Regarding the convention specials from Freedom Scientific, I'm disappointed that home annual licenses are only being discounted at 10% as a convention special; I believe it was 20% in previous years. It's also interesting that we so far haven't seen discounts on any of their hardware, such as video magnifiers and Focus Braille displays.
Given all of the trouble I've had with my Focus display, purchased back in 2020, I'll never get another. Cells kept going out on it to the point of where it's totally useless to me. It is the worse piece of assistive technology I've ever purchased. It was in the shop under warranty as much as I got to get any quality use from the thing. I wouldn't wish my experience on anyone.
I’m afraid of encountering a Victor Stream III. I bought the Stream II as an impulse buy at #ACB16 and got a lot of use out of it, but it’s been languishing in my drawer for a while. I’ve gotten used to BARD Mobile on my phone. I’m deathly afraid the Stream III will have some function or other that I’ll believe I suddenly can’t live without, even though I’ve lived without it for almost 61 years.
@Thumper1964 I've used a Victor Trek, which essentiallyy was a Stream 2 with GPS, and I eventually sold it because I just wasn't using it a lot. The Stream 3 doesn't call out to me. While I don't want an Orbit Player, I do think that it will put Orbit Research on the map in the same way that the original Stream did for Humanware. Not that Humanware wasn't already well-known and not that Orbit isn't on "the map", as it's been around for quite some time, but the Orbit Player will give them an even larger customer base and I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be their biggest product.
@Thumper1964 If I were going to buy a dedicated book player, it would be a toss-up between the Evo 12 and the Orbit Player. The Evo only plays unprotected content but the majority of what I read lately falls into that category.
@Bruce @Thumper1964 I haven't finished listening to the Tek Talk presentation so there are still things I haven't heard. I do wish that the Stream 3 had Learning Ally support. I still use that service and they never seem to be a priority anymore. If the new Stream supports it, I haven't heard about it.
@Bruce @Thumper1964 When I heard the demo of the Orbit Player over a month ago, it honestly made me think that it was an Orbit Speak minus the Braille keyboard and the ability to write and manage files. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it does make me think of a scaled-down Orbit Speak Plus.
@Thumper1964 @Bruce I signed up with Learning Ally when it was RFB in high school which gives me free membership. I don't use them a lot and their iOS app leaves a lot to be desired but I've found books through them that weren't available through other sources.
@Bruce I haven’t had any dealings with Learning Ally since 2009. I joined them when I was taking some classes at a local community college and thought I could get the books I needed more easily there. Turns out #Bookshare actually served me better and it wasn’t worth the subscription price, can’t remember how much it was now. I grew up with it when it was known as RFB, and while it was great to get the books I needed, good heavens, the narration could be dreadful! I would take AI over that.

#Gnome #Files (#Nautilus) has a bulk rename tool for some time now, but literally every single time I try to use it I fail. Really, everytime I need to rename batch of files, I try it first in this tool, I recognize that my task is not possible done in it and than start totalcmd in wine just for this simple operation. Are my needs so advanced? I don't think so. For example now I want to add xml extension to all badly named log files. Impossible.
that should be possible with the "Rename using template" option, I think? Or do some files already end with .xml? I guess in that case a workaround could be to do a second batch rename, and select "Search and replace", and replace ".xml.xml" with ".xml" 😁
@mlundblad Files are originally named as [iso date].[uuid] The raneme tool cuts the uuid out and treats it as extension that will be always added back to the renamed file. It can only produce [iso date].xml.[uuid]
@mlundblad And good old totalcmd? Done in no time. I hate when I have to start windows app for such an easy task. I could also fiddle with shell command, but I am lazy to search and think how and I want it quickly. Totalcmd is faster. Sadly.
@HoutarouOreki we need to enable to work with file extensions. The tool just assumes that after the last dot there is an extension that the user should not touch.
Actually when you open rename tool, it prefills it with pattern [Original file name] and extension is completely omitted from renaming.
We need to not omit extensions, add them as separate place holder [Originial file extension] and just prefill them when rename dialog opens as [Original file name][Originial file extension]
It would be nice if I could only install Writer and Spreadsheets and nothing else. I only need that yet installer installs bunch of crap like Impress, Math and Draw that I'll never need and there is no way to opt that out during install. Can you guys fix that up?
@rejzor Well, calling components of the suite that the community works hard on "a bunch of crap" really isn't a good starting point for a discussion. If you want a genuine answer and not just to insult people: there is a huge amount of code shared between the components, so adding the ability to remove them wouldn't make a big difference. Of course, if you really want this, you could help the community to implement it...
Yeah, well they are useless crap for me because I don't need them but your installer feels the need to install them anyway and shove them in 50 context menus all over the OS. But it seems you're more concerned with feelings of a software somehow than understanding the issue at hand. Btw, at no point I criticized people behind it, so cut that bs.
@rejzor If you think that using words like "crap" and "BS" is a good way to talk to volunteers, who work hard to give you free things, then we can't really go anywhere here. It's just not nice behaviour when we're working hard to give you a free office suite – imperfect as it is. Take care.
Can you like, for a second stop throwing volunteers under the bus in attempt to frame me like I'm attacking them? At no point I ever mentioned people working on it yet you keep bringing it up. Just improve the installer so I can exclude components I don't need, so it doesn't pollute my entire OS interface with unnecessary components. Apparently that's too much to ask...
@rejzor "Just improve the installer" might be a bigger job than you think, and we have very limited resources. Can you help us to implement the change and do all the testing required? If so, please submit an enhancement request on bugs.documentfoundation.org and we can begin to work on it together.
If so many components are shared, installer should just not expose them to user then if they are unchecked during install so they aren't dumped in all the context menus, new files menu, open with menu. I honestly don't care if all of it is still present in Program Files, I just don't want to see it all over menus. That's all. Installer used to offer individual components selection years ago iirc, but not anymore.

