@x0 I'm not aware of anything blocking add-ons updating on our end - could just be the authors haven't uploaded them / the latest version to the store yet? Re that new one, sounds interesting - and being able to solve Captchas is good - that is something we regularly get asked about. We have tended to avoid it because once we can solve it, so can malicious users, therefore they will eventually update it & we'll have to start again. But it's good to have a solution.
Anybody know some good blind/screen reader friendly utilities for better managing virtual desktops in Windows 11/10? I use 4 to separate out my workspaces. I'm blind, so this is the next best thing to having multiple monitors. Better yet, each desktop has its own separate alt+tab app switcher list. Unfortunately, it's a frustratingly manual process micromanaging which apps open on which desktop and moving apps that opened in the wrong desktop on startup. I would love something that can make sure apps/app windows open in the right desktops, or at the very least have some keyboard shortcuts so I don't have to dive into the task view and faff around with context menus to move apps around. Do I understand correctly that Narrator is currently not available in the installer for #Windows11? Does this apply to the out-of-box experience, or only the bit before that? I.e. if I buy a computer with Win 11 already installed, will Narrator work for the setup? #accessibility #screenReader
It is definitely not available during the installer, I just did one last week. Ended up using an answer file which put me directly on the desktop after installation so I can’t comment on the out of box experience.

Neither did I, but I needed a way to get past the installer on short notice with OCR and tapping around not really working well, because the new installer apparently doesn’t have any keyboard shortcuts and GPT giving me hallucination city when I asked which buttons were focused. A Web search found this site which worked really well. You can either put the unattended file on the flash drive that you created to install windows on or if you were using a disk or installing into a virtual machine you can just add it as a second cd or usb drive and the installer will pick it up. schneegans.de/windows/unattend…
@pitermach Out of box experience has featured Narrator in my testing, I actually didn't know it wasn't available during initial setup, that's definitely a regression.
I think opposite. OOBE should be fine, installer is not because USB devices and sound devices are not getting enumerated properly. For some this has also meant no input which is how the mainstream world got a hold of this. For us sadly it means no Narrator unless someone grabbed a retail non-updated Win11 image, IE, not made with media creation tool which has updates slipstreamed into the installer.
Not sure where you heard this, but I reinstalled Windows only a couple of days ago, using an ISO I created with UUP Dump based on the latest 25H2 release. Narrator worked fine. You can't speed up the voice and some of the speech codes leak through to the TTS, but it still works on the installer and advanced startup. The OOBE is a normal login session, so Narrator will work but you can also just shift-F10 and start a portable NVDA. I always use English US instead of English International because the international edition embeds a different Narrator voice, and IMO it's less intelligible. The broken rate adjustment and leaky speech tags are annoying, especially if you're trying to get anything done in cmd, but it's workable. I'd love to figure out why NVDA won't run in that installer/recovery environment. Something about its side-by-side configuration being invalid. But blind Windows installs are, as far as I can tell, working just fine.
@simon For context, I was trying this in a arm VMware fusion virtual machine which doesn’t have the easy install feature, so that might be a factor. speech did work after the installation was completed

