Hi everyone, we had a question on the weekend about the best programs, accessible with NVDA under Windows, for:

1. An accessible client to work with multiple calendars via CalDAV

2. A program which can work as a to-do-list.

The user would prefer not to use Outlook if possible. Has anyone got tips please?

A couple of days back I posted

"Stop creating international conferences that meet in the US.

This goes beyond conference policies. Some of your attendees will not be able to get into the US and some of those that do risk arrest."

Many people said that the current risk of arrest was low for people in "safe" categories. I sort of agreed but emphasized that the future risk wasn't. Well the future is already here.

What's the state of #matrix, #xmpp and #IRC as far as #screenReader -accessible clients are concerned? Desktop (Windows, Mac) and mobile (iOS, Android).

Hoping for some input, please feel free to boost. As far as I know:

Matrix does not have a lightweight, fully accessible client for desktop, but one could be modified, such as #gomuks. On mobile, Element has scrolling issues, which is unacceptable for large rooms.

XMPP has accessible desktop clients (I used to run #Adium on the Mac), also #WeeChat. No idea about mobile.

IRC is perhaps the one which everything supports on desktop, from #MirandaIM through Weechat to the old Freedom Chat, which I could probably rewrite if I had to. Also not sure about mobile, but it would definitely need push notifications, because we can't expect people to stay constantly online on the go. #a11y #accessibility

@Zvonimir Stanecic @André Polykanine @Erion I'm using elementX on android and for text chatting And voice messages I find it working well for me.
Onlinux desktop there is fractal. Which will hopefully becomes accessible enough on windows as well when GTK4 accessibility matures in one of the upcoming 4.18+ versions.
For XMPP the onlydecent and accessible client app is conversations on android.
Others are either not verry screen reader accessible or are lacking in features.

today, i have IP-blocked the entirety of alibaba cloud’s IPv4 range (47.80.0.0/13, 47.74.0.0/15, 47.76.0.0/14). And you could ask - domi, what the hell, that’s kinda sorta a lot of addresses?

fucking watch this: that’s sakamoto Mk5, my Ryzen 9 7950X3D server. Never before have I seen forgejo taking this much CPU.

They’ve generated 9GB of access logs (!) and 230GB of generated tarballs (!!!) before I got to my laptop, investigated and ip-banned them. I’m positive that most forgejo deployments in existence wouldn’t survive this.

If you needed another reason to fuck generative AI today - here’s one

I got fed up of posting the same comment every time the topic of LLM hallucinations in code comes up (short version: they don't matter because you'll spot them the second you try to run the code) - so I've turned that comment into a longer form blog post simonwillison.net/2025/Mar/2/h…

Every time someone launches an Android phone, they fork (copy-paste) the entire code-base for each and every device and Android version. Keeping it up to date is a lot of effort for the vendors, but don't worry - they only do so for a limited amount of time, so that you have to buy a new phone instead!

in reply to Jage

@Jage @matt the big problem with LLM tech is not even really the tech itself, it's this. If the LLM vendors were deeply concerned about their reputations and user experience of quality rather than a manic race to expand capabilities on artificial benchmarks and embed their products into absolutely everything so that they'd be hard to dislodge, there are probably LOTS of pretty easy fixes to mitigate the risks
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt @Jage Given the proliferation of locally-runnable models and the wide array of options for fine-tuning, there's a lot that you could (hypothetically) do either on top of a hosted API or independently, but the fundamental problem here is a structural one with the market and nothing to do with the tech. You are going to be competing with actors strongly incentivized to externalize their costs with hundreds of billions of dollars in funding to outspend you

I caught up on the meeting between Trump and Zelensky, and I think it's one of the most disturbing and humiliating moments I've ever seen in foreign diplomacy.

As SNL pointed out, it was a trap. I recommend watching last night's sketch about it. It's incredibly difficult to parody such an existential meeting for Ukraine, but they did a great job highlighting the real purpose behind it.

Anxiety Mounts Among Social Security Recipients as DOGE Troops Settle In

Elon Musk’s team has descended on an already understaffed Social Security Administration, which now faces further workforce cuts and closures of vital local offices. The consequences could be significant for millions of the most vulnerable Americans.

at 1:40-, it's easy to see when the interpreter fingerspells sub. Marcos but I'm not able to parse which sign she's using for "zapatismo" immediately after. it doesn't help that the dang video keeps cutting away the interpreter lol

I'm doing too much doom scrolling I have a lot of important things to do... However, @KFosterMarks showed me this really cool research paper, so I decided that I'm going to live-post me reading it in real time as a distraction from the $EVERYTHING right now.

(Well, I live-posted it on bluesky; I'm copying that over here)

Btw, you should follow her! She's awesome.

Now, for the paper!

Title: Predictors and consequences of intellectual humility
DOI: doi.org/10.1038/s44159-022-000…

The authors: Porter, T, Elnakouri, A., Meyers, E. A., Shibayama, T., Jayawickreme, E. & Grossmann, I

(Naturally, papers often aren't free-as-in-democracy™, so I searched the internet for a pre-print)

... As an aside, y'know what I'd love? A way to spit a DOI into something and get all the pre-prints, news articles about it, learn about what else the authors have done, etc.

And importantly! The social media handles of authors! I wanna thank them and it's *so* hard to find authors outside of academia

So normally if I wanted to really dig into and study a paper, I'd load it into an e-reader and take notes. Unfortunately, that's super cumbersome and the notes don't sync on anything on my computer and so... blah.

(This is not an ask for advice: I just don't have the bandwidth to improve that rn)
But for now, the computer works, and I use Todoist for my todo app and, weirdly, as my most global notes app for future writing / thinking directions. It works, so eh

But I got a sublime.app subscription cause I like what they do and their philosophical approach. So I'm gonna try that one out today

I'm glad to see the glow effect.

In Draw, I can add glow to a text box without converting to a metafile, but shapes will not show the glow unless converted. This is different from the website documentation.

To access in the Sidebar, it should read Sidebar>Properties>*Text Effects* (Text effects is not listed in the documentation.)

I'm impressed and will use this later today. It will be great to help text stand out against certain backgrounds.

Something's seriously busted with the macros. I submitted a ticket but am fearing that it might not get noticed. I don't know how your system works for that. Anyway, here's the ticket number. I need the answer to this fairly soon or I'll be forced to pay through the nose for MS Access, which I don't want to have to do. I'd rather just get the problem with running or assigning macros to buttons in Base forms fixed.

Update: I wound up possibly solving my own problem, though the solution is wonky and involves using Version 6 instead of Version 25.x (I forget the number).

Here's my comment about that on the bug report:

I'm thinking German tourists are not really going to want to visit the US, with ICE and the tendency of our National Parks of killing them on vacation.

I guess one way to stop illegal immigration is to make the US such a dangerous and unhealthy place to be, no one wants to visit or live here. Make America healthy again--get vaccinated.