With the decline of Windows in general, and the death of Windows 10, my mom recently got a mac mini so I installed LibreOffice for her and she's been using that for the majority of her stuff, like managing her budget and such. I'll send these her way in case she wants to take a look at them.

I just heard one of the strangest things in my life. I was generating one of my stories in Eleven Labs with my voice. I used the V3 speech model, which is in its alpha stage. Anyway... I was trying to generate a portion of text, and what came out must have been a thread of random sounds, emotional and inflectional changes in the voice, and a bunch of poems and stories all woven into some strange pattern. Not to mention, it sounded like it was speaking about twenty languages. To demonstrate my point, allow me to show you the first generation. It does speak a few of the tags, which isn't supposed to happen but as you know this model's a work in progress. I will paste the exact generation, which will serve as my transcript. I will post the... questionable material in a separate post. Natalie gazed around the dimly-lit hallway, her eyes landing on a stack of beat-up folding chairs against a nearby wall. Steven and Darla follow close behind, their nervous chatter a soothing, reverberant murmur. The dusty sign reading “Staff Only” hadn’t escaped their view as they’d descended the stairs that led them into this utility hall, locked doors occupying the otherwise bare brick walls. The staff parking lot was barely visible through the emergency exit glass doors that marked the corridor’s end. Natalie hadn’t expected their plan would be so successful. As they discussed details over lunch, she told Darla that they should just tell their parents everything and get it all over with. [firmly] “I’m not abandoning our cause. Lillie deserves justice,” Darla replied. [muffled] “Me neither,” Steven said with a mouthful of pizza. [confidently] “Trust me, it will work. [smugly] Ms. Briggs is easy.” Natalie leaned back in her chair with a resigned sigh. [sighs] [wearily] “I sure hope you’re right.” Ms. Briggs taught the fifth period English course after lunch. She usually attended weekly conferences on Thursdays for one of her students with special needs, which caused her to be a few minutes late. When the three friends arrived, there were only a few students sitting at their desks, their attention captured by books and touchscreens. Ms. Briggs always left her blue mug at her work station, which still held half a cup of coffee. Gingerly, Darla had slipped the laxative into the lukewarm liquid, watching as it dissolved. More students began filing in, Ms. Briggs on their heels. Darla shot Natalie a wink as the teacher hurredly took her place at the podium. Steven knew his stolen laptop had to be in the lost and found. Yesterday, he’d asked their math teacher Mr. Higgins if he’d seen it, and he’d casually remarked that it hadn’t been located, looking down at his notepad. Mr. Higgins wasn’t fond of computers, casting icy glares at students using their devices in the cafeteria. Steven wonder if that was why he was evasive. It didn’t matter. He’d overheard a janitor say to the principal that a computer was found by the bleachers. When he confided in Darla and Natalie, two of his best friends since the third grade, it was Darla’s brilliant idea to take some of her mom’s laxatives. Natalie chuckled, recalling the moment when their lecture on Hamlet was interrupted, Ms. Briggs making her hasty retreat with a sheepish grin. [eagerly] “So where is this conference room?!” Darla said as she brandished the shiny key with the yellow sticker she’d managed to slip from the teachers keyring as the class idly chattered. [curiously] [whispering] “Did you ever go in there when you worked here during the summer, Natalie?” [whispering] [hesitantly] “Only once, just to sweep,” Natalie whispered. She pointed out a small alcove in the center of the hall, ending in a set of worn wooden doors.

That’s the feeling I want us to create: “Wow, these protests are everywhere.”
Things like this are not just a symbolic expression of discontent.
Fascism depends to a •very• large extent on anticipatory compliance. It needs people to feel like things are going that way, it’s already a done deal, better to just go along with it.
