Bis Mittwoch wäre noch Zeit, die restlichen 656k und 4 Länder überm Schwellenwert (Belgien ist kurz davor, dann wären es noch 3) zusammenzubekommen... eci.ec.europa.eu/038/public/#/…

🤍 Appeal to the Browser Goddesses 🤍

Can we please make it a thing where 32GB of RAM isn't an insufficient amount for day to day web browser usage? Getting an OOM core dump for that reason is inexcusable.

- Should the Zoom browser app really need 2GB on a single tab when it's already downscaling a 1080p feed to 320p on an enterprise account?
- Should Amazon's website really need 1GB per tab just to view the cart or a ~800Mb for a single simple product page?
- Please remind me how an MKdocs fully static page with a single 400k image and no datatables or fancy JS somehow require 242Mb?
- Or perhaps shed some light on the requirement where Google's main page with a single search form somehow needs ~500Mb

There are no "good reasons" for these inefficiencies. We don't suddenly have better search fields or compressed jpegs now vs a decade ago with 1/10th of the system resources.

People who often participate in large email threads.

How do you quickly distinguish between "I need this urgently asap" addressed to you and "I need this urgently asap" addressed to somebody else, with you in CC as a courtesy or acknowledgment that the email you asked to send was actually sent?

I don't think I've seen an email client that lets you check this quickly.

I just converted a long ImageMagick command to an FFMpeg command on the fly without checking the docs. please clap.

@pup but now i’m trying to actually encode av1 video clips because i got distracted
in reply to Seirdy

@pup whenever i use ffmpeg for anything i end up fucking around with av1 for no reason. it always happens.

the thing is that i could be trusted with the book that kills people from the hit anime and manga series "you can't trust anyone with the book that kills people". because that manga has a protagonist specifically chosen to advance the themes of the story and end on a classic liberal theme of power being Bad no matter who uses it uwu. but me, im not a character in a story. im a real life person. and i would let marxism-leninism tell me who to kill. it would be my guiding light. my mortal science

Buenos días desde la Administración Pública.

This is a good one. Sounds like the “back” button in Safari which will display the history of visited website. Wow, so useful. I wonder when this was introduced? dragonscave.space/@scottrut/11…
in reply to victor tsaran

Yeah, it's been there for a while. I noticed it once when I paused before hitting the back button and heard the hint that a double tap and hold would bring up the history. Once in a great while I remember to listen for the hint to see if I can pick up something new.

I think VoiceOver does a good job with hints. For example, I like how when I'm using the braille screen input command mode.

Diwali is on Halloween this year. The festival of lights will be competing with the festival of the candy industry. :blueMoji_frustrated:

I always felt like Halloween worked as a themed month, but as a day why’d it have to be on Diwali. Ugh.

in reply to Seirdy

Sorry, I didn’t want to make a big general statement about Halloween. Please enjoy it if you like it. This was a more personal vent.

Things like this are inevitable when you shove the Hindu lunisolar calendar and the Gregorian calendar onto the same timeline.

It just occurred to me for no particular reason that there are people on the internet too young to remember the song The Internet Is For Porn and if you were to make a reference to it they would take your statement literally.
in reply to Dave Mac Farlane

I reached that when I could say "I was on the internet before you were born". And these people are 30 now.

#iphone menus tip. How many times have you been buried in levels of menus and wish there was a faster way of returning to the top level of a particular menu group. This can be done and I wanted to share this tip with everyone. Here is an example. If you go to Settings accessibility VoiceOver settings and choose speech and drill down in to the different voices, if you wish to get back to the very top level of settings, Double tap and hold on the back button and then you can flick to the right and go back to whichever level you desire. This is awesome if you’re four or five levels in and wish to return to the top level. I hope this is useful.

One of the themes which came through from the NVDA Satisfaction Survey earlier this year, was to improve Braille support. To help us target the most needed improvements, we have created a short survey. If you use NVDA with braille at least some of the time, please consider completing this survey.

Sam Altman believes #AI is using a trivial amount of energy.

"The energy use of AI, I think relative to the value it's creating, is quite tiny today. I don't want to minimize it too much, because it's going to go up — like we will use gigawatts over time, out of, you know, terawatts on Earth."

I guess this depends on if the energy use of small countries is trivial and if you believe Earth can sustain producing terawatts of energy indefinitely.

Journalists who continue to actively post on Musk's site are actively supporting the business of a man who a) hates honest journalism; b) amplifies and gives big money to a presidential candidate who hates them and will act on that if he's back in power; and c) wants to bring down democracy itself.

No rationalization at this point is legitimate.
