Does anyone know of an OA thermodynamics book that would be suitable for a one-semester, early undergrad course on the subject? Something comparable in scope/level to, e.g., Finn's Thermal Physics: thermodynamic potentials, magnetic work, at least some calculation of microcanonical and canonical probabilities, etc.

This textbook seems OK for what it does cover, but it doesn't go far enough:

openstax.org/details/books/uni…

And David Tong's lecture notes presume that the students have already had the kind of class I'm thinking about:

damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/tong/stat…

What is there in the middle?

... Another "does this book exist" question: Is there an OA textbook suitable for a one-semester course on special relativity? Again, OpenStax provides an example that seems fine as far as it goes but that only goes partway:

openstax.org/details/books/uni…

What covers Minkowski spacetime, the energy-momentum relation, maybe a little about how "force" works in SR... Is there an open-access equivalent to Anthony French's text from back in the day when I was young?

#AndroidAppRain at apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid today with 7 updated and 1 added apps:

@fipamo is close to hitting a significant milestone as its conversion to #Laravel is almost complete. Once this conversion is done, the new foundation will be set for enhancements like RSS and better accessibility, and then federation will be implemented.

Development on @thebadspace has been paused while changes to #Fipamo are being made, but several upgrades in reserve are about to be released.

Development for both projects is ongoing. They are completely funded by the community, and there are a couple of ways to support them.

To subscribe to insider info and details of both projects, use patreon.com/sayhitohi

To make a one-time contribution to the project that goes to sustaining development for the year, use gofundme.com/f/a-new-way-to-so…

Both projects will always be open source, and every cent will go to sustaining long-term development and maintenance.

Let's work together to make the web fun and weird again.

Howdy! New to this whole Mastodon thing (I'm not even sure what instance I should be on) but eager. Name's Bug — I'm a queer master's student in an entomology lab, passionate about scientific outreach.

When I’m not staring at insects, I spend my time creating zines, comics, other art, and playing D&D. I want to learn how to make video games. Let’s connect if you think little critters are cool!

Because offline updates prevent leaving opened libraries, plugins, and files around; if a file is opened by any process, the update will still succeed, but the new file won't be used. You'd have to close and restart both those browsers, first, but GNOME Software doesn't know if a package is related to a running application or not.

There's a good explanation here: fedoramagazine.org/offline-upd…

TIL, Jumbo the elephant was not named such because of his size. Instead, Jumbo the word, meaning exceptionally large, was only introduced into the english language because of Jumbo the elephant. He was so big and so well known that his name became synonymous with size.

It's 2024 and #Google is now requiring bulk #email senders to use DMARC, SPF, & DKIM when emailing #Gmail users. 👍

This is a great step, BUT why did they allow bulk senders to send #spam emails without proper #security standards until now? 🤔

As a financial supporter of Mastodon¹ this pains me, but the new rule @Gargron announced yesterday is a bad rule.² It's too vague, & vague rules invite abuse. Forget figuring out how one is supposed to cite a meme's source, what is meant by "the use of AI must be disclosed?" Predictive text on your phone is a language model (small not large). It's AI, grammar check too. Ugh!

² mastodon.social/@Gargron/11211… (screen shot of rule embedded)

in reply to David Colarusso

more context, I'm a dyslexic attorney who knows full well I could not have been a part of this profession before the age of spellcheck and text to speech. You may think these don't count as AI, but the rule doesn't make that clear, and tts is classic AI. If I have my computer read to me while I write, do I have to disclose that? The rule seems to say yes. What if I use grammar check? What if I use an LLM as a sounding board? See e.g., mastodon.social/@Colarusso/112…

The rule is too vague.

We’re seeking input from #FOSS maintainers as we design a fellowship program pilot. We want to test a support mechanism that addresses structural issues in the FOSS ecosystem, and support maintainers who work on open digital infrastructure in the public interest.

If you maintain open source projects, we would be very grateful if you could take ten minutes to respond to the survey:
survey.sovereigntechfund.de/96…

Please also repost and share with FOSS maintainers you know. Thanks!

I finalized my epaper calendar! 🤩
Calendar events are pulled from @homeassistant the device itself is running @esphome. It automatically shows as many entries as can be fitted on the screen, same day entries get grouped together.

Optionally a random quote can be displayed on the bottom or alternatively the next event of the day. The device is battery powered and uses deep sleep to extend the battery life.

If you want to build your own: github.com/paviro/ESPHome-ePap…

I am super grateful for boosts!

Alt Text, ente descoñecido no Fediverso Galego

#AltText
