Elijah McCoy was born in 1844 in Ontario to formerly-enslaved parents from Kentucky. They saved enough to send him to Scotland to study mechanical #engineering. When he returned and couldn't get work in his field, he took a job as a train oilman and invented a method of automatic lubrication that eliminated the frequent stops trains had to make to oil up axles & bearings. Railroad companies asking for his product rather than copycat devices spawned the phrase "the real McCoy." #BlackHistoryMonth

I wrote this six years ago about Google's "family plans". It could quite easily apply to #Netflix and their recently announced changes.

The higher you climb, the harder it gets. Yes, we're still #foldingAtHome – but we climb much slower now that we are about to reach the 2k mark: stats.foldingathome.org/team/2…

Will we make it? Currently, we climb between about 2..4 steps a day, but see above. Any folders out there joining us?

CASTING CALL: After our special Halloween crossover episode with Bitter Karella's Hugo-nominated twitter microfiction "The Midnight Pals", she and I got talking... and I can now reveal that we are making a WHOLE NOTHER AUDIO SERIES, "Submitted For the Approval of the Midnight Pals", a comedy-horror anthology in which classic horror authors, living and dead, gather around the campfire to tell their strange and scary tales. We're looking for four male-range voices for the parts of Stephen (King), Dean (Koontz), Clive (Barker) and Edgar Allan Poe. This is an unpaid, for-fun project, at least for the first season.

(There'll be further casting calls, including roles for all genders, for the guest casts of individual episodes, which we'll get to once we've filled out the main cast.)

Audition, or see further details, here: castingcall.club/projects/midn… (Content note: NSFW language in audition lines, especially for Clive)

We'd love to hear you!

I have - intentionally - installed a whole mess of #Matrix clients on various devices, and quite pleased with their interoperability, especially in terms of end-to-end encryption.

  • Element web client in Firefox
  • Gomuks terminal-based client on Linux (works on my aarch64 Pinebook Pro)
  • Nheko GUI client on Linux
  • Element on Android
  • FluffyChat on Android

I have not much to add apart from the fact they… just work 👍 Just to clarify my testing criteria: I’m using these devices for daily work so have little tolerance for inconvenient user interfaces or crashing, but I have lots of tolerance for aesthetics, emojis etc.
