We are not all in the same boat .... This is as true for security and feature design of messengers as it is in the larger political happenings. Often security hackers and enthusiasts living in personally safe environments are offering strong opinions on what is important for everybody in repressive situations without engaging with people on the ground, and just looking from some abstract viewpoint. Welcome to December, friends and followers of my nonsense
A fairly typical day around here for the most part. The daughter decided that she should read us a Peppa Pig story at midnight, so 'twas a slightly later start than expected.
Her bedroom has been redone as a holiday gift and she's now in there. She went for a white and blue theme and has a double bed for the first time in her life, so she's pretty happy about that.
She has a festive afternoon at Laser Quest to look forward to, in which I hope to sit and drink coffee and read.

The evening will be TV, prep for the working week, and a start on our more adult advent calendars.

in reply to Sean Randall

To answer the curious minds on the adult calendars, The good wife bought me cider. 24 500ml bottles from Lilley's, which has become an annual staple. Pineapple yesterday. DeLish it was too.

She, meanwhile, received a bespoke collection of massage oils. I set up an appointment with a perfumer to source a range of complementary scent diffusing fragrences.
Last night she had a neck and shoulder massage with a base of sandlewood and something I can't remember and whatever was in that little misting bottle - sorry, memory also gone on its name - really changed it up.

Not sure if we're going full-back or legs tonight, but the whole array of little bottles and the number of combinations is going to be great to explore throughout December.

Here is this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video!

It's my birthday today, so I'll leave you to it and go enjoy some free time :)

Doing some software archaeology with @jimmac today, looking at webOS on the Touchpad and Palm Pre.

It's very cool to see how far ahead of its time this was, and also how many elements from it survived in GNOME in some form! And of course, the multitasking is still unmatched by any more recent mobile platform :)

Heres' a strange piano idea I just did in Ableton. Recorded me playing the Spitfire Piano that comes in Sweet, then just added like six Grain Delay plug-ins on a send and messed with settings. Also tried Ableton's Echo, but removed that by mistake and just went with Grain Delay instead. Sounds kinda cool if you ask me.

Imagine you’re the most valuable company on Earth. Billions of dollars of cash on hand. Best engineers in the world. You could legitimately leave an impact on anything you work on. And one of the primary things you choose to focus on is stubbornly policing fucking game emulators. Like forget about whether it’s good or bad, it is just so unbelievably small minded. An Apple running on all 8 cylinders wouldn’t have time to give a shit about stuff like this.

reverttosaved.com/2024/11/30/a…

in reply to Francisco Tolmasky

Take a moment to wrap your head around the fact that Apple fought a multi-year court battle to try to prevent you from putting links in your app. I get that that may have significant revenue effects — but the point is that a company with Apple’s resources should have way more interesting and impactful ways of generating revenue. There is something deeply broken from a *creativity perspective* if “don’t let app devs talk to users” represents the state of the art in business strategy at Apple.

December 1st! You know what that means. Show off your advent calendars! Or other non-denominational calendars full of stuff. I wanna see them!

Here is mine. Hubby filled it with #HazbinHotel cards. Also, one of my best friends made a personlized selection of 24 small surprise items. Can't wait 😊

(Hubby's getting #MtG cards. Kiddo is getting #Pokemon cards. We are a nerd family.)

Next Generation Internet projects adotta Mastodon e PeerTube come principali canali di comunicazione

@Che succede nel Fediverso?

It seems like our joint stand with @forgejo at #FOSDEM2025 has been accepted, thank you @fosdem!

For those of you that don't know, #FOSDEM is an annual conference for free and open source software taking place in Brussels. We'll be there throughout the event to exchange words and/or stickers with some of you.

See you in February!

Za mě naprostá pecka 👍 Mimo pár scén, dle mě poněkud přitažených za vlasy to bylo nabušené od první minuty do poslední. Bylo to silné, odvážné, smutné a lidské.

#introduction

As I just joined social.coop, it may be a good time to re-introduce myself.

I studied architecture and organization development, and work now at tangente.coop supporting community-led and non-speculative #cooperative #cohousing projects in #Spain.

Also experienced in sustainable and people-centered urban develoment, and urban #cycling #mobility.

I love and support #FLOSS #freesoftware, digital autonomy and libre culture in general.

in the next #ArcaneChat release: new option to control behavior of notifications of reactions and replies to your messages as well as the new mini-apps notifications in muted chats

don't lose important replies or reactions to your messages while keeping all the uninteresting chat flood/noise away 😌

LibreOffice 25.2 Alpha 1 is now available for testing! It's a mid-development snapshot, leading up to the final release planned for February 2025: qa.blog.documentfoundation.org… #foss #OpenSource

To reduce having to search the web each time, I added a bunch of frequently asked questions about #systemd such as using journalctl and systemctl in a more efficient way.

Are you using #linux and systemd to its fullest? Have a look at linux-audit.com/systemd/faq/ to see. Anything missing?

Feedback and boosts much appreciated to make this section even better 🤠 💪🏻

As there seems to have been another uptick in participation here, a quick summary #introduction (fuller one is pinned). I'm a UK-based (Londoner now living on #isleofwight) folklorist. Started off interested in #folksong, spread to wider interest in #folk #folklore.

Did an MA, liked it, so did a PhD on Contemporary Belief in #Ghosts - uhra.herts.ac.uk/handle/2299/7….

Currently on the Council of the Folklore Society, Associate Editor of its journal Folklore, & on the editorial board of #FolkMusic Journal. Until end of year I'm Research Fellow on #FolkloreWithoutBorders research network on EDI in British folkloristics.

I've written on #ghostlore, folklore about #rats, #cannibalism at sea, tongue twisters, popular representation of folkloristics. Increasingly working on folklore's history. Shiny research profile here: researchprofiles.herts.ac.uk/e…

Hi Mastodon. I'm Mick, a wildlife guide based in Granada region of #Spain. I'm looking forward to connect with fellow birders, botanists & entomologists throughout the Fediverse.

Regularly out in the countryside of Andalucia & further afield posting info & images about my adventures & encounters with the natural world.

Here's a photo of a close encounter with Iberian Lynx I took a few years ago.

I've come to understand what's happening in frontend's decade-long failure to deliver decent user experiences as a sort of epistemic closure. I'm calling it "frameworkism", and the epicenter is now React.

Here's a lot of words on why we should all reject it, and what the post-React world should look like:

On the one hand, our pocket computers with their relentless stream of distressing news destroy our attention spans and fill us with doom. On the other hand, before we had mobile phones with cameras, I would have had to spend the rest of the day doing the labour of going up to people and telling them myself: "I saw a duck take off."
