I switched from FireFox to LibreWolf and I've been recommending it to friends. It's a custom fork of FireFox, but with the most important privacy and security settings already built-in / enabled. It's got uBlockOrigin already installed and by default uses a privacy-focused search engine.
I think this kind of setup makes for a better browser experience, as it immediately protects the user while still giving the user the option to disable things to better tailor to their security and privacy posture. Other browsers tend to do this the other way around.
It's probably wise to note here some caution before using LibreWolf as one's default browser. Some sites don't function well with the "Enhanced Tracking Protection" (ETP) feature enabled for them. Issues surrounding this may appear as login pages that don't load or timestamps on webpages that are in UTC instead of your local timezone. This has only appeared on a handful of websites, but they do tend to be popular sites. Generally a quick-fix is to just add the site to the exception list for ETP, but a safer but more time-intensive way might be to try to figure out whether the data the site needs can be spoofed or specifically allowed instead.
I was curious if you checked out Vivaldi at all? I"ve been using it for a while on both windows and linux. It has a bit of a learning curve, but it seems secure. There are some bits that are not open source, but other then FireFox, most privacy browsers have a bit of hidden code. I'd value your input on this.
android's dominance may not be declining. and recent events suggest, google is locking android further. basically closing pixel's hardware related code.
I actually appreciate Google's services, especially YouTube and Google Docs, and I have a Pixel phone. But the search has become shallow, lazy and over-commodified, and Chrome has lost whatever luster it once had, by pushing AI too hard among other trends towards enshittification. But they kissed the least of DJT's ass of all the major tech corporations (though they did kiss some). Really, it's independent media on YouTube that keeps me on team Google.
#VivaldiBrowser Has a good #privacypolicy, is #European, and is 95% #FOSS. It removes the #googlecrap from the #Chromium code before using it in their #browser Also, it lets adding blocking sources and tweaking them, which is a must-have since their ad blocking is no the greatest, THB.
It has an overall good balance between privacy and functionality, and this is why I believe it should be added in the list.
Correct me if i am wrong. I think those stats only count search APIs. So DuckDuckGo, for example, that uses both Google and Bing would count as Google and Bing searches. That's the case for many of those alternatives, cos they don't have the resources to make their own real search engine. Apparently Qwant and Ecosia are working on a new search API, so that's great news.
I've been using #DuckDuckGo for the past decade, only relying on Google during work related situations. Recently found #Ecosia as well. A pretty good 1-2 punch.
@Tutanota, for me the best is Vivaldi as main Browser, apart of the most feature rich one out there by far, it has a great company ethic respect the user, good privacy and a great helpfull community, and it is an Browser from the EU which is on eye level to the US browsers.
I think in the current situation it is very recommended to promote EU products and services to gain sovereignity against the US hegemony, and same as using Tuta or Proton, also in browsers it gains importance.
Sadly, apart of Vivaldi, there are only two other Browsers from the EU, Mullvad, very private but somewhat basic in other features and Konqueror by KDE which is for Linux only.

