Running #chatmail servers is <2h effort per month, according to an ad-hoc poll with 10 operators responding. Some have 10Ks of #deltachat users. Typically 300MB ram is used and max 60gb disc space per server. And all interoperate safely based on high security standards (DKIM and TLS enforced, and only no-metadata #openpgp encrypted messages allowed) .... with typically 0.5 secs end-to-end delivery. Who said again that email is insecure, cumbersome and slow? :)

Did you know that #deltachat does not need and does not use key servers? Most other messengers (wa/signal/matrix/threema/...) actually operate or incorporate a cryptographic key server, managing the cryptographic identities of all users. Delta Chat uses decentralized protocols for key management avoiding a central storage of identities. Shout out to AccessNow folks and @Xeniax who helped to convince Meta to unblock #deltachat invite URLs in Facebook. Previously delta invite-links on Facebook were marked as "dangerous" and didn't work.

sidenote: if you send someone an invite-link, they can click it directly after they installed Delta Chat because they will be guided through the "create-profile" flow automatically and then be dropped into a chat with the inviter.

I think my preference for IM might be going to #Deltachat for now. I dislike that Signal wants a phone number and is centralized and won't let F-Droid build and distribute a client. Also, I've been using Matrix and operating a server for years and I was a fool it's bad and I want to quit.

Deltachat works with any email account and uses it for everything, it's basically E2EE chat over IMAP and SMTP using a subset of OpenPGP. It's simple, FOSS, works fine, has stickers!

I'm currently working on a new npm package that will replace deltachat-node (which is still based on the cffi and NAPI).
The new npm package will make use of the #reproducible buildable deltachat-rpc-server binaries, which will make cross compiling much easier.

A nice side-effect to this is that the new npm packet is even somewhat compatible with #deno
Nice work on the part of Deno for their node compatibility!

Let me know If you would be interested in writing #deltachat #bots with #deno

#cryptography news: rpgp, the pure Rust #OpenPGP encryption engine used in all #deltachat apps, got quite some love lately, including a revamp of the main entry point for developers: github.com/rpgp/rpgp . You may regard rpgp as an extension of the #rustcrypto effort where a lot of the base code lives and is co-maintained by the wonderful diginifiedquire who also just landed a long awaited sha1-collision detector -- as one of the few people officially allowed to write crypto code :)

But ran ahead!
