@jackc Ono spíš záleží, kde konkrétně bydlíš. Když jsme bydleli o 3 km vedle na sídlišti, mohl jsem si vybírat mezi několika nabídkami 1 Gbps už před 3-4 lety. Teď máme dům v ulici, která není zasíťovaná, a musí mi stačit, co ke mně dostanou operátoři vzduchem. Máti má symetrických 512 Mbps za 250 Kč/měsíčně a mohla by mít symetrický 1 Gbps, kdyby chtěla. A to bydlí v malém městě v bytovce u lesa, ale ta bytovka je zrovna na optice. Je to o štěstí.

Pokud to má @archos za 350, buď to není klasická optika, ale je to optika v síti bývalého UPC, která je kombinovaná s vedením kabelovky, není symetrická. Jmenuje se Cable.
Edit: Ten Cable je buď v rychlosti 1000/50, 1000/80, nebo 1000/100, záleží na lokalitě

not explicitly, but a growing number of GNOME Foundation members and volunteers have been hoping we could improve the brand. The foot has a legacy but also has practical issues.
Nobody has explicitly approved getting rid of it, but also the board approved the new website design afaik; they could have said, “Looks great, but it needs the foot,” but as far as I’m aware, that didn’t happen.

The two main arguments I have heard are, “But we like the foot!” which of course, anyone will say about their baby, and “Ugh trademarks are expensive,” which, okay, fine, but also that shouldn’t mean we are stuck with something that a bunch of contributors actively dislike.

Why is the current one (with practical, observed issues in the wild) somehow the best that ever could be? that argument would fly if it didn't come from the same people that floated the idea of dropping the logo two years ago, and got lambasted for it. This feels a lot like a way to sneak it past the rest of the community, with zero input.
The current logo is the one that lasted the longest and it's the most recognised one; and all the objections ("it's offensive to some cultures") originate from the same people that don't want to rename GIMP.
I legit kind of love the idea of leaning into the cute little gnome aesthetic. Gimme a little gnome hat as the logo and I feel like I'd be happy—at least it would relate to the name!
I like the grunge graffiti aesthetic of this. And imagine a diverse cast of little gnomeys from all backgrounds all over the place too. It could be fun, even if it's not really a logo. Just a modern whimsical aesthetic.

@federicomena I think we can get to that point eventually, but so far every time I’ve brought it up to Foundation employees or members of the board, it’s been largely dismissive. Not maliciously so, but more like, “oh yeah that’ll never happen, you’ll never get everyone to agree,” and/or “trademarks are expensive, not worth it.”

Back in the late 2000s, I was a major contributor to the Wii homebrew scene. At the time, I worked on software (people call them “jailbreaks” these days) to allow users to run their own unofficial apps on the Nintendo Wii.
This is a sad development for user freedom. Transitioning from individual to collective leadership is great, and it is a monumental achievement that Marcan built an org that will persist. Those of us who have aging Apple Silicon hardware are probably going to owe this team a real debt of gratitude for avoiding the e-waste-ification of those devices in the coming years. But it makes me sad that the fuckups in leadership on Linux will not understand what a loss this is.

The part that worries me more is what Marcan said about sponsorships going down while the number of entitled users went up. It makes me wonder, not for the first time, if proprietary software, with some level of technical enforcement of the license, is the only way to ensure that developers are fairly compensated.
@matt I understand that POV, but I don't think proprietary software guarantees this either - a subscription model with friction is better (e.g. Red Hat) IMO, but there's lots of other issues too. People see $10 a month for a subscription as too much, but $10 for a beer at the stadium? Fine. $6 coffee every day? Fine. $60 a year for a distribution? Too much.

This is fine for those of us who don't buy from Amazon anymore, but if you have a standing library with them, make sure you get it all downloaded so you can break it. It's frustrating because you can't bulk download - I keep finding titles I own but missed grabbing somehow - but you have until Feb 26th to get them all.
Amazon is removing the ability to download purchased Kindle content, which is the only way to read it on my Kobo or elsewhere. What this means is I will no longer be purchasing (“a license to”–ick) any books by the mostly independent authors who exclusively publish there; just cancelled preorders.
I'm really quite sad about this. I love being able to read my Kindle books in Braille without their accessibility crapping out on me every few months or having to daisy-chain devices together.