#AudioMo Day 16: In December of 2013 I visited #Estonia to go and visit @jakobrosin for the first time. I decided to record as much of the plane-flight from the baggage hold as I could manage, so I set my Olympus LS-100 going, attached some mics to the suitcase straps internally and sent it on it's way. Here, we have 9 minutes of what I like to call 'Ethereal Suitcase Music' as it wends it's merry way from baggage check-in to the plane. Listen for the really strange and as yet unidentified noises the recorder captured at points along it's journey. If you have any ideas what these might be, I'd be very curious. I've been waiting for over 11 years to find out.
The various frequencies of the various motors or whatever are just wild. A couple of times, I genuinely wondered whether you'd mixed in some eerie new-age music just to screw with us, haha.
So, this time, i caught NVDA crashing, the same way it did yesterday, and it played an eror sound. I was curious to see if it would do it again, and right be for i hit record, it did. That time, it had no problem recovering, but i decided to leave Vertual Recorder open, to see if i can capture erors. I was in the interface of my Mastodon clyant, TWBlue browsing threw my home timeline as i usually do. About three minutes in, i heard an eror sound, and it stoped speaking intirely! It took me time to get Narrator up, so i can at least restart NVDA threw Task Manager. @NVAccess, hears what happened on my end. And guies, please don't take this as an attack, i just want this issue to be fixed. Thank you, for trying to help me yesterday, and i hope this can help bring foard a solution. Aside from this, i really do like NVDA's new features, and i support the project.
an audio recording is not of much use for debugging. You really want to send someone your NVDA Log to see what's going on. :) If you know where a crash is going to happen you can press NVDA+control+shift+f1 to mark the start of the log to capture, then press it when NVDA recovers to copy that part of your log to the clipboard.
@cachondo I have no idea how to retreave the loggs. Right now, i'm kind of asking myself, what was i thinking, trying that again. I was yelling and screaming at the top of my lungs, because, i couldn't go upstairs, to grabb my USB, that has 2024.1 on it. I think i'm just gonna pretend this never happened, and delete the portable coppy. That was not pleasant at all.
I explained how to get part of a log on your clipboard in my previous post. You can read about the NVDA log viewer in the user guide though, if you want to know more (it's section 15.1), or simply just send someone a copy of the log at %temp%\nvda.log That file is re-written each time you restart NVDA. If you need to send someone a copy of the previous log, that is, the one that was generated by the version of NVDA that started before the one you're currently using, you'll want to send %temp%\nvda-old.log instead.
If NVDA hangs but doesn't crash, it'll be the active log you need. if NVDA dies completely and you have to restart it, it'd be the older log.
I find I have to pres ctrl+alt+n to restart on very rare occasions but, when I do, it always pops up fresh and happy. Sometimes I need a system reboot, particularly when explorer or shell extensions go wrong. I guess you might expect a few more stability issues with SAPI rather than an addon, where the synthesis logic is all internal to the screen reader rather than hooking outside sources. Very fast event-driven text to speech will result in a lot of very quick communication between the processes, after all.
When it recovered, it was back on my main coppy. I had to kill the process in Task Manager. I would have never been able to get the logg, if i had to force kill it, and the main coppy started up. I couldn't even use the screenreader, making things a lot harder than they should have been. In retrospect, maybe trying that was not such a good idea. BTW, i had to use Narrator to get to task manager, and kill the process.
Thanks for helping investigate and troubleshoot - can you please send us your nvda.log & nvda-old.log files to us at info@nvaccess.org? They will include whatever that error was which was logged.
there's a big problem with that. To put it lightly, the screen reader was unusable. I had to use narrator to get to the task manager, kill that NVDA process. Unfortunately, there is probably no Logg at all, and if there is if you can tell me where it is in a directory, I can see if I can find it. Whatever this is seems to be dependent on the severity. Sometimes, it can recover easily, but this time for some reason it took me over 10 minutes to figure out how to kill the bad process, and restart on my main copy. Thankfully, I never installed the update for my main copy, because, I don't know how much worse the crash would have been.
Since i'm on my laptop, let me correct my bad phone'serrors.
If you press windows+e to open explorer, then alt+d to go to the address bar. Type %temp% (note the percent signs either side of the word temp) and press enter. In THAT directory are the nvda log files - nvda.log for the currently running or most recently running instance, nvda-old.log for the one before that, and also nvda_crash.dmp if NVDA itself has crashed. Please email those to us.

