Hi, I'm Regalia and I'm a cute dog delivered to you over JSON-LD. Most of my stuff here is just me posting about how I feel or what I'm doing, came from bark.lgbt before settling at envs.net here.

For the technical side, I do work around the social VR sphere, I do sysadmin as a hobby (bearer of the curse image here) and I dabble in video encoding (even if it can feel like witchcraft sometimes). I'm also the trans Arch Linux user, because of course I am.

Oh, also I'm gay. Really fucking gay. There's so many cute girls, especially if they have floppy ears. Pet them. Pet the dog girls.

I meant to post this on July 1st, but got far too busy. If you've ever tried to change your User account control settings with NVDA on modern Windows, you've probably noticed how broken the slider is. I spent 30 minutes writing a tiny app module to fix this exact problem. See this blog post for more info and the code: quinbox.xyz/blog/posts/nvda-ua…
in reply to Quin

And there's no reason the slider has to be that broken. It natively implements UIA (apparently it's based on one of the iterations of Microsoft's internal DirectUI toolkit). What you're supposed to do in that case is implement both the UIA range value pattern to provide a numeric value and range, and the UIA value pattern to provide the text value. And yes, AccessKit supports this.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt Interesting. Would you happen to have any idea as to why this tweak breaks NVDA's object navigation? Just another UIA tweak?

I urge everyone to read this post from Lucky Tran about a proposed mask ban in Nassau County that would see people fined $1000 for wearing a mask. As soon as North Carolina passed their mask ban - we began seeing other cities and states follow suit.

Mask bans are wrong. Period. We are in an airborne pandemic where one of our best and only tools remains a well fitted respirator. The idea that people should have to carry around a medical exemption (which not everyone can obtain) or face fines and/or arrest is ableist and discriminatory. These bans force disabled people out of society because they don’t allow us to exist safely in public spaces - and they will increase the spread of Covid.

Call, email, post… speak out against these bans. Let lawmakers know you won’t visit any city or state that doesn’t allow people to wear a medical device for personal protection and community care.

I would love to encourage y'all #GUADEC attendees to use the "Download" button from the event's Indico platform (that button is in each event's details page) to use it directly in #GNOMECalendar, but… it turns out that you'd run into this silly timezones bug where the event importer dialog considers UTC times to be the local time 🤦

So… can I motivate someone to send a merge request for gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c… ? This would be timely for #GNOME's main conference next week 😉

Good news: the #GNOMECalendar .ics individual event file importing dialog's handling of UTC times has been fixed in the development version! If you are running the nightly flatpak, you can already use it to add to your calendar the remaining #GUADEC2024 day 3 events you want to attend :blobcatcoffee: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c…

For Several years now, I have been interested in the accessibility of KaiOS, a platform used on newer basic phones. I have not been able to find much information online about this, and have decided to explore this further. I purchased a used Nokia 2780 flip phone from Ebay, and it arrived today! When I powered it up, I was pleasantly surprised to be instructed to press the Left Softkey to turn on readout mode. Sure enough, the setup process was fully accessible. I am now going through the various applications to see how they work while I wait for my SimCard to arrive. One thing I am finding though is that anything web based is very difficult to use. I am curious, is anyone here using KaiOS and if so, how are you finding the experience? I'm just surprised I haven't heard more talk about this as these phones could be affordable devices for users who don't want a smartphone.

Tamas G reshared this.

@Musharraf :verified: @Cullen Gallagher I think back in the days when @Mozilla was calling it #b2g (Boot to Gecko). They have experimented with #picoTTS voices. The built-in screen reader is called readout.
Now I know there are some interesting apps for #KaiOS such as matrix client, xmpp client, telegram client, RSS / podcasts, Youtube playback through invidious, openstreetmap, kodi remote control, ebooks / text files reading app and more. See at kaios.dev/2024/01/kaios-open-s…
It would be nice to find out how much #a11y there is with a #screenReader.
in reply to Cullen Gallagher

I meant to share this last week after I posted it, but somehow it slipped my mind. I have begun a series on YouTube looking at KaiOS accessibility. This first video takes a look at the initial setup experience on the Nokia 2780 Flip. The second video in the series comes out this evening, a tour of the accessibility settings menu. If you have any questions, let me know and I will do my best to answer. youtube.com/watch?v=YBnbgVnwsn…

@clv0 Hi, and welcome. The accessibility settings tour video will be released at 7:30 PM Eastern. I will also post it here when it is out.

