When the European Commission approached us about funding a bug bounty for BIND 9, we were impressed with the proposal. We have a policy against bug bounties (because we were frustrated with people wasting our time), but under this proposal, the YesWeHack team would do initial triage, and use their expertise to minimize the 'slop' reports. This is a game-changer for a small development team.
The bounty program is active, and we are looking for our first valid report.
@oneloop good point. But if I would run a program like this, I would feel obliged to inspect the entire feed every once in a while to determine how it goes. As I said, the traging is difficult work and I wouldn't trust an outside team to do 100% until proven.

@Tutanota iOS app - is it new that when I mark my emails and click "move" then the folders are suddenly presented in reverse order? Previously the "Inbox" was first and then it was my custom folders below. Now all my custom folders appear on top and in reverse order. It's kinda annoying, can you please make it like it used to be? --max-filesize will not even start the transfer if it knows that file size will be beyond the limit. if file size is not known, the transfer will start, but abort once limit is reached. what would be somewhat iseful is an option to allow fetching until limit also if size is in advance known to be larger than limit.

I went on a blocking spree today. I was scrolling through the Silent Sunday posts and blocked folks who routinely post images with no alt text. It's so frustrating to see a great image and no alt text, and I just don't need that annoyance.
But I was pleased to note that such folks were a distinct minority. Yay for everyone using alt text!

Question for the maybe five other people in the world who can answer this kind of question about platform accessibility APIs: Is it worth it to include an alpha channel in a color struct for a cross-platform accessibility API? Does any platform accessibility API actually support this, and does any AT actually do something useful with it?
Seems that IAccessible2 supports alpha, but optionally, and I don't think there's a single screen reader that does anything with this info, at least. Maybe some sort of screen magnifier, but I have no idea how those work. typedef long IA2Color A value specifying a color in ARGB format, where each 8 bit color component specifies alpha, red, green, and blue respectively. The alpha value is optional. accessibility.linuxfoundation.…. Pretty sure UIA just leaves the high byte of their long unused, but I could be wrong there. This isn't a complete answer and you probably already knew all of this, but figured I'd pass it along just in case.
I do think it might make sense for AccessKit to implement IA2 at some point. For Servo to be practically accessible on Windows, for example, it might be useful to have a bug-for-bug-compatible emulation of Chromium's IA2 implementation, so NVDA and JAWS's existing virtual buffers will work.
Just for the record, Chromium implemented most of its IA2 support based on what Firefox did. Gecko was the first on Window, and Chromium copied what Gecko implemented, so they would be compatible with JAWS and NVDA sooner. All the UIA stuff in Chromium only came into play once Microsoft started using it for Edge as well.
AT-SPI has GetAlpha (it has been there since before my time), but I don't know if any Linux ATs use it for anything. I took a quick look at Orca, and it doesn't appear to call it.

The people who dislike The Algorithm™ are either consumers who basically just want an RSS feed reader (nothing wrong with that) or people who brought audiences over from other platforms.
If you’re trying to create something and find an audience for it on the #Fediverse, you need some sort of recommendation algorithm. Otherwise, you’re just posting into the void.
People who say they dislike "the algorithm" mean they dislike the combination of A) algorithms engineered to optimize for "engagement" (read: addiction), B) societal pressure to belong to these platforms in various forms (e.g. gov announcements only thru said platforms).
Of course *SOME* algorithm is needed, people aren't opposing algorithms as a concept.
Algorithm is an instruction. It can be good, or bad, depending on what it's used for. Even Rubik's cube notation is called algorithm this fever of demonizing everything, confuses and doesn't take us so far
I think people get upset at "bad" algorithms. I remember it wasn't long after Muskrat took over Twitter that my feed basically became a sea of hate-filled rhetoric deriding all the "libtards", fat people, gay people or any other group that the conservatives there deemed "other" enough to be worth hating on. I would have posts "recommended" to me that were nothing but hate and divisiveness. Kinda like how Facebook "recommends" AI slop constantly now over your actual friends' posts.
This is a rather harsh simplification. Not everyone has a brand or corporation to grow. "Number of friends" is an old Facebook vanity metric and doesn't really hold up. What I'm saying is, Mastodon people seem to like to hang out with their small social graph in these spaces and that's okay.
@senesens that's obviously completely fine. However I'm also talking to a lot of people who want to grow Mastodon and the Fediverse outside of these small bubbles and attract larger creators.
I do get the need but it's the method that I disagree with I guess. Sort of the wrong place to elaborate my point but the thing is, I'm confused by all of these efforts that are trying to re-create the "big platforms" point for point but just "open-source" and run by a" non-profit" and "federated servers" or something like that. I'm not at all convinced that will solve their ills.
A noble effort, true, and I could understand how someone might just like the big platforms more than what the fedi offers today BUT... I think there's something to said about the culture and insular nature that's found on Fedi today.
Maybe Fedi is not just "trauma reaction" to the big platforms? The pains of federation, slow discovery, the whole "old-forum" dynamic that's going on...I personally find these "bugs" to actually be "features". Because ultimately, I suspect that when you cater to "brands" or anyone who wants to "~milk~grow an audience", it'll be at the expense of "people" that will have to share the space with them.
I'm not saying it's impossible to create a great middle ground that will work and I'd love to see Fedi take over the world but yes, my brows are furrowed at any attempts to reduce this friction that keeps this place sane.
@senesens I don't think that wanting to find an audience is inherently bad. Obviously there is *a lot* of slop on social media platforms. But there is also a lot of good content. And generally speaking the fact that anyone theoretically can be discovered through social media algorithms has been a great equalizer if you compare that to what we had before where a creator had to convince a traditional publisher or broadcaster.
@senesens I don't think "the algorithm" needs to be baked into the protocol or even clients. In the end, what we have in ActivityPub is a stream of events. The algorithm can just be provided as a server or bot that provides a stream of boosts for a given user. Because everything you do is public, the bot can just monitor what posts you like or interact with to personalize your experience. And it's completely up to you to follow such bot to have additional things in your timeline.
in my opinion a chronological feed and impulses is a good method for the audience to find you and sort of recreates what happens in the real world, where you get to know people, organizations or businesses that people talk about, or that you find on the street. An algorithm that goes beyond that is kind of cheating as far as I am concerned, and it is an open door for future bad practices. I think the fedi is ok as it is right now. 🤷♂️

I'm using DBPowerAmp. It has a really interesting token system that allows me to name tracks in particular ways depending on the genre etc, and supports identifying whether tracks have been wripped accurately or not based on shared checksums. This isn't free but I wanted something I could rip a load of flac with minimal fuss.