For a bit of time, specifically pipewire >=1.4, one can start pipewire as root. That includes the regular daemon and the alsa layer, because jack emulation is a library loaded inside programs. Anyway, more recently than that, pipewire-pulse got the ability to be launched via root, as a system service:
I'm not sure if ubuntu can use any of this yet, I suppose not, but most other distros which aren't debian based should be able to do so, for example arch, gentoo, probably nix and fedora starting with 42. This means that your system can start talking much, much sooner without the use of scripts, as long as you enable the system services instead of the user ones, or well, apparently the user units don't conflict, weird as that might sound. Either way, the same security is achieved, because who cares if root apps can listen to your microphone, the battle is lost if those apps are already root anyway!
In particular, this means that one can start espeakup with the system and it'll speak as soon as possible. Not in the initramfs, not at the enter decryption key prompt, but that's still huge progress in case your system crashes and so on.
What do y'all think, does this change anything, or it's still the same for you because you use scripts anyway, or because your systems rarely crash in such a way where that'd be required?
hotplug, what's the issue with hotplugging, it always worked here. Yeah, I believe all affected services have system variants, however user units don't conflict with the system ones, so probably it's fine, for our use case, to run wireplumber as user, except indeed in the case that the user session crashed and whatnot
There is hope with systemd-homed that we can do the encryption on a per-user basis so you'll be able to have voice/input assistants before any password is necessary.
There is also work to make virtual terminals done in user-space w/ a minimal kiosk-mode wayland compositor which would allow for a11y even on a "VT".
I actually hope to make Ptyxis work like that for Fedora in the not-distant future.
yes, from what I know, that's already a thing, technically. You can install it with orca enabled, then press alt+windows+s on the login screen to turn it on, and maybe again in the desktop? not sure. But yeah, definitely something that can be done, something I talked about with them before. No usb audio recognised and such, yeah, now that's a huge issue, that requires some serious troubleshooting. Maybe post about it in the a11y room, or in fedora's general support channel?

Ghostty will soon be visible to accessibility tooling on macOS. This is increasingly important in the world of AI since this means that tools like ChatGPT, Claude, etc. can now read Ghostty's screen contents too (with permission). This feature is also relatively rare!
Only the built-in Terminal, iTerm2, and Warp also support this. Kitty, Alacritty, and others are invisible to a11y on macOS.
Beyond the screen contents, Ghostty's structure is also visible, navigable, and resizable such as its split as can be seen in the attached video. Ghostty and iTerm2 are the only terminals that expose structure too (splits, tabs).
This is a v1 implementation that is primarily read-only. I plan on iterating and improving a11y interactions in future versions.
@miki I’m not totally sure. Right now our behavior mostly mimics iTerm. It’s admittedly not optimized for humans right now and more for AI (I note that in the PR), but the foundational work is all the same. It’s just all the last mile to get to the next spot.
My thinking thoigh was to break down the terminal into more accessibility groups e.g per command then per N lines of output, and notify AX framework that new data exists.
Autoreading on Mac is though (see that writeup I made on Github at one point) because Voice Over has no built-in queuing mechanism, and you really need one in a terminal. This is not a problem on any other platform, most screen readers let you decide whether you want new speech to interrupt all existing utterances or to queue up.
This means you basically need to handle speech yourself (Mac OS and all other platforms have APIs for that and they're decent), but that opens another can of worms, as then you need a way to manage speech preferences somehow.

@jonathan859 @Aryan It's only while you fire up the installer - the regular startup sound when you start NVDA itself is still there - that's the one you hear more often :)