OK, there we go – and apologies for the delay, but there was heavy #AndroidAppRain at apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid today with 21 updated and 1 added apps:

* Musikus: your personal practice companion

One app returned to #IzzyOnDroid on request of its author, though it's also available at F-Droid:

* LogFox: a LogCat reader

JetNote was removed, as announced earlier – and Occtax switched to a proper signing key.

Enjoy your #free #Android #apps with the #IzzyOnDroid repo!

in reply to tholaw

Before the update run completes & app-rain toot comes, some other exciting news from the #IzzyOnDroid repo that won't fit in there:

* JetNote was removed as it still used a debug key for signing.
* Occtax switched to a new and proper signing key, using key rotation, so even direct updates are possible*.

So gitlab.com/IzzyOnDroid/repo/-/… could finally be closed. There should be no debug-signed apps at IzzyOnDroid anymore after the next sync.

(1/2)

in reply to IzzyOnDroid ✅

(2/2)

*Your F-Droid client will most likely not even show the update unless you have "show incompatible signatures" turned on – and even then refuse to update. But downloading the APK and installing it via your file manager, or using "adb install" should work to update it without uninstalling, keeping all data intact.

in reply to IzzyOnDroid ✅

PS: The only F-Droid client handling such issues *right now* is Neo Store (you just have to "disable signature check" in settings so it passes the APK to the Android system). Droid-ify will allow that in its next release, there it was implemented about 2 weeks ago but not yet released.
in reply to IzzyOnDroid ✅

I still wonder if it would be possible to transition from F-Droid signed to developer signed reproducible built APKs via the key rollover thingy... I should probably take some time experimenting with it...
in reply to Julian

@j_r technically possible yes. Practicable no, for multiple reasons:

* you'd never get hold of the signing key used by F-Droid
* you should not give them yours either
* even if you would or they would, their setup would not allow it (that part of fdroidserver was broken back in January/February, as I just mentioned again). It would however work with IzzyOnDroid. But then a "seemless switch" would only be possible with NeoStore or Droid-ify, otherwise manual actions would be needed (as outlined)

in reply to IzzyOnDroid ✅

yeah about the first two points I though about maybe using some kind of "intermediate" key might work, that both F-Droid and the app developer have access to
in reply to Julian

@j_r But as pointed out, it would never work at F-Droid.org since they broke support for that in fdroidserver. It would have worked last year there, but now it no longer does.
in reply to Sentinel999

@Sentinel999 Which repo did you install from – and which repo are you trying to update from? IoD cannot have shipped a different signature than before as signing keys are pinned here:
in reply to IzzyOnDroid ✅

I dont change anything, since yesterday updates failed. I disable the sig check only.
in reply to Sentinel999

@Sentinel999 and now look at the "provided by": Installed from F-Droid, update from IzzyOnDroid. Most likely FairEmail is not RB at F-Droid, but let me check… Bingo. So F-Droid ships a version signed with their key, while IoD ships it signed with Marcel's key. Expected behavior.

> I disable the sig check only.

Which is why the update now is offered to you *despite the different sig*. This only makes sense if you override sig check in the system eg via an Xposed module. Better switch it back 😉

in reply to Sentinel999

@Sentinel999 and today we learned what the signature check is for 😄 While in this specific case a cross-update would (hopefully 😉) be harmless, in another case someone could have put up an altered APK with harmful code. So the signature check prevents you from installing such "altered APKs" – only APKs with the same signature (or a proper key rotation, in which case you'd need to disable sigcheck once *for that update only* in Neo Store, eg with the current Occtax) will be accepted by Android.

Okay, I think I fixed the link.

So, this is like, one of the first times I've done this, but I wanted to show a bit of installing Fedora Linux on my laptop. I'd already started the installation, but it shows most of it, and a bit of setup afterwards. I recorded this on my iPhone, so it won't sound the best. A few things I forgot to mention:

* You cannot buy IBM Viavoice (Eloquence) for Linux anymore, but it's of course still floating around.
* We also have DecTalk on Linux, obvious from the BTSpeak using it.
* You can also get Vocalizer voices.
* There's also Piper of course.

in reply to Soren Stoutner

“However, to go beyond existing research and web-only impact, we can turn to another browser extension capability: native messaging. This allows background scripts to communicate with native applications running on the host operating system itself. For example, password manager extensions that retrieve passwords from the native password manager application on the desktop.”

This is why you don’t want your password manager to integrate with your web browser.
