With the latest update to #Mastodon's web app, we show you a little reminder when you're about to post a picture without adding alt text. Alt text is crucial for accessibility, but has other perks too, such as making it much easier to search for your post—or filter it. Of course, the reminder can be simply toggled off in preferences.

getaddrinfo sucks. everything else is much worse

DNS is one of the critical building blocks of the internet and of the modern web. For the longest time the only way for Firefox to resolve a DNS domain was by using getaddrinfo.

If Apple complies with this, the UK government will gain access to all iCloud data globally. The only way Apple comes out of this with any integrity is to leave the UK market. If they give in to this, every regime in the world will demand the same thing. And that’s before we even get to the fact that there’s no such thing as a “backdoor” for just so-and-so. Either there is a door or there isn’t and if there is, anyone who obtains the key can use it.

It mentions that a 19 y/o man who's assisting Musk's team and who has access to sensitive government systems is Edward Coristine. Wired said Coristine, who apparently goes by the nickname "Big Balls," runs a number of companies, including one called Tesla.Sexy LLC

"Tesla.Sexy controls dozens of web domains, including at least two Russian-registered domains. One of those domains, which is still active, offers a service called Helfie, which is an AI bot for Discord servers targeting the Russian market.While the operation of a Russian website would not violate US sanctions preventing Americans doing business with Russian companies, it could potentially be a factor in a security clearance review."

The really interesting part for me is Coristine's work history at a company called Path Networks, which Wired describes generously as a company "known for hiring reformed black-hat hackers."

"At Path Network, Coristine worked as a systems engineer from April to June of 2022, according to his now-deleted LinkedIn resume. Path has at times listed as employees Eric Taylor, also known as Cosmo the God, a well-known former cybercriminal and member of the hacker group UGNazis, as well as Matthew Flannery, an Australian convicted hacker whom police allege was a member of the hacker group LulzSec. It’s unclear whether Coristine worked at Path concurrently with those hackers, and WIRED found no evidence that either Coristine or other Path employees engaged in illegal activity while at the company."

The founder of Path is a young man named Marshal Webb. I wrote about Webb back in 2016, in a story about a DDoS defense company he co-founded called BackConnect LLC. Working with Doug Madory, we determined that BackConnect had a long history of hijacking Internet address space that it didn't own.

Incidentally, less than 24 hours after that story ran, my site KrebsOnSecurity.com was hit with the biggest DDoS attack the Internet had ever seen at the time. That sustained attack kept my site offline for nearly 4 days.

Here's the real story behind why Coristine only worked at Path for a few months. He was fired after Webb accused him of making it known that one of Path's employees was Curtis Gervais, a serial swatter from Canada who was convicted of perpetrating dozens of swattings and bomb threats -- including at least two attempts on our home in 2014. [BTW the aforementioned Eric Taylor was convicted of a separate (successful) swatting against our home in 2013.

In the screenshot here, we can see Webb replying to a message from Gervais stating that "Edward has been terminated for leaking internal information to the competitors."

Wired cited experts saying it's unlikely Coristine could have passed a security clearance needed to view the sensitive government information he now has access to.

"Chen Yaozuo was a #Teochew prime minister & grand tutor of the crown prince of the #SongDynasty (960–1279) in the 11th century. Coming from a family of officials, he was a rising star at the start of his career, until he bravely, or some might say foolishly, answered a call of Emperor Zhenzong for open criticisms by submitting a memorial that spelt out the ills of the times, including matters that no one else dared to speak about. As a result, Chen Yaozuo was banished & demoted to become an assistant prefect in the Teochew prefecture. This happened in 998, almost 180 years after Han Yu of the Tang dynasty suffered a similar fate."

"....Chen Yaozuo was more of a problem-solver than Han Yu, and he knew this. At the same time, he sensed the Teochew people’s deep admiration for his fellow Confucian. Cleverly capitalising on this, Chen Yaozuo erected a shrine in honour of Han Yu and he used it to commence his own programme to promote education among what was still a backward population. In pursuit of this goal, the Sichuan native also set up a Confucian temple and places of learning, while identifying and encouraging able families to send their children to schools.

Chen Yaozuo left Teochew after three years of devoted service to its people. He subsequently revealed in an inscription presented to a study room in Zhangpu (a county in Fujian adjacent to Teochew prefecture) that his time in Teo-yor was passed without major worries, despite it being enveloped in miasma."

#Chinese #historians credit Han Yu for starting what we may call a #revolution through #literacy in Teochew. Yet the extent of Chen Yaozuo’s tireless contributions towards this cause can be seen by its fruits. Before his arrival, the Teochew prefecture produced only three men who attained the status of jinshi, the highest scholarly title awarded by the Chinese imperial court since the late 6th century. By the end of Song, the records show more than 170 jinshi from Teochew, of whom about a third came from Teo-yor.

Beyond scholarly titles, the creation of an educated class sparked a golden age in Teochew with accelerated advancements in agriculture and industry that ended its days as a backwater."

Very very nice, I could see someone laying down a rap to that if it carried on. I sadly couldn't get the ableton move at Christmas, but I've added it to my 2025 new years resolution and to be more music producing to try to do this and stay active is hard as I'm doing things 7 days a week, but I'm determined to get back into it and not to let my previous feers come over me again. I have to stop thinking negativity and thing positivity, although I've been through some bad experiences I've had in the past regarding my producing and it's all come to 1 grinding halt and boom, I end up leaving my mac untouched for years and years and gathering dust, not to mention a BeatPad II DJ controler which was a christmas present in 2018! So #Let'sMove and good vibes all the way for 2025

I tried to find when #Signal has published the most recent #security audit, and it turns out they either never published an audit or their code was never audited at all.

The closest thing I found is the list
community.signalusers.org/t/ov…
which only cites research papers and some evidence that in 2018 Signal paid Doyensec, but nothing got published as the result. Even then, it looks like the apps were not audited for more than 5 years since then.

WTF Mozilla? I'm hoping they just forgot to delete this verbiage from their terms of service, which suggests they are still working with the personal data removal service OneRep.