The attitude. Devs for GNOME itself as well as third-party apps all seem united by an idea that software can and should always be made simpler to use. Instead of piling on features to solve edge cases, the problem space is reexamined, and old solutions are replaced by simpler ones which solve more problems.
All the advanced tech under the hood that is well integrated. RDP remote sessions, Wayland color management/HDR, calendars, connectivity and peripheral controls etc just works.
can I say what I do not like? Abandoning dark theme for everything except libadwaita GTK4 applications.
Want it or not, close to 80% of software is still on GTK3 or even GTK2. Without a dark theme for GTK3 GNOME switched from being the most consistent to the least consistent DE
I am an extremely visual person. (This is why I've used Macs for decades!) So I appreciate the attention to design and detail in GNOME and how much I can feel at home when I install and use new apps because of the HIG. Been running Asahi Linux on my Mac mini M1 and love that GNOME feels incredibly snappy and smooth!
@thibaultamartin absolutely; the work that the design team and developers of libadwaita and GTK have been doing has been excellent not just for adapting to form factors like mobile, but for tiling and just having little windows open!
Bringing that consistency and adaptiveness to the platform has been a years-long effort from a bunch of really amazing contributors, and we’re proud that it’s paying off no matter where you use GNOME apps. ☺️
Apart from what has already been mentioned I love the search because it lets me access almost anything instantly! In general, the workflows feel very snappy which is probably thanks in part to the consistent design.
For me personally and in my daily life the non-distracting nature of GNOME is the big thing. The focus on design and building a cohesive experience is a close second. There's much more than that though.
I appreciate Adwaita's design language, its inclusive community, and the innovative approach behind many of the new features that emerge from the developers' efforts 🫶
GNOME is design-driven, in the way that user experience comes first. While an opinionated approach may not suit everybody’s workflow, in my view it leads to better, more testable and more polished products.
Also the community. Started on Graphs as a humble side-project, and was positively surprised by the amount of help and feedback I got from GNOME community, including the always fantastic design team. There’s few processes where I learned more than when we joined #GNOMECircle.
Also, especially getting involved in development within the ecosystem, kinda was an incentive for me to join #FriendsOfGNOME.
The project has given me a lot with my own development work. So it makes sense to me to give something back, even if symbolically. In a sense it’s been life-changing as I don’t expect to have gotten in the line of work I’m in now if it weren’t for personal FOSS projects, where GNOME played a central role for me.
I appreciate that developers can write a GNOME application in whatever language they choose, as long as there are bindings available. Whilst I personally prefer compiled languages like Rust, if you want to write an app in Python, Go, etc, you can.

#GNOME shines on simple setups but seems to have some issues when the setup gets a bit more complex.
Furthermore, speed was an issue at my side: I was a heavy user of invoking the GNOME shell for starting applications and switch windows but unfortunately that was a bit of a drag to be honest.
I love how easy it is to plug in a Nextcloud, Google, Microsoft, etc... account and the ability to build software around these accounts with GOA is really cool (and super simple).
Doesn't overwhelm me with a myriad of configuration knobs.
Doesn't get upset when I only use part of the platform (in my case, niri + mostly GNOME apps, but no GNOME Shell).
The few times I interacted with GNOME developers, they were very helpful.
I've been a GNOME user since the dawn of time. I experimented with WMs other than whatever was GNOME's default at the time, but as far as applications go, most I use were GNOME ever since I first started up X11. We seem to have evolved together, and GNOME's nicely following my taste (or shaping mine).
I use Linux as my primary desktop OS since the days of Gnome 2 and tried a lot of different desktop environments.
I love that you make spirited designs decisions and strive for a clear user experience. While I did not like every single change right from the start, most are justified and you seem to follow a coherent vision.

@andreasio this is one of the many reasons GNOME has moved to using Nautilus itself as the file chooser.
GTK apps using the native file chooser API will automatically use the system’s file chooser, which is Nautilus on GNOME, elementary Files on elementary OS, even the native Windows or macOS file picker on those platforms. It makes for a more consistent experience over all.
As much as I love Gnome and want to see it continue to flourish, I had to leave it a few months ago. Every release sees things that are good and make it easier to use... while also removing or obfuscating things that are needed and require increasingly frustrating incantations and blood rituals to make work. It just smacks of opinion guided design against user requirements 😞
I‘m using a mix of Apple Music, which comes with my Apple One subscription, and Tidal, which I support because they treat artists well. I especially like the well-curated play lists on Tidal. And no, not missing anything. I never used the Spotify features like mix tapes or that weekly playlist anyway.

That NVDA translate addon is just amazing. Like @kc is writing in German, which I don't understand, but the NVDA addon just translates it to English with very few issues. From Tweesecake, from anything NVDA says, that can be translated. So I can understand some of her thoughts! Like just imagine that. She speaks a different language, with probably different thought processes, and yet, there they are, for me to consider in my language. Amazing!

Well, I’m officially 34 today. I wound up crashing hard for most of the night, but the good news is that this morning I feel pretty good — aside from the usual arthritis pain in my feet and hands and not being able to find one of my slippers, so I’ve had to walk on the hard floor barefoot. Something is changing my default output device to 24 bit 96 khz. It is annoing, because it doesnt change the imput device, so Reaper can not open it in wasapi. Today it probably broke my vdo ninja recording, which was half a speed. It seems that this happens after lenovo or windows update. Lets see if I can create some script which will monitor it and let me know when this happens again
