Several episodes into Earth Sound, thanks to deborahh@cosocial.ca for the brilliant recommendations, a decades old mystery was solved for me. Back when I used to camp, and spend a lot more time in nature, there was this intermittent sound, a beat that started slow, and got faster. It was of such resonance that you could feel it in your chest and in the ground. It’s a ruffed Grouse, and you have to be exactly in its line of sound, and if you’re a female ruffed grouse I guess you get pretty horney. Delta Chat is pretty close to Signal, but I find it easier on Signal to see which devices I have paired. Not sure if that is a thing on Delta Chat, as I'm sort of new to it.
no, not really because there isn't a central server keeping track of your devices. There are thoughts about this situation and how to provide a similar experience though.
ah -- we should have said that we were only looking at end-to-end encrypted messengers. Telegram is a fancy and fast clear-text central database viewer, not a private messenger. It has good messenger UX, and provides messaging, and naturally has a lot less problems with showing everything with just a login to their central database. so pretty easy for multi-device.
@rakoo at least Signal and WhatsApp don't even have proper multi device support. They have "primary device" that must connect to central server regularly or other devices stop functioning. IDK about Delta Chat, I hope it does better job.

The multidevice. Delta experience is great except for the moments when you turn on your computer, and if delta notifs are on, past messages will all come streaming in one after the other as the device syncs, creating a stream of unnecessary notifs. I have not experienced this on the other apps
there is some work happening in this area. A notification debounce was added recently and I have been thinking about this too.
The clients should know the latest message timestamp and what the current time is, and if they diverge a lot notifications should be suppressed as it's clearly backfilling and these are not new messages that need to generate notification events
@fu I know that there is no all-platforms app for #XMPP, but I don't see that as a disadvantage. Every app that you are used to use is 'good'. My personal setup is #Conversations on my Android machines and #Gajim on Linux and Windows. For iOS (I don't use Apple devices, though) I recommend #Monal, which I see as the most advanced app for XMPP on Apple. On Linux, #Dino is very promising, and I might switch in the future
Deltachat’s QR code is hard to scan with non-premium laptop cameras from a modern premium phone. It took me ages … One aspect might be that the screen size isn’t fully utilized on the phone?
@goetz large display maybe, but also there are better qr-code scanning libraries/activities. It's possible to improve but low prio because setup-second device is a relatively rare event, and a bit of a first-world problem. (>90% of onboarders are single-device according to some rough statistics)
…regarding UX: i really hope you will improve iOS support. Some missing basic features in Delta like “mark as read" on Apple Watch and Focus Mode support, made me return to Signal for now…
Ich nutze Signal problemlos auf vier Geräten (iPhone, iPad, MacBook und DOS-Rechner, Delta Chat habe ich installiert, nutze ich aber nicht. WhatsApp habe ich seit vier Jahren nicht mehr und ansonsten noch Threema auf iPad und iPhone. Signal ist am unkompliziertesten.
DC is easily my favorite UX of these 3 because any device can be the primary - needing to create accounts on Whatsapp and Signal with a phone and tie a phone number to the account before creating a quite awkward secondary on a computer is, especially after that WA data leak, pretty unfortunate.
other folks have mentioned some Matrix and XMPP clients, and while I understand why DC does everything with QR codes to mitigate MITM attacks, it does make that standard workflow of scanning a QR code off a phone into the computer a pain in the neck. Matrix's approach to a username/password and then key syncing via emoji checking is really universal and slick.
@Delta Chat it used to be signal of the three but they've made that more difficult particularly when using with two different phones with their own phone number. For most this probably isn't a normal use case but those off is with separate work and personal devices who prefer to have the same conversations available on both phones that sucks.
Of the OTHER options I have had best experience with XMPP based apps like CONVERSATIONS.
I more-or-less gave up on Delta chat because I couldn't get multiple devices working right between my personal Android phone and work Windows laptop.
is it possible your work Windows laptop was locked down and couldn't talk to devices on the local network unless it was an approved company network or a VPN?
@feld that wasn't the case at the time, though years later security requirements have changed to the point it wouldn't even be possible for me to test this. Since I spend like 12 hours a day on my work laptop, more often doing personal stuff then work stuff, not having that option makes it even less likely I'll actually use DeltaChat. I'm really wish I could use a webclient for delta chat. (And no, using my regular webmail client doesn't count).
@delta there is a web client proof of concept but it's not being actively pursued at the moment

As of now telegram is doing a better job than Delta in case of setting up a desktop device. Showing a qr code from a mobile device to a laptop camera is a bit weird and clunky. Let alone you need to have a web cam on your desktop device which is not always the case.
Signal is a nightmare, not because the steps are complicated, but because the transfer almost always failed for me. WhatsApp is kinda painless, apart of the phone number thing. Deltachat was pretty straight forward. Well done!
I think XMPP is the best since it uses one key pair for end-to-end encryption per device. Delta Chat uses one key pair across all devices, which may be a security risk.

I just do not have the time to write anything long-form about this but the ongoing Mozilla AI debacle is really indicative of a very, very troubling aspect of the broader AI debacle, which is that a strong majority of even the *actually* well-intentioned, smart leaders in tech have had their brains fully cooked by these heuristics machines
putting the sociopathic billionaires to one side for a moment, there are lots of smaller tech leaders who *are* in fact congruent with the kinder, gentler stereotype from the aughts of really smart, clever people who think fast and talk fast and try to make a "win-win" scenario out of their business
the problem is, this kind of person, who is exemplified by a lot of mozilla leadership, has to have a particular orientation towards leadership and problem solving. tech filters aggressively for time-to-market, which means it filters for leaders who are comfortable making confident decisions under uncertainty
this means that good leaders develop a way to kind of vibe out a technology, to quickly develop a partial understanding based on several carefully-chosen data points. even at the best of times, they become overconfident in their facility with this skill, because they are disproportionately rewarded for it. but also a lot of them *do* have a track record of trying out emerging tech and developing a sufficient model of it by intelligently interpolating between the features they can quickly test
LLMs are *absolute concentrated brain poison* for these folks. They try out the LLM to see if it can solve a few simple problems and then they extrapolate to more complex problems. Wrongly. They infer from social cues in their cohort, which are absolutely fucked by the amount of synthetic money (and maybe fraud?) driving a subprime-bubble type mania. They infer from the plausibility of its outputs, which are absolutely fucked because the job of these models is to produce plausible outputs.
lest we feel superior in *our* ability to clock LLM garbage, this disaster among elites is a microcosm of something even worse that LLMs and their sister technologies of shitcoins and spambots are harbingers of: we *all* have heuristics that we need to use to make sense of the world, and heuristics work because of an implicit presumption of good faith in many interactions. most presumptions can be hacked if some significant plurality of actors in a system are always seeking maximum advantage

Some criticism of people using AI is just mean. Just saw a post that said:

People just hate because something that took them 15 years to figure out is now doable by the press of a button in mere minutes. I don't get it. Its literally convenience why not use it? As long as you fact check your research and test things that you're having it code, why not?

There are in fact better criticisms of current AI products. They're trained on basically all of the work of all humanity (or as much as the AI companies could get their hands on), without the consent of the people who did the work, for the explicit purpose of replacing labor. Worth thinking about.
I suppose there is validity in that. I don't think about it too much though because stealing the work of others has been a thing for ages even before AI came along to the stage. So to me, that's just finding a reason to criticise for the sake of it. Using the work of others in a modified fassion is not even remotely new.
You know what, I'm just gonna say it. Some people with depression or other issues, if they get enough of those kinds of comments, might just take them seriously.
