Google is upgrading TTS (text-to-speech) on smartwatches running Wear OS 4 to be faster and more reliable. This can be helpful for things like accessibility services, coaching cues in exercise apps, navigation cues, and reading aloud alerts through the speaker or connected headphones.
Google's new TTS engine for Wear OS 4 uses "decreased prosody ML models" to enable faster synthesis on smartwatches.
@Tutanota In your newest blog post (tuta.com/blog/app-tracking), why do you recommend a paid closed source app for managing permissions, when this has been built into Android since 2019? 😅 Are there any special cases where Androids permission manager is not sufficient? I'm not sure how often I've directly articulated this fundamental change in my thinking. Many people have been convinced that arguing and debating your goals and values with those in the opposition is the best way to influence people. I just don't believe that anymore. I realize that I haven't even described what things I want to influence people on. That's because I'm speaking generally. This can apply to things both big and small. Politics is the most obvious. (I really wish the voters in SF hadn't just voted to expand police budgets and give them more tools to oppress.)
But it's more niche stuff too. Frontend development is in bad shape right now. And so is interviewing for technical roles. I care about a lot of things.
Here are some things I do feel that I've learned about influencing people: 1. The people most eager to respond will be people who want to argue. I don't spend a ton of time on that. 2. There are always a set of people who like to debate because they find it intellectually stimulating. That's also generally a waste of time. Those folks are unlikely to take any action. Because often don't really have a stance themselves. They just like to talk about things.
3. There are a set of people who have a lot of feelings about the topic. They are *not* the same as the people who just want to argue. They actually care a lot, and their feelings are valid. But sometimes their feelings don't allow them to have a reasonable conversation about the thing.
I've been on the internet for a long time. This isn't a new thing. People won't have any other conversation with you until you first agree that they are 100% morally right. Anything else is a distraction.
This might be a controversial statement. But none of these people are the best groups to influence. They all represent a small minority of the larger population. Not that these folks don't matter. They're just not sufficient to create change.
We want to reach a wider group. Those who we need to convince to do something different if we want to see change. Those are the people I want to impact. But it's tough to know when you're actually in conversation with those folks.
I'll provide one concrete example just for clarity. I really want frontend development to go through a change. The complexity is out of control. The react ecosystem has the most mindshare by far, but is actually the worst solution in my opinion.
What do I want to happen? I want to influence a wider range of developers to choose something besides react for their projects. And I want to help galvanize a movement towards reducing the complexity of these systems in several important ways.
I've ranted about it a lot. (I made a lot of nerds mad in the thread below). The ranting is cathartic. But more importantly it's actually part of my own personal process of collecting my thoughts and organizing them. But I've done enough of that. Now I'm trying to figure out how we can push for change.
Folks like @slightlyoff have been fighting this fight for a long time now. He ends up battling with framework developers. (They all seem to think the complexity they are creating is fine and totally worth it. Go figure.) But he also engages directly with engineering teams. Average engineers who don't care what tools they use. Or don't feel like they have a choice. Or just go with whatever is most popular and thus most marketable right now. Those are the folks we need to influence.

i don't know if I'm great at influencing people but I feel like there's a lot of power in clearly articulating what like-minded people are already feeling, so that they can use your writing kind of as ammunition in their own small battles

Droid-ify doesn't seem to support automatic mirror fallback. You'll have to go to Repositories -> long-press IzzyOnDroid -> Edit repository and choose a different mirror in the Address dropdown
@Rhababerbarbar As @SylvieLorxu pointed out yesterday: should that happen again one day, in Droid-ify you can choose a mirror manually (there are currently 2 active mirrors available to choose from). Some other clients (e.g. Neo Store and the official app) would, to my understanding, automatically choose whichever is available so you should not even notice if one were down.

When upgrading to this version from a previous release, please note that there are CSS and HTML updates, config file changes, and several database migrations which may take a while to run! So please read the migration notes carefully :)
Release highlights:
Account aliasing. You can now set the alsoKnownAs field on your account via the settings panel, to indicate other accounts you own. This doesn't do much now, but it's the first step towards the Move implementation for account migration coming in v0.15.0. We originally wanted to include Move in this release but it needs more testing so we pushed it back. Hang in there :)
Much better thread sorting. Conversation threads on both the web view and client API use a new sorting mechanism which makes them way more readable. No longer will replies in a thread be scattered all over the place.
Better HTTP signature support. We fixed a longstanding issue with including vs not including query parameters in signed GET requests. We now try (and accept) both methods of constructing signatures. Which leads to...
Improved thread fetching. You'll see far fewer "orphaned" statuses in your timeline now, and you'll see more replies on statuses from other instances.
Syntax highlighting for code blocks on the web UI. When you include a code block in your markdown now, and correctly indicate the language the code is written in, it will be syntax highlighted when rendered on your profile in the web UI. This requires javascript, but it's a progressive enhancement feature. Visitors to your profile with javascript turned off will just see the code block without syntax highlighting :)
Improved "about this instance" page, with a link to the page in the nav bar. Previously the "about this instance" page was more or less hidden. We've now surfaced it better, so you can write all your terms and conditions and instance description stuff there. Relatedly....
Parse instance descriptions and terms and conditions as markdown. Previously it was very difficult to properly edit these fields, because you had to read + write HTML to do so. Now they're parsed as markdown. This means you can more easily include things like blockquotes, lists, etc.
Big refactor of HTML templates + CSS. We did a serious rework of HTML templates to fix indentation. Previously if you did "view source" on a GoToSocial profile page, you'd see a mess of sloppily-indented HTML. With this refactor, the HTML is now nicely indented and much more readable. We also did an accessibility pass and tested our HTML with various screen readers to try to make the web view a bit less annoying to navigate.
First pass at a basic spam filtering system. In light of spam waves happening on the fediverse recently we took a crack at implementing a filter to drop messages identified as spam. This is still in the experimental stage, but it's included in this release so you can try it out already. See the docs for details.
