Wow, do you really need two fighter jets to attack the balloon? Impressive! ? nytimes.com/live/2023/02/04/us…

My good friend @stasp has just released his first song on streaming services, and it's banging! Gice it a listen:
YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=EN9-wDhzrN…
Spotify: open.spotify.com/track/2NxgbIm…
Apple Music: music.apple.com/us/album/i-do-…
It's on most of the others too, so go search for "Mudb0y - I Do Care About You" wherever you stream your music!

Did you know that American police officers receive the fewest hours of training in the developed world? Are you aware that their training emphasizes violence much more than police training in other countries? Did you know that Americans are vastly more likely to die in the hands of police than citizens in any other democratic country--no matter what their race?

Those are just a few of the things I discovered researching this article. #tyrenichols

There's an interesting new paper in the journal Ecological Economics. The title is:

"Assessing US consumers' carbon footprints reveals outsized impact of top 1%"
sciencedirect.com/science/arti…

This is from the abstract --

Unsustainable environmental degradation and extreme economic inequality are two of humanity's most pressing challenges. They are intimately linked. Climate-altering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are disproportionately driven by consumption among wealthy and socially privileged groups, yet poorer and socially marginalized peoples face disproportionate climate harms.

What really grabbed me, however, was the chart below, created by Andrew Fanning using data contained in the paper. It clearly illustrates the massive scale of carbon inequality in our modern society.

Was completely unaware of "Clascal" ("an object-oriented dialect of Pascal designed by Apple with Niklaus Wirth") and the Lisa Application ToolKit (a "forerunner of most modern frameworks, including MacApp and the NeXT frameworks"). Incredible how much of this kind of software engineering genealogy is forgotten today.

Thanks for the history lesson, @eschaton! eschatologist.net/blog/?p=314

Just came across a few-day-old blog post (daringfireball.net/2023/01/mea…) which says that third-party Android apps, particularly Mastodon clients, "don’t even try to achieve the look-and-feel comfort, fun, and panache of iOS apps." And it occurred to me that the kind of polish that he praises in iOS and misses in Android is probably entirely missing from the experience of blind users across platforms, not least because we mostly use GUIs indirectly via a bolted-on screen reader. (to be continued)
in reply to Matt Campbell

To be clear, it's great that mainstream apps, content, and services are accessible; I wouldn't dream of suggesting that we should exclusively use UIs designed specifically for us. But I wonder what "look-and-feel comfort, fun, and panache" would mean in a Ui designed specifically for blind people. What immediately comes to mind is gimmicky stuff like pre-recorded prompts and lots of sound effects, that would just get annoying in everyday use.
in reply to Matt Campbell

Look at Elten (on Windows) to see what is possible in terms of blindness-first UI. The app never really became popular outside the Polish community, but an English version does exist. To give you just a few examples, it has stereo sounds for scrollbars, which are extremely useful once you get used to them, audio icons for file types and statuses like “unread” or “blocked”, a clock sound, which is an audio version of a loading spinner, and quiet ambiences for menus and modals.

Also replacing most messages with audio queues, so E.G. instead of saying “new message from foo”, it just plays the new message sound and says foo. It also does Teamtalk-Style channels, except with HRTF and moving around, so you can actually have multiple groups of people taking about different things, and you can move around and come up to the people that seem interesting.
