Professor James St. André was interviewed by New Books Network for his book, Conceptualising China through Translation (Manchester University Press, 2023). The book provides an innovative methodology for investigating how China has been conceptualised historically by tracing the development of four key cultural terms (filial piety, face, fengshui, and guanxi) between English and Chinese. (to be continued...)

"What made me put my coffee down this morning was 'synthetically generating music', which apparently now falls under 'needs to disclose'.

Them’s fighting words.

Let’s say I fiddle with some knobs on my Eurorack setup (that’s a music synthesizer if you don’t know), and decide to upload it in the background of a video. Am I now making 'altered content?'"

Given the topicality of the Voice Dream Reader controversy, I’m doing something unusual and posting here the current version of my Voice Dream Reader segment that will appear in Living Blindfully 275 which will be released to Plus subscribers this weekend. You can email or phone in to add to it if you want to share your views. The audio here may change a little before release.

I’m writing a two-part series of posts that examines how people fail to use generative AIs responsibly, and the small subset of their current applications that’s generally okay from a theory-of-labor perspective (scraping and such) and from a practical perspective (a machine can’t be held accountable for honesty/accuracy). The first part focuses on this practical perspective. I need some help:

Can anybody come up with questions for MDN’s AI Help that does one of these things?

  • Mixes common and uncommon concerns. For example, answering the question “I have many DOM nodes. How can I improve AT performance using content-visibility?” requires understanding the applicability of browser-perf knowledge (something with lots of documentation) to assistive technologies (something with little documentation, relatively speaking). (TLDR: it’s an undersandable question likely coming from a misunderstanding of what content-visibility is and does).
  • Asks for something specific, within a commonly-addressed broad topic. For example: the question “How do I reduce my Time to First Bye?” is about a specific metric (TTFB) within the larger sphere of page loading times, but tends to get answers only applicable to other parts of the broader topic.

These sorts of questions are harder to look up, but would benefit from expert assistance. I need more examples. I will edit this post when the article is ready. :boost_ok:

I just emailed VDR with the following message.
Hello. Jonathan Mosen is a well-respected podcaster. On this segment of this episode of his Living Blindfully podcast he first plays a recorded comment from someone commenting on your subscription plan followed by his own comments. I would encourage you to listen to his response. His perspective is balanced and respectfully presented and he brings up some points which I hope you might consider. For my part I feel that you should honor your commitment to allow current users to continue using VDR with the option of not subscribing even if it means keeping the current version in the app store along with a new upgraded version. This would go a long way in restoring a sense of trust that some users feel that you have betrayed.

Tip of the day: Our Earth is struck by lightning eight million times per day and the power of a single strike can shut down electricity for a house, a neighborhood, or more. But there are also other potential causes of power outages, outages that can lead to data loss. Here’s one way to try and minimize potential losses of your data. #safety #tipoftheday devontechnologies.com/blog/202…

I genuinely don't have to wait for a Trump presidency for the ruination of the "rules-based order". Biden is doing fine in his own.

I really liked international public law in school, and wrote my practicum on the Western Sahara case. So I really want this stuff to be taken seriously as law.

But this rules-based order nonsense just annoys me because it's so clearly a power grab. Binding only when they say it is, only against whom they decide. What a world.
