Hi there,
the moment has come to do the first instance upgrade cycle in the life of this instalation to bring this server to the actual stable version 2024.12-1 in the comming days.

In part the idea is to document every step in a post similiar to the howTo instructions:
install and/or move friendica to ubuntu 22.04 LTS VPS server
in the @EDIT | don't follow! profile.

Right now we are on 2023.05, so we will have to update step by step to:
2023.12 | release notes
2024.03 | release notes
2024.08 | release notes
2024.12-1 | release notes

Are there any specific recomandations or details to have in mind besides the information expected to be found in every update release instruction?

This is basically a single user instance with round about 14 forum pages with few followers each and a total of 18 profiles with contacts in the activityPub and diaspora community and some RSS subscriptions. No other specific conectors are enabled.

Installed addons/apps:
blockbot, calc, impressum, js_upload, notifyall, nsfw, pageheader, phpmailer, qcomment, rendertime, showmore_dyn, startpage

DB backups amount to ~180MiB and the image file storage folder on ftp around ~400MiB.

Notes:
This instances right now seems to work well.
Sometimes this profile here has some strange hickups like when following up the link of a post from this server in a stream view a message "Not Found |The requested item doesn't exist or has been deleted." Also right now profiles from contacts, for example @ hoergen or @ feb don't show up in the contact list but they are displayed as followed in the profile contact page.

@RaccoonForFriendica We finally did it: we got access to the production channel on Google Play! A big and heartfelt "thank you" to all those who participated in the closed test program, without you this would have been impossible! 🦝❤️

The latest beta has been promoted to the "open testing" track, so that now everyone can become a tester and install the latest beta, which is a preview of the next stable release.

I'll wait until I improve notification support, so probably there is another month or so to wait. Keep an eye on the issue tracker to know what I'm working on, just in case 😉

For those migrating to the #fediverse from #Facebook, the experience can be a bit overwhelming.
Choosing an instance/server can be daunting, not to mention trying to match basic need with feature set. One thing I can recommend when inviting folks to the fedi is to gently get across that it's not exactly what they're used to. They have to be a bit more hands-on, since there is, for the most part, no algorithm.

From working in tech support for about 13 years, I learned that when introducing something new to the user, it's best to take one aspect and focus on teaching that to them. Get them a foundation, help them get comfortable, then move on to the next aspect. Education = empowerment.

Here's a list of the protocols I use/have used and my experience with them. I've done a little footwork, and made a list of servers by protocol for users to peruse. Courtesy of FediDB! I recommend going to each instance's about page and reading up on such info as character limit, location, instance focus, blocklists, and who they federate with.

One thing I can say for sure: My interactions in the fediverse - with a couple of exceptions - have been pleasant and rewarding. Fedi is truly a breath of fresh air when compared to the mainstream platforms.

Mastodon fedidb.org/software/mastodonOf course, the most widely known of the protocols. I've had more experience on it than any other. Mastodon instances usually have a 500 character limit. If one is particularly verbose, it may not be ideal, as you have to create a thread in order to have a longer post. There are other mastodon instances with larger character limits. Again, best to look at an instance's about page to get the lowdown.

Sharkey fedidb.org/software/sharkeyProbably my favorite thus far. Sharkey is a fork of the MisKey protocol, and has a rich feature set. It has a selection of reaction emojis, so you can do more than just "like" a post. If you're versed in MFM formatting language, Sharkey also has you covered. Character limits are usually higher. Sharkey.world (the instance I'm on) has a 5000 character limit.

Friendica fedidb.org/software/friendicaFor a more Facebook-like experience, and a practically unlimited character limit, Friendica offers a bit more familiarity to a fediverse newcomer's experience. It has events, calendars, and you can create groups, though you actually create a new page to act as a group. In all honesty, I find Friendica a bit clunky, but that's just personal opinion.

testing around with the software #castopod, developed by @Castopod :podcasting2: .