to me, it feels like the sort of 'digital public infrastructure' thing (i.e. for the greater good) that governments should be funding. And whose code should be openly licensed so that no one who needs it has to do without.
Can someone please tell me what native selection mode actually does? I figure it could help me select photos so I can download them or something but it doesn't seem to be able to do that.
@rooktallon Normally when you select text on the web with NVDA (shift+arrows etc), it takes it from NVDA's virtual buffer, which ONLY contains text, so you lose formatting, images, etc. Native selection picks up everything: text, formatting, links, images etc. See download.nvaccess.org/releases… in the user guide for more details.
Note if you JUST want to save an image, you can usually do that by moving to it (G) then open the context menu and choose "Save image as"
@FreakyFwoof if you copy a configuration with autoconnect in remote set up to the secure screen thingy it worked with the old addon, so presumably it's still available in some form.
@cachondo Very, as those didn't break for me. I've just updated four machines, and all were successful. And I found a very naughty way of updating from old remote to new remote, without touching the other machine. Not recommended if you don't like ini files.
@FreakyFwoof ignore me, my bad. it's because I was using an addon I hadn't updated that James Scholes sent me, which cycles through the modes rather than just doing previous and next, which IMHO makes far more sense. But I'd forgotten I'd reassigned it before upgrading on this machine.
@FreakyFwoof ironically I've assigned the cycle gesture to both page up and down, to replicate the previous/next behaviour. But it does mean when I'm hopping between terminals and browse mode documents I don't need to remember which one I pressed last.
@cachondo @FreakyFwoof Why should you ever have to change that setting? Can you give me some examples including what terminal program you're using, because it should be automatic.
@tspivey I hop between wsl, powershell, VS code and a couple of browser windows and sometimes whatever logic keeps track doesn't seem to work. i.e. I can't review output in wsl with NVDA+up/down without switching mode if I've been using the same keys to review the screen of a windows dialog or the document from a browser. It's not often, but I do sometimes need to manually adjust the mode.
@cachondo It's nice they retained the sounds I made for the remote addon in core now, makes me feel like I actually contributed to something I use daily.
@cachondo That's what I've tried to do for 22 years of sound-design. I have one very important rule which is that a sound should not exceed standard speech volume. If it does, or if it's too jarring, it's the wrong sound for the job, unless the job actually calls for that kind of thing. Never been my bag though. I don't like sounds that pop out at the user like that. Never have.
@FreakyFwoof @cachondo NVDA's had a visual logo change since 2007 but by default the sounds haven't changed. I really do think something should be done about that... again.
Heheh, although I didn't create those new sounds, I did have some influence over which ones were chosen and how they should sound. But surely you remember the pain when we changed these briefly? I don't think anyone wants to go back there.
@jcsteh @KaraLG84 @FreakyFwoof I don't object to them specifically, just their volume. Especially when using NVDA on a computer that isn't your own, often with internal speakers that are subpar, They blare out in a frustrating fashion to my mind.
@cachondo @KaraLG84 @FreakyFwoof The prevailing argument against the new sounds, interestingly enough, was that some users with hearing impairments found them hard to hear and/or distinguish.
@cachondo @KaraLG84 @FreakyFwoof To be clear, I meant I had some influence over the choice of the new sounds from Andre and Kara. I wasn't involved with the creation of the very original sounds. I did create the spelling error, suggestions opened and suggestions closed sounds, though.

As another example, we've actually had several conversations over the years about changing the name NVDA. It's not an ideal name in a lot of ways: hard for people to remember, not catchy, etc. But changing it would break the world, hahaha.

I would suggest NVDA be called Galaxias, to keep up with the sea animals theme. JAWS, Orca, Dolphin... You know. It's a fish genus full of endangered Australian species, and sounds beautiful.

@tspivey @cachondo I just kind of roll with the 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' vibe. It has multiple letter navigation and I know what I need, so it works.
So, hopefully we'll be able to bring those sounds back one day - as an option for those who want them (along with the ability to change them still further if you choose)

@jcsteh @cachondo @FreakyFwoof Yeah. I remember you saying that the file sizes of mine were too large so I exported them at a lower bitrate and mono. That was something else some folk didn't like. I couldn't tell the difference.
@KaraLG84 @cachondo @FreakyFwoof Mmm, from memory, I also specified some requirements for them; two short chords, etc. Andre also made some startup sounds, trying to honour the old ones but more modern, but I wanted a complete break from that going to something more subtle. But many users didn't like it, so here we are. :)

@cachondo @KaraLG84 @FreakyFwoof I've considered creating an extension point over the years which lets an add-on replace the sounds. That way, we could just bundle the new sounds as a single add-on in the store. But I just don't care enough and I have way too many other things to do, heh.

