I attended today's presentation where Deane Blazie introduced the new BTSpeak. Much of what he discussed can also be found on the Blazie Technologies Web site which was mentioned toward the end of the presentation. blazietech.com/
Here are my notes that I took which have hardly been edited.

Deane said nobody had done an equivalent Bns. Deand and Bryan (one of his sons) were working with Raspberry PI with a Braille keyboard to make a new 21st century Bns.
Based on Raspberry PI, inside is a computer module 4, has 4 cores, equivalent to a low end or possibly midrange laptop.
About the size of an iPhone Pro
8-key Braille keyboard.
Also has music and media player can stream from Pandora
Has learning application for learning how to type on a Braille keyboard
Comes with Lynx Web browser
Runs on Linux
Builtin calculator, clock and calendar
Hdmi port for monitor
Usb c for charging or plugging in keyboards, usb stick for storage
Micro Sd card slot
He was not sure of max capacity but 256 gb is possible
Has wifi
Has small CHATGpt app but you need a token
Uses Dectalk and ESpeak
Dectalk is from Human Voice LLC which is allowing them to use it for free
Has capability to do voice commands.
Deane said “weather” to get a weather forecast.
Has a around half dozen commands.
Has dictionary.
BTRadio is a Pandora app.
Has a Bible
Morse code application
From systems menu there is an audio menu for speech synthesizer selection
From any menu or application you can get context specific help for that program
Product will have two versions: basic and a Pro version.
Pro will have desktop Linux using Orca.
Uses RPI version of Debian
Pro version will have LibreOffice.
Has a PDF reader.
Standard unit supports text and Braille files, need Pro for full Office support.
Will we have NLS support: we don’t have NLS working with it. Not sure about Newsline.
Has Bluetooth but no headphone jack but it will have an adapter for the USB port for a headphone jack
1.5 ghz
Cost 795 for basic
Pro costs 1195
Web site: blazietech.com
Units are still being developed but can’t be released until software is more refined.
Shipping in February
BTSpeak architecture cannot run Eloquence
Eloquence Was written for intel-based and older versions of Arm but not arm64
Has text editor in basic unit but can use LibreOffice in Pro unit
For editor it can do Braille translation just like bns did
Has 4 gb of ram and 32 gb of rom

Chrome works on the Pro version only

Známka technické a emisní kontroly

According to the article that I read, the malware exploits weak ssh passwords. One generally shouldn't be using password authentication in ssh, and definitely not insecure passwords - that's exactly how to compromise a high-quality security tool by administrative malpractice.
I always turn off password authentication and require public key authentication or Kerberos. On my server, ssh is available only via a Wireguard tunnel anyway.

I needed to test support for dynamic accessible descriptions recently, so I made a blog post reference in case it's helpful for others.

Who knew Milton Babbitt's "Semi-Simple Variations" could be so funky? True, he played jazz sax in dance bands as a youth. But he's mainly known for his ultra-mathematical compositions - sort of like Schoenberg squared. Indeed, he worked in the math department at Princeton before they let him teach music!

Adding bass and drums helps. Three dancers... well, that's a bit over the top.

Today at apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid not just some #AndroidAppRain with 11 updated apps, but also some "evaporation": 12 apps have been removed as they used expired debug keys, more will follow them the next days. Some background on this can be found at gitlab.com/IzzyOnDroid/repo/-/…

For some more background: I'm currently implementing additional checks for better app security, see gitlab.com/IzzyOnDroid/repo/-/… – once done and working, details will follow with a blog article.

This post makes the valuable point that community donations are not always helpful/welcome, or directed to the right place. Lots of people have positive intentions to help out by throwing money in a pot, and it's a balancing act to be grateful for that willingness while acknowledging that you don't need or want the funds, or that receiving them would complicate your financial situation in some way: meta.chaos.social/2024/01/10/r…
in reply to James Scholes

this is also why, in an ideal world, I would make just enough to just about cover the instance, and not more. Luckily this is not a problem, we're not even close, but if it was, I would turn off donations as soon as that goal was reached. Receiving profit always comes with complications and overhead, no matter whether it's donations or not, and simply running the instance is already quite enough. I would rather operate at a loss for as long as I can than deal with that, to be honest. I want this space to exist, and since I'm in the fortunate position of being able to share, I'm happy to do that. But I don't want it to become a job, not even part time. Don't want to lose whatever this is by risking any of that. So yeah, definitely resonate with the blog post to some degree.
in reply to Talon

@talon I don't run an instance, but I would be greatful if I made money from something that isn't supposed to make money.
However if that were the case, still responsibility would have to be taken to not waste the money or drop the quality of my running the instance.
I would do my best to classify any extra as a freebie or whatnot. But that's just what I'm saying, the hardest part would be turning those words into action.
in reply to Kevan

@kev Making money means overhead. Which means you usually end up spending money to manage the money. Or you spend time. Don’t want any of that. The more money you make the more money you lose to things like taxes as well. Don’t want that either. If you care about the instance you can help me run it, and then give the money that would otherwise sit here or be lost to more taxes to someone who needs it more. This is wholly non profit. We are here because we want to be here and that’s pretty much it.
in reply to Kevan

@kev Responsibly spending the money is a factor, for sure. But people often discard things like a person's tax position. If my income went over a certain point, my tax rate would be multiplied by more than ten over night, and my net income would actually be decreased by over 25%. By receiving more money, I would earn a lot less. That's not a risk I'd be willing to take on income I wasn't spending or didn't need. It's much easier for people who are unemployed, or independently wealthy, to treat any increase in income as a good or insignificant thing. @talon
in reply to James Scholes

@kev Many factors. But a big one for me is just giving back as well. Providing the instance for people to use feels like a kind of donation from me as well. It just feels good to provide some kind of social media home for people who would like one but can’t or don’t want to manage their own. All of the admins and mods helping also directly came from the instance as well. So it’s a whole mix of things for me personally. @jscholes you for example helped out in a very significant way as well and I’m grateful.

The W3C publishing ethical web principles is like OPEC publishing ethical climate principles.

Who are the members of the W3C?

Google,
Facebook (Meta),
Amazon,
Adobe,
SoftBank,
Yahoo!,

The W3C is the standards body of surveillance capitalism.

Ethical principles? W3C? Don’t make me laugh!

If they had any ethics they’d have expelled their most prominent members starting with Google and Facebook.

But, hey, I might be wrong and the #W3C now fully believes in its new ethical web principles. In which case, they will no doubt take action and expel members that only exist because their business model relies on violating them.

#Google is fundamentally incompatible with the W3C’s ethical web principles and should be expelled from the W3C as it relies on violating section 2.5 (The web must…respect people’s privacy).

Also, §2.2 (The web should not cause harm to society).

Ditto #Facebook, etc.

Mitmachen. 👇
