I’ve been on Fedi for a year now and have fallen in love with the platform, so here’s my introduction! I studied computer science with a focus on RTOS and FP/PL, but I’m about to start my final semester of law school. I’ll be practicing at a boutique firm that primarily handles IP cases once I’m barred. I foilboard and I play way too many rhythm games in and out of the arcade.
I contribute to open source projects where I can, and I write up my experience in my digital garden which I’ve been maintaining for over a year now. It’s also a good place to find usage tips for projects/tools that you might want to use.
My passion for tech also includes privacy, and I’m an advocate for minimizing your digital footprint. GenAI is a scam and its purveyors are causing real harm while they sell it as hard as they can.

be-far's Digital Garden
Tip You will own nothing, and you will be happy. On my little corner of the internet, I document my adventures in tech and complain about the internet of shit.be-far.com
Update. I recommend @mmasnick's good take on the ruling against the @internetarchive and #CDL.

"What would you think if an author told you they would have written a book, but they wouldn’t bother because it would be available to be borrowed for free from a library? You’d probably think they were delusional. Yet that argument has now carried the day."
Update. Here's the court opinion itself.
ww3.ca2.uscourts.gov/decisions…
Most notable to me:
* The court ruled against controlled digital lending (#CDL), not just the short-lived and less-controlled National Emergency Library (#NEL).
* The court found "market harm" to #publishers even tho pubs submitted no data on that harm.
* The court recognized the right of conventional lending by print #libraries but (IMHO) waffled when trying to square its rationale with that right.
Isaac Hayes III posted on Sunday that ♦️Donald Trump and his campaign have been served in their #federal #lawsuit alleging 134 instances of #copyright #infringement.
Just like anyone else, ⚠️political campaigns are not allowed to use music for their own gain without permission or buying a license.
Since Trump has continued to violate the copyright of the Hayes estate, 🔸an emergency federal hearing was granted on September 3.
By choosing to disrespect the rights and work of others, Donald Trump is now forced to show up in federal civil court as the defendant in a case that could cost him millions of dollars.
Stop confusing publicly available with public domain.
These are not the same, at all.

Understanding the Public Domain and Citation - Plagiarism.org
Students don't always understand that because a work is on the Internet doesn't mean it's in the public domain.www.plagiarism.org
Awww, poor little tiny Internet Archive. Boo hoo! Poor Silicon Valley, having to obey laws meant to protect the mere serfs & plebians who actually make content for a living. Who write. Who create. Who are not just riding off other people's work. People. Like. Me.
That is NOT my app!! It's could be modifidd from the original in an unknown way, and surely a #FOSS #copyright #violation!
My app is _only_ available through @fdroidorg at f-droid.org/en/packages/name.b… or you can download F-Droid-signed APKs from @Codeberg (codeberg.org/marco.bresciani/T…) or the GitHub mirror: github.com/marcoXbresciani/TKC… and nowhere else.
BE CAREFUL!!
When y’all argue to abolish copyright so you can use other people’s photos, be aware that you are aren’t sticking it to corporations. You’re mostly sticking it indie artists who barely make rent.
Photographers, on average, make about $18/hr. That’s about half the rate of a high school teacher. Asking them to give up rights to their work is not a great look.
Open letter from Scihub and Library Genesis:
Fuck copyright, and fuck the capitalist vultures that hoard knowledge at the world's expense.

Who’s Afraid of Gene-Edited Crops?
Anyone who understands how intellectual property law works and doesn’t want to see it applied to staple foods. That’s who.

Who’s Afraid of Gene-Edited Crops?
A new U.K. bill is a chance at food security—if Britain can get past unfounded fears.inkl
As interesting as Georg Riekeles' recount of #BigTech lobbying in Brussels is, it's very sad to see him paddle the myth of "well-organised citizens' groups" & #DigitalRights orgs allegedly orchestrated by #Google in the context of the EU #Copyright Directive.
