- don't know about 25.8, as I'm having no success with installing 25.2.3 (Intel) on my 2017 MacBook Air running Monterey. Just keep getting the window saying it can't install. Even tried Silicon version with (obviously) same result. Tried other mirrors. Same result. Argh. An experiment - downloaded Silicon version onto my M2 Mini and install process opened without issue. Thoughts?
@bazcook So you're definitely downloading the Intel version from the website? (As Apple Silicon is the default CPU choice – there's no way to auto-detect.) Can you post a screenshot of the message you receive when you try to install the Intel version on your 2017 Air?

- nope. LibreOffice gets to be the first! All app downloads have always been sent to Downloads folder before installation. Started installation from there. And before you ask - tried saving it to Desktop and then installing from there. Same issue. Again, downloading Silicon version onto my M2 Mini (into Download Folder) and it activated the install without issue. Same browser (Firefox) and all other internet / Wi-Fi settings, too.

- okay, so take your pick. Downloaded from a country-specific mirror, using a different browser - this time Safari. It installed without issue. Blame the source? Blame Firefox? But again, I downloaded the Silicon version from default location on my M2 using Firefox and it had no issues. Something is funky *somewhere*, but at least I was able to get it to work.

In XMPP public rooms we definitely had a very motivated hater spamming gore images (and worse) everywhere they could. The point was precisely to make everyone run away.
The way this crap is moderated on big platforms may be more effective, but at what cost? ("facebook moderation ptsd" on your favorite search engine, but I bet you know the story already)
You don't need to be an apologist for them. I used to be a content moderator. I know how hard it is. But Matrix outsourcing the problem to users is not the solution. And, frankly, that sort of spam should be automatically detected without human intervention.
It isn't up to the customers of a bar to chuck out unruly patrons.
I am not an apologist of Matrix in general, but content moderation in decentralised services run by volunteers is a very hard problem. Automated content inspection is near impossible with E2EE and in general frowned upon by privacy advocates (for good reasons).
to be precise, we said: you are very welcome to publicise our flaws: “Matrix needs way better antispam and moderation controls; I’m not going to use it any more” or whatever. but please do *not* repost abusive spam, spreading it even further, which does nothing other than [give the spammer the attention they want].
Meanwhile, we are working hard on anti-invitespam measures - and we apologise to those hit by the spammer.
Look, we all get it. Matrix is up against some tough competition and your core product is free and open source. One thing that could go a long ways is including an auto moderator bot for the free groups hosted on matrix.org. Or building in some more controls into the app for group admin and moderator teams.
Seeing posts like this, I simply had disabled invites on my server before it could spread to me, so I've not seen anything.
I'll keep the server for now, while migrating everything to ejabberd. It's got WIP Matrix support, so if I really have to, I'll be able to join a Matrix room, but everything else will be XMPP. There IDs can be hidden in a chat, making the spread of spam much more difficult, just because IDs cannot be scraped as easily.
I deeply regret having brought more than 3k users to Matrix.
This has just hindered us from adopting something better that works well. I also wanted to love Matrix and advertised it for a couple years, always thinking "Yeah, it's new, it will get better", but the issues have always stayed.
The people behind Matrix are nice and I wish them the best. Should the issue get solved in the future: I'll gladly try adopting it again. :)

@erebion this is *very* helpful - thanks. it's interesting that performance sounds to be the root problem here. Synapse is certainly not that efficient, but it really shouldn't be that bad, and UTDs really should be dead as of 2024. Fractal hasn't enabled sliding sync yet, which explains why launch is slow, but Element X (for instance) should be instant, not slower than Fractal.
But also feel like feedback is often just ignored, unfortunately. Hope the community interactions will improve, love the ejabberd community as a positive example.
My issues are mostly not even the spam (I just disabled invites), but mostly sloooow performance. Otherwise I'm fine with it all.
Sometimes Fractal neeeds 30 minutes to sync up when opening, it's written in Rust and should be fast enough.

…let’s rephrase this. If you are using Meta’s products (WhatsApp included) your data *is* going into the AI woodchipper. Full stop. Don’t think otherwise. Opting out/in is just appeasing politicians. At least 3 reasons for this; it is extraordinarily difficult to prove your data is in there or remove it once digested, the US isn’t going to prosecute them, and they can pay (or delay/etc) any EU fines/prosecution.
“Opt out” is exactly as effective as “Do not track”. That’s it.

JAWS for Windows is greedy. The last time I went looking at the home annual license, it was $95/year in the US and Canada. For everything you get, that's a pretty compelling price. Most Americans can probably afford $95/year for a screen reader. Now, it's $674/year. That's seven times more expensive for new customers, and an awful lot of money to charge individuals for a license that specifically cannot be used professionally. The one-time payment is $1548, which includes two additional yearly upgrades. I don't know how much upgrades cost after the SMA is over, but I'm sure it isn't $674 for every major version. So the yearly subscription isn't just hilariously expensive now; it's a waste of money. It effectively has no logical reason for existing, and if one of you unfortunate souls actually wants to pay for JAWS after this, you'd be better off paying the full price and then upgrading when possible. I can't begin to understand how anyone justified such a massive price increase. EDIT: I was quickly informed there is still a home annual license available for $104.50. However, it's not advertised and you have to call them in order to find out it exists. This is basically what Aira did a couple of years ago, but worse. This post is not misinformation; it's accurate information based on what they list on their site. They didn't want businesses buying home licenses, so instead of dealing with the problem, they passed it onto their users. store.freedomscientific.com/pr…

There was a case a few years back where some major Youtube channel was showing how Github worked and used I think it was the Node repo in there example so that repo got flooded with PRs, I could easily see the same happen again let alone someone doing so to ruin a project.

Slop PRs haven't been a big issue yet on my repo. What I've had has come from automated third party accounts that I could easily block. But now the call is coming from inside the house!
Was greeted with Copilot using vscode today despite having turned it off multiple times. Finally bit the bullet and migrated my stuff to vscodium and will be working on moving my repos to codeberg. I have 0 trust in anything Microsoft at this point
I am using GitHub only as a mirror and to work on projects I forked to keep them alive. Everything else moved to GitLab right after M$ bought GitHub because I never trusted them. And got proved right. Will move the forks away and will probably also remove repos from GitHub.
So I think it's just a matter of not enabling it. Also, someone must explicitly request it to do something and it goes through a PR approval process as usual, following branch rules etc.
That said, I don't think I'd enable it myself. Copilot already makes a big mess with relatively simple tasks. Automating mess doesn't feel right to me.

Just as soon as I do a bit of troubleshooting; I seem to have broken "sudo shutdown -h now" on this Debian machine. It says: "sudo: The term 'sudo' is not recognized as a name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or executable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again."
Umm... the bit about "not recognized as a name of a cmdlet" is something that Microsoft Powershell would say. And AFAIK Powershell is not installed on Debian by default. Did you? Or was it that late in the evening that you were talking to a (local) Windows machine instead of a Debian one?
@tynstar It was 45 minutes after midnight, and I'd been up since 6 AM. I also have powershell and oh-my-posh installed on all of my machines, so that doesn't help me.
