There are known issues with IPv6 federation in several different server implementations
- not everyone wants to pay for a VPS for this purpose
- not everyone wants to buy a domain
- even if they did, with ~7 billion people on the planet, there aren't 7 billion good domain names for them to buy. People aren't going to want to run servers if their domain name has to be gibberish.
- LetsEncrypt etc can't handle 7 billion new domains right now; it's already showing scaling issues and is a terrible SPOF
- first time the server is attacked with a DDoS they'll probably give up on the idea
- people don't have the skills to handle backups and validating they work
We have to be realistic. This is for hobbyists and enthusiasts. If we are ever to see people embrace this it MUST be as simple as a standalone app on a phone. Period.

@rude Mastodon software doesn't have any way to plug in an age verfification service so how as a Mastodon operator who doesn't code comply with MS laws? Furthermore Mastodon is AGPL so if you moodified it and have open reg you need to now host your changes somewhere.

Correct. So it would be against the law to host a Mastodon server with open registration in such a jurisdiction until the software can comply with the law.
This also means Pleroma may have to add this functionality as well if the legal pressures arrive on our doorstep too.
@jonah not quite, you have to be able to prove they pirated it. Just because we are certain they did doesn't mean we have the specific logs or other evidence proving it.
Also in jurisdictions where it's not illegal to download the pirated content, only to publish it -- they have to have proof they were seeding it.
This is mostly how they seem to be escaping culpability for now. And it's probably a good thing for all of us that they can't just look at files on a disk and say "hey, you got this illegally" without having more proof than that.
The ai companies keep arguing that the law needs to change, but that's like a burglar arguing that the prison sentences are too long, because if I steal 1000s of items, I'll go away to prison for the rest of their life.
