It's really sad to see that a reliable company is just riding their fame. #Izotope just released RX 11, with hardly any changes to existing, and quite frankly outdated features. All that while smaller companies, such as Acon Digital, Accentize, Hush Pro, Supertone, Zynaptiq, etc, are innovating. their best features? A codec and loudness preview for streamed #audio, and a loudness maximizer. Both should be a part of Ozone, rather than an audio repair suite.

The so called state of the art, and newest neural models, that Izotope claims on their RX page are for example nowhere near close to SpectralLayers's.

Credit where credit's due, their dialog reverb is a huge improvement over their existing dereverb module. But if this is all they could do in two years, they will be out of business as soon as people notice that there are tools that cost 5 times less and do miles better and they trust a new brand.

My advice, for what it's worth, there are better tools out there that do significantly better. RX still remains a blast of the past.

I learnt something important about Linux audio last night.

I noticed that I had no sound in X-Plane 12 (a flight simulator) while also being in a Discord call in Firefox. Apparently, certain FMOD applications check if PulseAudio is installed and fall back to ALSA if it isn't. Now, I have PipeWire installed to fix the mess that is Linux audio once and for all. So TECHNICALLY PulseAudio is not installed. And that's exactly what X-Plane detected, which then tried to gain complete control over the sound hardware through ALSA, which it couldn't.

The "fix" was to symlink `/bin/pulseaudio` to `/bin/true` to make it look like PulseAudio is available which tricked X-Plane into going through PulseAudio (and therefore through PipeWire) instead.

That was one of the weirdest problems I've ever encountered.

Fun random fact: the sample rate of Audio CD format is 44100Hz. The Nyquist frequency for audible sound is roughly double the upper limit of human hearing, which is 20kHz.

So why is the CDDA sample rate more than 40kHz, but only a little bit more?

The prime factorization of 44100 is 2^2•3^2•5^2•7^2, which gives a LOT of options for computationally cheap downsampling and playback speed reduction. 😁

Well this is nice -- using my stock @fedora desktop, I start up Guitarix and Carla, and start noodling like a noob on my guitar without thinking too much about setting things up, because @pipewire is excellent.

There's ways to go for this to be a *good* user experience, but it's still miles ahead of having to manually poke and prod to get some basics started, and some of the Guitarix fx sure are fun :)
