yes, channels scale in ways that group chats do not. In channels, the message size is constant no matter the number of recipients. In group chats message size grows with the number of members. In both cases, if a message is delivered to a hundred recipients on a relay, it will only take disk space once. So overall, channels should have pretty good scalability characteristics.

Subscribed to a Ionos vps in alternative to Hostinger, but the interface is much, much more complex (I'm referring to the vps and domains management) - thought Hostinger was the worst. But, if accessibility declaration on Hostinger says "partially accessible" giving an e-mail address (not dedicated, it's the generic support), Ionos makes me point to an Italian paragraph where they claim barrier-free then says "for support, contact us through contact form", redirecting to a German accessibility page where NO FORM is displayed. Is it this way to treat customers? Does @fsfe and @EUCommission have something to say? These are fake accessibility declarations. You can't say you respect all customers, when you make your showcase site mostly accessible but most important feature (the vps/firewall management panels) impossible to use. To give an example, the "edit" button for a single firewall rule is labeled as "y", the delete is "]", the add rule is "@" ... Not to say that @yunohost on Ionos creates ipv6 issues, the port TCP 25 is closed and I need to call them with EXACTLY my phone number to have them open the port for me... I must definitely try to talk to them and start the refund procedure. Unfortunately though, Ionos would give me 240 gb hard disk for storage while hostinger, even upgrading, would give me 100. @menelion I had to listen to my best friend on this topic. "double resources/storage for half the price, where's the trap?" Alex is right once again even without knowing a single letter of Linux, hosting, shared vs. vps, and all that stuff. Another big issue I had, was that you can assign an IPV6 address to your server, but then you must MANUALLY configure it by editing a file. /etc/network/interfaces or /etc/netplan. I found the documentation confusing and it is a very risky operation, you can unblock it through the ionos remote console, but, what about accessibility of that one? It's like a guy telling me we're completely safe, and he has a condom in hand. A condom with braille dots on it to make it accessible. Got the idea? Note for non-braillists: the Braille dots, in paper, are made through a pin which causes a hole on one side, the dot on the other.

This German engineering isn't for tough winters. The combination of rear wheel drive, tiny space between the wheel arches and wheels and the low wheel suspension makes it impossible to use traditional snow chains. Tried several of them, but going to mountains without any after all, quite a lot of snowfall forecast, it will be a lot of "fun".
@jan it seems like the only ones that work are the ones you can attach from the side without that traditional string behind the wheel. And they're quite expensive. For example the cheapest Pewag offers is for 7k. Great investment considering you need them once a year max. 🙂
Yeah, it's some time my mother had BMW 525, and the only option was about buying super-duper ones for about 20k czech crowns 🤣 just mad! Exactly, usage is just a few times in car lifetime. It might be cheaper to just ask dude with 4x4 or tractor to help. Funny, my sister put BMW X1 into deep snow last weekend and needed a tractor to get out of snow! Never happened to me with my Touareg or Discovery, and yes, I did try a lot with them 😀
@nirik I heard straps don't work, they break and fall off quickly. I considered 'socks', but they are quite difficult to put on, you have to move the car like 4 times. There are snow chains you can attach to the middle of the wheel, but they are expensive. Spending $500 on something you barely use once a year... It's funny that I had the standard snow chains for 4 years, never tried to put them on until now. All those years I had them in the trunk and I thought I could rely on them. It's like making backups without ever trying to restore them and after years you find out you can't. 🙂

I seriously wish there was a way to uninstall a program gotten from the Microsoft store. You can't do it via programs and features, nor can you do it through any third party programs. I mean, did it ever occur to these guys that maybe, just maybe, somebody might want to take a program off their computer?
@lerven I tried that. Had to go through the unnecessarily complicated procedure of looking for it in settings. There was no option to uninstall in the start menu entry's context menu.
@lerven Funnily enough, only programs bought through the Microsoft store don't show uninstall options in start menu for me. I'm using classic shell, but it's only microsoft store programs that do that.
Admittedly, this feels like a small problem to have, given everything that's going on in the world, but why does life have to be this way? I'm trying to look at the menu for where I'm going tonight, and I'm having trouble finding the menu on the web page that's supposed to have the menu. So I save the page and start looking at the source, and I find an image called Untitled_design_53.webp, with an empty alt tag, so I think that Orca just wasn't reading anything for it. I OCR the image, and there we go; there's part of the menu (there's another image named Untitled_design_55.webp). I haven't tried in Windows, so I don't know if NVDA or JAWS would have worked any better (NVDA does have a handy OCR hotkey, assuming I can select the image that I want to OCR). But this kind of thing is annoying! I shouldn't need to know how to do all of this just to look at a menu.

