It is something of a fashion now to insert emoji by writing a colon and then, once the popup comes up, filter emojis by name to find the right one. Clearly, google has thought so too as they added the feature into Google Docs. They didn't consider one thing: the French language and the fact that one needs a space before a colon before the start of a list of things. bibelo.info/en/the-plague-of-e…

So many people are having a bad first experience with Mastodon because they're using the official app which is lacking features, doesn't allow image uploads randomly, has random slowness, and doesn't give you easy access to the two most active feeds where you can find people (Local and Federated).

Please switch to Metatext, Tusky, or Tooot for a better mobile experience (or even use a browser).

Out of the >15k users that joined this week, over 11k are on the official apps.

:thunderbird: Hello @thunderbird , I have been looking at your enterprise-oriented website enterprise.thunderbird.net/

I like what I'm reading so far, but I could not find the answer to what my company has been looking for:

Is it possible to enforce setting a master password when opening Thunderbird for the first time?
(or to enforce it at a later date...)

Thank you for the amazing work that's being done on my favorite mail client!

"Currently, the predominant business model for commercial search engines is advertising. But the goals of the advertising business model do not always correspond to providing quality search to users.

We expect that advertising funded search engines will be inherently biased towards the advertisers and away from the needs of the consumers.

Furthermore, advertising income often provides an incentive to provide poor quality search results.

In general, it could be argued from the consumer point of view that the better the search engine is, the fewer advertisements will be needed for the consumer to find what they want".

Quote: Sergey Brin / Larry Page, from the seminal 1998 paper that kickstarted the #PageRank algorithm - and #Google with it (see Appendix A).

Reading the paper that started it all after so many years is a quite interesting experience. 25 years ago they knew *exactly* what a search engine may have become if it chose the path of an ads-based business model. They were very aware of the conflict of interest that arises when you have to provide relevant results to the users, but also boost those that pay your bills.

In other words, were warning us about the risks of the business model that their own company eventually decided to embrace.

Since you seem to be getting excited about the redesigned calendar in #Thunderbird Supernova, it's an appropriate time to mention that the ENTIRE application is getting a modern UI overhaul in 2023!

You can track our progress here: developer.thunderbird.net/plan…

The 2nd (and by far biggest) wave of new #Mastodon user additions is declining... which isn't a bad thing at all. It gives all the admins some time to relax and to take care of their servers.

And it helps all of us to engage with interesting new accounts to make sure that they'll stay here. The amount of amazing new users, scientists, journalists, creators... this was such an incredible quality-content boost for Mastodon and the #fediverse

Thank you for being part of this. You rock 🤘

Sent out invitations to those on the waiting list for my free #RustLanguage basics course for #FOSS developers. Let me know if you'd like to be on the waiting list, too.

Next courses are in a week, on Sunday. One in the European morning, and a separate one in the European evening.

Let me know if you'd like to join either. Instructions on the web page.

Hi I'm Jay! I'm a writer, editor & developer who works in comics, games & books. I love #scifi, #fantasy & especially #StarTrek, #StarWars, #WheelofTime, #TheWitcher and way too many more to tag. BIG #BioWare fan, so expect to see loads of #MassEffect and #DragonAge here. I'm also a cosplayer with 120+ costumes. I stream video games, comics discussions, #TTRPG, art & cooking. I LOVE talking #comics, #cosplay & #games, so feel free to hit me up! Boosts appreciated ❤️

according to Fediverse Observer we just hit 6 million accounts:
fediverse.observer/stats

@mastodonusercount bot that gets its data from instances.social lists that we are close to 7 million accounts.

The Federation lists that we are at 7.5 million accounts (2.6 million recently active)
the-federation.info

All of these numbers are also quite meaningless! If the people you want to talk to are here then that's really the only thing that matters.

Everyone, if you are on Twitter, please put your Mastodon/Fediverse ID into your bio or your name etc. Ideally in the form @pruvisto

That way tools like Debirdify (pruvisto.org/debirdify) and Fedifinder (fedifinder.glitch.me) can easily pick it up and your Twitter friends can find you on here more easily.

It looks like a lot of organizations are going to need to update their #SocialMedia icons, so I decided to put up a few which include #mastodon.

My goal is to produce #SVG images that respect dark mode, can be easily styled with CSS, and also allow either circle, square or no background.

I want to embed best practices of accessibility, and web sustainability in this.

So what can I do to improve these?

Alright folks - my service which allows you to create and share follow lists that can then be imported on #mastodon is now online. It's an early version so be kind, but I'd love you to try it and create your own lists that you can then share with people:

Firefox is trialing consent dialogue handling community.mozilla.org/en/campa… Says will auto-click "Reject All" if that's an option, otherwise will click "Accept All". I think the second option - auto accepting everything, is EXTREMELY problematic. I get that we're all annoyed, but first Brave and now Firefox taking the lets bury our head in the sand approach is unfortunate. Its not solving the actual problem at all!

@IzzyOnDroid Except when using legitimate interests - which require you to take action to disable / opt-out / object. So hiding the banner will only avoid the ones where consent (or opt-in) is required, and you will lose the ability to inspect or control the opt-outs or legitimate interests. And there is rampant abuse of misusing these legitimate interests in the wrong manner, which is why hiding the dialogues should work in theory, but isn't enough.

I agree it's kind of a gray area. But if I didn't submit the form, those pre-checked fields have no legal powers. What if due to some browser quirk (or network issue, as most of those content banners are hosted by 3rd parties) I didn't see the banner at all? If I visit a shop site and don't hit any order button, I didn't buy anything.

But as said, gray area. It's not a "final solution", but still better as the alternative (except for simply closing the browser tab of course).

Is it good idea?
I think you'll like it.
