Welcome to December, friends and followers of my nonsense A fairly typical day around here for the most part. The daughter decided that she should read us a Peppa Pig story at midnight, so 'twas a slightly later start than expected. Her bedroom has been redone as a holiday gift and she's now in there. She went for a white and blue theme and has a double bed for the first time in her life, so she's pretty happy about that. She has a festive afternoon at Laser Quest to look forward to, in which I hope to sit and drink coffee and read.
The evening will be TV, prep for the working week, and a start on our more adult advent calendars.
To answer the curious minds on the adult calendars, The good wife bought me cider. 24 500ml bottles from Lilley's, which has become an annual staple. Pineapple yesterday. DeLish it was too.
She, meanwhile, received a bespoke collection of massage oils. I set up an appointment with a perfumer to source a range of complementary scent diffusing fragrences. Last night she had a neck and shoulder massage with a base of sandlewood and something I can't remember and whatever was in that little misting bottle - sorry, memory also gone on its name - really changed it up.
Not sure if we're going full-back or legs tonight, but the whole array of little bottles and the number of combinations is going to be great to explore throughout December.

It's very cool to see how far ahead of its time this was, and also how many elements from it survived in GNOME in some form! And of course, the multitasking is still unmatched by any more recent mobile platform :)

Heres' a strange piano idea I just did in Ableton. Recorded me playing the Spitfire Piano that comes in Sweet, then just added like six Grain Delay plug-ins on a send and messed with settings. Also tried Ableton's Echo, but removed that by mistake and just went with Grain Delay instead. Sounds kinda cool if you ask me.
Bro I really wanna get all these sounds from Sweet as well at some point. When I start apprenticeship I'll just probably throw the money out for it and a nice midi controller. Like I've always wanted to properly do some music, then I have no excuse to not.

Imagine you’re the most valuable company on Earth. Billions of dollars of cash on hand. Best engineers in the world. You could legitimately leave an impact on anything you work on. And one of the primary things you choose to focus on is stubbornly policing fucking game emulators. Like forget about whether it’s good or bad, it is just so unbelievably small minded. An Apple running on all 8 cylinders wouldn’t have time to give a shit about stuff like this.
Take a moment to wrap your head around the fact that Apple fought a multi-year court battle to try to prevent you from putting links in your app. I get that that may have significant revenue effects — but the point is that a company with Apple’s resources should have way more interesting and impactful ways of generating revenue. There is something deeply broken from a *creativity perspective* if “don’t let app devs talk to users” represents the state of the art in business strategy at Apple.

I don't know what possessed me to do this, but I did it, so there.
I was just thinking of all the things that used to bring me joy that no longer do, for one reason or another. I then thought about scenarios where good things turn into nightmare fuel. As a result of all that, I loaded sound files of my grandmother's clock, which she gave me in 2015, striking the hours of 1 to 12, into my DAW, and lined them all up at exactly the point of the first chime. As each instance of the clock chiming moves away from the start position in the imperfect way that anything mechanical like this will never produce exactly the same result twice, it created some interesting effects, so I screwed this up more by panning each track out, then manipulated the rate of each instance over time at a different point, then I washed the whole thing in far too much reverb and some LFO-based effects. Gave myself the creaps, honestly. So now you can experience it, too.

I've come to understand what's happening in frontend's decade-long failure to deliver decent user experiences as a sort of epistemic closure. I'm calling it "frameworkism", and the epicenter is now React.
Here's a lot of words on why we should all reject it, and what the post-React world should look like:
Frameworkism is now the dominant creed of today's frontend discourse, and it's bullshit. We owe it to ourselves and to our users to reject dogma and embrace engineering as a discipline that strives to serve users first and foremost.