You know the new year resolutions? Those you swear by on the new year's eve party but drop after a week? I decided to give into one of those this time around and revisited Python, or any programming language actually, after something like fifteen years. I read upon a couple of introductory blog posts written in really simple language, played with print for a bit, set up some variables (I knew what those were for a while now but used them in an actual script for the first time(; made one variable request input from me first, tried on a "if" loop (yes, I knew those from Tasker and Apple Shortcuts) then got bored with trying everything on arbitrary fruits, names and greeting generators and decided to try and create something useful with what I knew already. Someone had a problem: a folder of audio files named in the template of season number - episode number series title - episode title. Only the episode number and title were needed and I thought: "Hey! I read about all the fun things you can do with strings, I can do that... maybe...". I sat to work. Inspired by what I already recognized as pieces of Python code, I decided to take a look at some NVDA addons and see whether I can understand anything. The first line: import os. Cool, that sounds like Operating System. I have heard of Python modules / libraries before, I guess "import" well... imports that so the commands, I'm sorry, functions can be executed and Python knows it can use them. Os sounds like something that interfaces with the operating system so maybe it can operate on files too. I googled that and bingo! it has a function os.rename that well... renames things to other things. Good, I can take that! Now how do I do anything from here? I guess I need to somehow make the script see the files I'm talking about. (1/2)

Helpfully, there was a function called "listdir" which lists everything in a directory. Questions upon questions. So how do I pass this into a variable? Do I print first, do I make the interpreter return it with this return statement thing I read about? Some searches later, aha! I just give the function and method as the result of a variable just by typing space, equals and space, just as I was giving my name or the imaginary fruit. Ach, yeah, I always need to couple the library name and the method - probably because it's external and imported. Good - now I only need the audio files, otherwise my script will be trampled in the process. I've seen some examples of the "for" statement but thought it needed a pre-established variable to reference anything, that for "x" means, I will pull data from an existing variable called "x". Several examples later, apparently the "x" will be created on the basis of the thing further in the line. All good, I made a variable listing anything in the directory. So now I filter down this list to show only the specific file format. By now, I have tested the "if" loops and I know all about Python's fondness for indentation and nesting. I preceed the line with a nice tab char and look for the right hmm... function? method? I find an example of someone trying to achieve a similar thing and they appended the .endswith method to the variable. I try that and then print the result to make sure (not forgetting the two tabs so that the function is nested within the "if" statement). It works. So now we get to the actual name splitting. I read about different operations on strings and splitting was one of those but still I looked up the right method - ..split. It can split by a predefined divider - great! that's exactly what I need. This is where the different data output types come into play: strings? lists? tuples? I read about that too but I'm not sure what the method returns and how to handle it to achieve what I want. I try around. It is not possible to split an once splitted string again when it had become a list, I need two variables, each holding the different portion of the string, then I reconvert the list resulting from the split as a string and split again. Also, I can't apparently request two list items from one variable in one set of square bracket so I need to add a second instance of the same variable with the other list item I need with the plus sign. Several reprints of output and syntax errors later my script does what I designed it too and the user is happy 1/2. (2/2)

I sat down to the first installment of the first tutorial on a Friday evening, the script was ready yesterday (Wednesday) morning. I took breaks everytime I got excited about a small achievement or learning something new and didn't want to jinx it. The script is simple, the code could be probably optimized and consist of fewer lines and even be better formatted for readability. An LLM could have spat a ready solution with one prompt, so why do I bother writing about it? Learning how to code has been my dream since I touched my first computer as a teenager. In my early highschool years I have considered following some kind of IT as my education path but the feedback I got back then was that I lack the structural, analytical, logical thinking required to code. I was able to scrape good enough grades in STEM subjects but I felt that I was replaying scenarios I observed in classes and not coming up with my own solutions. I tried a Python course back then but quickly lost interest seeing how much there is to learn before I get to doing the actually fun stuff and writing useful software. Many years later I wrote my first script that was useful to anyone and discovered in the process that I am now able to break tasks down to smaller subtasks which will let me achieve what I want, ask good questions that will get me where I want applying the terminology I've learnt, and that I've got the curiosity that leads me to asking very specific questions just to see whether my theory is right, even if they won't lead to answers straight away. I'm not sure how quickly I'll learn Python to the degree where I'll actually code something worth writing home about but the most important thing is, I discovered I have skills that I thought I never had and that might be useful in other areas of life. If you've always wanted to do something but dropped it, maybe it's worth revisiting that course, book, tutorial, podcast, human or machine and try again, you've grown as a person, circumstances changed and maybe you'll be able to nail it now. 2/2

