As someone very familiar with government IT (but not with DOE specifically), my hypothesis is that their developers have to create a record of every piece of software they use. And the system where they enter those records requires a vendor contact email address. And someone, lacking a better email address in their rush to fill out the form, found your email address and used it, not understanding the implications.

@matrix I know you worked on encryption and key exchange in the latest iterations, but you made it worse.

That is freaking not usable. A new contact added by ID in 1to1 chat, "Never send encrypted messages to unverified sessions.." not activated. Just a brand new contact.

Not working at all. Trying to get users to #Matrix like that won't work.

It's not only old-style looking, heavy and non-intuitive, it's just not working at all.

(matrix(dot)org homeserver btw!)

in reply to Tobi

We're sorry to see that, and appreciate you reaching out! We agree the user experience around E2EE needs to be improved and presents a barrier to adoption.

It is our understanding that the client and server developers recognize the issue and are working on it.

in reply to The Matrix.org Foundation

as written below, E2E encryption works in a room with the two participants, yet not in a 1:1 chat. Selecting "room" resolves the issue. Yet that's not a thing to make a first user understand or making her/him trying per se.

We announced that we are sunsetting unauthenticated media access on matrix.org just 2 months ago, and already 60% of requests are now using the new authenticated endpoints! We’re grateful to and proud of the ecosystem for moving so quickly 🚀

We’re on track to hit nearly 100% by August 28th, but some fixes and releases will be landing awfully close to that deadline – so we’re moving the deadline back one week to September 4th.

The recording for my talk from Berlin Mini GUADEC about the GNOME STF project is now online! Probably the talk with the least preparation and sleep I've ever given, but hopefully interesting nevertheless.

I'm very sad that @sonny was not allowed to give the talk with me as planned. He is the heart and soul of the STF project, and none of this would have been possible without him.

in reply to lebout2canap ⏚

@lebout2canap The async annotations are a new marker for GObject-Introspection, like the ones we have for memory ownership.

This allows bindings like JavaScript and Python (and maybe Rust) to automatically map `foo()`/`foo_finish()` methods to their native async/await syntax.

The real magic of this is that I'm not even signed into Youtube. That's the part that really locks in the flavor.

With apologies to those who come at me every few months to complain that some of my toots have #hashtags within the contents instead of "after the contents", this is an argument that can never be won, as I illustrate below.

I'd rather see screen reader applications (or a11y-aware #Mastodon clients) automatically solve the problem by removing the hashtag and/or colors for those who don't want them. Otherwise, you're petitioning each individual instead of fixing the tools. Ya heard me, #MastoDev

in reply to Jeff Fortin T.

Oh no!

I heard you were supposed to in-line hashtags for screen readers.

They're better after for AT devices?

Существует ByeDPI (github.com/hufrea/byedpi), который работает как прокси (Windows/Linux).

(github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/issue…)

Outreachy is getting squeezed financially from reduced funding related to diversity programs and reduced funding for open source orgs. Can you help us spread the word about how important the program is and help us connect to folks who might contribute funding?

A quick OptiSpeech update.
I started a training run last Friday in an Azure VM donated by a friend from India.
I implemented pitch control, which is analogous to inflection setting found in other TTS systems.
A demo website is coming soon that allows you to try the model with your own text.

WARNING THE MODEL IS STILL IN EARLY TRAINING. Only 190K steps, target is 1M steps.

Yesterday I released version 0.8.0 of the rubbl_casatables Rust crate. If you've ever wanted to work with low-level CASA data using a compiled language that doesn't make you hate yourself, take a look! The blog post talks a bit more about container formats in general and why C++ makes me sad.

I have been working on getting Toby Doom using TTS in Windows. Using Powershell, and it is actually coming along quite nicely. Powershell has some nifty features. It's not bash, but not too bad nonetheless. To follow progress, there is this topic on the audiogames.net forum.

Push for CalDAV and CardDAV is getting real 😃 We're opening a new chapter of high-speed syncing for the whole open WebDAV/CalDAV/CardDAV ecosystem.

If you want to be the first of the first trying it out yourself you shouldn't miss @nextcloud Conference (Sept. 14 + 15 in Berlin) this year where we'll be revealing this to a broader audience for the very first time!

Here's a teaser of what's coming :)

For more details have a look at our (still ongoing) work here: github.com/bitfireAT/webdav-pu…

in reply to DAVx⁵ 🔄

We needed to integrate a NextCloud server lately. Could you point me to some documents, what the benefits are? We implemented also document management systems based on 'traditional' HTTPS methods or SFTP and I think I miss some of the benefits WebDav provides? It took us more time to understand these methods and if the port is not an issue, SFTP is also quite straight forward? Don't get me wrong - I am sure you know what you do, I just want to understand it 😅
in reply to Demiurg

@demiurg You'll get a quick overview if you read the "Motivation" section in the link of the posting :)
in reply to DAVx⁵ 🔄

Thank you, I have read this part. Still, I struggle to understand it. We did apps for DMS, which could do all CRUD actions based on JSON and standard HTTPS methods.
The benefit of a protocol is to not have the dependency on a specific implementation of a vendor? So, any WebDav supporting server could be used by the same client implementation, right? Sorry, if I ask stupid questions.

A massive thanks to @davetaylor2112 for alerting me to the UK train ifo app for iOS, 'Nearly Departed.'
Why I didn't know about this or use it sooner is beyond me. It was invaluable yesterday. They also explicitly mention #VoiceOver on the main page, so props to them for that.

'Accessible
The app has been extensively tested with iOS accessibility features, such as VoiceOver and Dynamic Type.'

If you take a lot of national rail trains in the UK and use iOS, you need this app too.

I've seen a few people talking the new "Zen" browser, which is based off of Firefox instead of being yet another Chromium variant.

So I checked out their website[1]... the first big image shows a collection of browser windows. One is being used to browse birdsite, while the other is on GitHub's home page with a tagline "The world's leading AI-powered developer platform".

Their header has a "Useful Links" section which points to

1. Their privacy policy
2. Their **discord**

Then I looked at their privacy policy and apparently if you want to contact the dev team your options are:

1. again, their discord
2. github

Folks, I'm just gonna go ahead and say you should skip this one.

New story: macOS Sequoia's new screen recording permissions prompt will now appear on a monthly basis instead of weekly. The requirement to re-approve after a reboot has also been removed.
