Looks like the Orbit Player uses a Mediatech MT6765 cpu. It is totally possible to: 1. Install apps 2. Enable TalkBack. 3. Use a keyboard with the device through ScreenCopy. All thanks to a wide-open ADB shell.
@JamminJerry Lol, the thing is even rooted via Magisk. The shell, Lotus, has superuser permissions, and is the default launcher on the system. The actual ui buttons in the app are, wouldn't you know it, unlabeled. One of them launches Android system settings. The other does who the hell knows what. Opening the podbay doors? Lol!

@jpellis2008 @JamminJerry ahahaha wow this is quite funny. Reminds me of a very cheapo Chinese tablet I picked up together with @Lprazdnik ($35) running Android 4.2. Kid you not the entire thing was plastic, including touch screen (still capacitive too!) It took like 45 seconds to open dice world, but wouldn't you know it, the entire thing had ADB enabled when I got it so getting Talkback and apps on it was at least a breeze. Gotta give budget things that. However, A $599 device, by any means, is not budget, so I'm honestly kind of shocked. But also not. This is Orbit, afterall. The company known for developing such unreliable displays that at least 3-4 friends I know have had problems with them and needed to RMA for new units. Sorry not sorry for saying that but they gotta get their act together LOL

@Tamasg @jpellis2008 @JamminJerry Meh I honestly have given up on Android-based assistive tech, especially from this particular company. I'm not sure why I am the only one making noise about this (or so it seems) but the Orbit speak doesn't even do some of the things it should, based on the product description on their site. Wouldn't be surprised if the player is missing features, too. Besides, Android AT products will generally be a few versions behind, will miss out on security patches, and most of the time contain cheap components for a very high price. No thanks. I got a sense player a while back, played with it for a bit and now it's collecting dust somewhere in a drawer.

I wonder what it is like responsiveness wize. will it puke if you were to threw a folder of say 1836 mp3 files at it, and ask it to play that folder in a randum mode. how long would it take to load that folder. smile. I ask these questions because I have had both a sense player, and a victory reader stream 3, and didn't like either one for different reasons.

I guess you also don't get anything fancy like a perkinns input, just a simpler design for nav. Still cool though, for now that stands as the cheapest Android-based blindness product, it does win that award, I suppose. :D

There's a CPU I'm way too familiar with thanks to Smoorez on YouTube, it's all over cheep chinese clones of iPhones and such. Guess they went for it because it was cheep to purchase and the performance is probably enough for a book reading device. But now you got me curious, I remember seeing from one demo you could select Google as an alternative text to speech, would the software pick up on other engines you install? Like the one you're probably thinking of but also on a more local note RHVoice.

@dusoft This isn't about what your bank charges you. This is an extra fee for cards issued in a different EU country (in this case Revolut/Lithuania). You may have free withdrawals in AirBank or Moneta and then you travel to a different EU country and the bank may want such a fee because it isn't a domestic card. It's like phone services before the EU regulation: you travelled to a different EU country and paid 30 CZK/min.
@dusoft Ah, now I understand how you meant it. Unicredit is in the same ATM network as AirBank and Moneta, but I'm not sure if their ATMs charge the same fee, will have to try.
The worst thing is this happens for Euro cards in other countries' Euro ATMs, which is just plainly hostile. And that's why these commodity banks are losing to Revolut and similar.

Autopilot was never actually ready. Not in waymo, Autopilot was never actually ready. Not in waymo, not in Tesla, not in.. Anything.. It is not ready. It has a bunch of flaws that I don't think are going to be solved until around 20 or 30 years later.
It has flaws, just like everything does, the only question is whether it's safer than human drivers.
For Waymo, the answer is a very definite "yes." No opinion about Tesla, I haven't actually looked that deeply into it.
The only problem with Waymo et al is what to do when an accident does happen. For a normal car, it's obvious, you just put the guilty driver in jail and that's that. For a Waymo, it gets more complicated. Imprisoning the executives wouldn't work, as with how many Waymos there are and how many miles they're driving, an accident is bound to happen if the design isn't perfectly safe, even if it is much safer than anything else we have.

@adisonverlice There's a report of all the accidents that have ever happened to a Waymo. In the US, those are tracked and regulated pretty tightly. Most of the stories rhymed with "the car was in a parking lot, there was a thunderstorm, the car got hit by a tree, nobody was inside, but the vehicle had to be scrapped." At the time of the report, which was a few years after these cars were first deployed, there were two "real" accidents, both clearly the fault of the other party as documented on CCTV. Those are very clearly safer than humans, there's no question about it at this point. Not perfectly safe, and that's a distinction that escapes a lot of people, but much safer.
You're right about the lack of accountability, and that is exactly the problem. It's the question of what do we want as a society. A safer car, but one where there's no sense of closure when an accident happens, or a car that kills a lot more people, but when your family member dies in an accident, you can watch the guilty party rot in prison.
@miki You know I do have a way we can actually do something about it. Obviously the human is not going to have any closure. But what if we did something like this. We have AI so you can't tell me that we can't do something like this. Let's say there's about to be an accident and they're going somewhere the car will stop and back away and alert the person that there is a car that that's about to have an axis. Or that there's an accident. And then the car will try to take an alternate route. It could be longer but we're not worried about how long the route is in this situation. We have patience we can handle it. We're worried about not getting into an accident. Or if it can't do that it will try to back away to the safest possible area. And if it can't do that it will TRY to activate the airbags or get them ready before that car gets hit.