I tried learning python years ago, I got as far as if statements and that true/false and/or stuff and gave up. I couldn’t think of anything I’d actually want to do with python, I was just curious to learn something different. I reckon I could sit down and learn all the concepts, but I don’t think I’d be able to write my own application because I wouldn’t know how to apply the concepts I had learnt . (1/2)

@oasisfan Interesting... How do you see coding coming from a language learning background? Would you see a lot of overlap between natural and programming languages? I mean, coding feels more like giving a lot of instruction and using the imperative voice with a lot of data, except it's structured but the "if" statements could be compared to conditionals and how everything needs to be structured so that the code works.

The only overlap I see is really if statements, because they are like conditional statements in natural language, maybe the true and false stuff, but generally know. I see them as two different things really. I mean, I can learn a foreign language and start applying it, but I can’t really do that with a programming language. I understand that you need abstract exercises to understand principles but I like to apply what I already know to the real world straight away as I'm more motivated then. December 16 I bought a 512Gb SATAIII SSD thinking to myself: "Ok, I probably don't need it right now, but I know it will get only more expensive with all this AI hysteria. I don't know if I'll be able to buy it in the future". $43 is a bit much for a 512Gb if you ask me, but hey, it's manageable. Today is January 8 and this same SSD now costs $125 in the same shop. All this is sadly wrong. Meanwhile I have to figure out which OS should I install on it.
I purchased one of the brand new Sandisk Extreme Fit USB-C 1TB flash drives in November at £86 from Amazon. Shipping even then was December 31st. It didn't come on that day, and when that day did come around, I was told shipping would now be February. That was vastly incorrect, it came last weekend. Anyway, when I went back to the site to possibly consider cancelling the item, it went from £86 to £122 and I thought nope, I'm just gonna sit tight and wait for it to arrive. I'd already paid out the money so why bother? Now it's here, that price is still the much higher price, so I'm glad I didn't cancel in the long run.

I enjoy seeing that many reactions to my thread from yesterday, thanks guys, I appreciate yall spreading awareness about this. And I enjoy this kind of stuff on Mastodon, as I said a while back. Mostly it's just silently reading the TL, but when it gets fun like this. Then it's fun, and that in a good and human like way. I still feel like I have a good overview and the discussion is mostly productive.
I'm saying this because I feel it needs to be said, especially after seeing a thread yesterday that really irritated me. You can be the richest person alive or living in a box. You could have a clean bill of health. Guess what? You can become disabled at any moment. Could be 50 years from now, could be as you're reading my post and getting geared up to reply and start the ablism agenda. Disability. Does. Not. Care. It doesn't give a damn who you are or what your circumstances are. The only "good" thing about disability and I say good with sarcasm, is that disability doesn't exclude, like this world does. So the next time you're thinking about posting something like "be grateful" or some other garbage when someone with a disability says something about access or some other basic thing that you as an able-bodied person don't have to think about or fight for? Pump your brakes and remember that that disabled person could be you someday. Edited to add: This isn't just about that thread yesterday, was this prompted by it? Absolutely. People with disabilities are told to be grateful a lot and it's not right. What people spouting this nonsense forget is that there's a good chance they can and most likely will be disabled at some point in their lives and then oh noooo. you're being rude to me because I have a disability when someone gives them a taste of their own medicine. Access isn't something to be grateful for, people fought to pass section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act if you live in the states so we wouldn't have these problems, it shouldn't be a fight every day. There shouldn't be this excuse of oh well I'm able-bodied, I didn't know. Poprvé jsem se na Zwiftu svezl s kamarádem. Už jsem měl zavřené okno, ručník na topení, vypnutý ventilátor a sundané tretry, když jsem si všiml, že @archos zrovna jezdí ve Watopii — tak jsem na to skočil zpátky a aspoň chvíli jsem si s ním zašlapal.. A ona to navíc byla má 600. jízda na Stravě.
Ale bylo to příjemné překvapení. Začínal jsem testem FTP, tak jsem se jenom vyślapával. Pomalu začnu s těmi tréninky na Zwiftu, abych se dostal do formy a udržel si ji. Docela se mi zamlouvají, dnes jsem je zkusil úplně poprvé.