In general terms federation with #friendica works, even integration into public forum pages and reshare by those when the castopod profile is followed by the forum page in the first place, as tested with the forum page @podCasts. As of now following from castopod profiles apparently isn't implemented. Also as of now we didn't manage to get the cron job to work at that new instalation on a shared hosting.

What is strange is that a podcast episode publication doesn't embeed the audio player so it can't be reproduced inside the post shown over here on friendica. On mastodon this works, the post displayes a video like screen and reproduces the audio file.

Not sure if this is a specific issue of this friendica instance as it is stil 2023.05 or if this is something the latest versions experience to.

The uploaded audio file was in the format m4a.

Hallo Zusammen, weiß jemand von Euch was mit dem Friendica Server auf anonsys.net los ist? Ich kann die Seite nicht mehr aufrufen, bekomme nur noch einen 404er Fehler.

Leider weiß ich nicht wie ich @Tuxi ⁂ der den Server betreibt erreichen kann, deshalb frage ich einfach mal in die Runde.

Friendica: Sprachen werden nicht übernommen?

Man kann ja unter 'Einstellungen => Ansicht => Kanäle' definieren welche Sprachen die in den Kanälen angezeigten Beiträge haben sollen. Genauso wie in den selbst definierten Kanälen auch. Nun ist mir aber aufgefallen das diese Einstellung offenbar nicht übernommen wird. Den ich klicke auf den Button 'Einstellungen speichern' und wenn ich die Einstellungen dann noch mal aufrufe, ist meine Auswahl für die Sprachen weg. Ist das ein Bug oder verstehe ich da was falsch?

Friendica: Wegen X abgerufen?

Ich habe hier auf meiner noch recht neuen Installation recht häufig Beiträge bei welchen als Herkunft wegen X abgerufen. X ist dabei ein Kontakt mit welchen ich verbunden bin und der den betreffenden Beitrag Kommentiert, möglicherweise auch geliked oder Weitergesagt hat. Das ist aber für mich nicht Sinn der Sache, zumal das meinen Stream/TL sehr voll macht und dazu führt das ich z. T. Beiträge die ich wichtig finde übersehe. Also wie kann ich das abstellen?

This is mainly a maintenance/bugfix release with no brand new features, just:
- chore(l10n): translation updates;
- fix(10n): format specifier used in hashtag list;
- chore(qa): add more unit tests;

I'm setting up the process to be able to distribute the app on Google Play too. @RaccoonForFriendica do you want to try the new "Card" layout for posts? All you have to do is downloading version 0.4.0-beta02 and try it out! Using Compose Multiplatform, customizing UI is as easy as eating a piece of cake.

This version also contains a fix for the search text field which was not scrollable horizontally when its content exceeded the available width, plus some localization updates.

We're reaching towards the 0.4.0 milestone, just another feature (audio playback) and then it'll be ready to go!

@RaccoonForFriendica new version 0.3.4 has been released.

I'm sorry for having released multiple versions in so little time, this is an exception situation and is due to 0.3.2 not being available in F-Droid due to this issue.

The only way was to migrate to a different dependency injection framework and, if you wonder what happened, never use the Koin Annotations library if you want your builds to be reproducible!

This is mostly a bugfix release dealing with the most annoying issues you reported (e.g. the lack of management for expired tokens, accessibility issues, post editing with markup). Plus, since I've been adding a lot of unit tests, some minor bugs (e.g. direct messages pagination) were resolved too.

I'll keep populating the backlog with what you report and I'll continue to add tests to increase coverage.

Hello !Friendica Support anyone here who knows the docker setup for #Friendica well? I would like to migrate my installation to a docker based one.
I wonder if anyone besides @Philipp Holzer is familiar with the docker setup and knows docker better than me.

I am not a newbie to docker, but first questions that came up when I looked at friendica/docker where if I can still use the same config file I do use now, so not to uses these Environment Variables given under Friendica Settings?
Also need to figure out how to load the database I got (a dump) into this docker mysql, I guess that should be fairly easy with a pipe.

But it is all this little things that I am not sure about and that would take me ages to figure out without know what actually to search for.