Hell it might even happen before user config has been identified, and changing that would cause the start-up sound to have to be delayed, which might scare people or make them hammer it more for slower startups.

First in the program's own sounds folder, but also it looks for any sound files that you paste into your user settings directory. If it finds a sound file in your user folder, including the startup sound, it'll be used over the built-in one. I wonder if this would be viable to do for NVDA, or for things like playing the startup sound that happens before it starts looking to see where the user settings are.

@x0 @pitermach @jcsteh @cachondo @KaraLG84 On a sort of different note, to have remote access on login, there needs to be way more granularity when copying settings over. You can copy settings and all addons, or... Nothing. That seems a bit strange, especially these days. I have a 3 gig addons folder all-told so having to go and remove 99% of that after install is not going to be doable by non-power users. I'm just brainstorming here but is it just me? Did I misunderstand how that button works? Is it settings + addons or nothing? Can you *only* copy settings avoiding addons?

I always replace the default sounds everytime NVDA updates because some sounds, particularly focus mode sound, can trigger some problems with my ears. These are things you never think about until it happens to you. Luckily replacing them is very easy, but not having to do it at all would be very nice.
@talon FWIW, you can completely nuke focus/browse mode sounds, I haaaate the focus mode sound too. Control NVDA B, uncheck "Audio indication of focus and browse modes". @pitermach @x0 @jcsteh @cachondo @KaraLG84 @FreakyFwoof @NVAccess
@KaraLG84 @cachondo @FreakyFwoof hahaha, was just digging through GitHub and found my final comment on this: Question: Umm, shouldn't we give another try to a different sound pack, in the hope that something more likeable might be produced? My answer: No alternatives have been proposed over the years that don't fail to meet the requirements in #7218 in some way. From the feedback received, there isn't even sufficient clear, common detail on exactly what might address user concerns. We can't hope to fix an issue if there isn't enough objective data about what might actually fix it. Finally, going around and around on this just isn't a good use of time given other priorities; we've already sunk a decent amount of time into this and gained a grand sum total of nothing useful. @FreakyFwoof @KaraLG84 @jcsteh @cachondo A lot of it comes down to personal preference - the hearing issue for some users was compelling, but for a lot of users, it was simply what they prefer (and yes, many users preferred the new sounds, and many preferred the old sounds - since it wasn't overwhelming one way or the other, we felt the best option was to keep the status quo until we could give users more choice.
@FreakyFwoof @KaraLG84 @jcsteh @cachondo For what it's worth, given how much the program's UI and feature set have grown, such low-quality earcons make it feel like an cheap, low-quality application. Good sounds would really polish it from the user point-of-view.
@sclower @FreakyFwoof @KaraLG84 @cachondo To some extent, it's subjective. As I said earlier, we already tried to change this once and we got a lot of user backlash. Sometimes, you can't win, and in those cases, it's generally best just to leave it alone, especially when you don't have objective, evidence based data to back up your decision to change.
@FreakyFwoof @cachondo VS Code could definitely learn from that for its accessibility sounds / audio cues system. The "task completed" sound in particular feels more like beating a final boss in a video game, not something you hear every 5 seconds.
Hearing it after struggling with some non-working code for half an hour is definitely satisfying, though.
The increased responsiveness with SAPI and OneCore is lovely stuff! When I stream here I've been taking a productivity hit to have more human-sounding voices for the audience. Always assumed it was unfixable, but here we are, fixed! Thanks! :D
@Scott I'm guessing OneCore is still going to get laggy if you throw it a fairly long string, since OneCore can't stream in chunks, which is really damned annoying. I'm actually wondering whether it might be worth using the SAPI hack to access OneCore like we originaly considered. The downside is you can't access the faster speeds that way. With rate boost being available with SAPI5 now, that might be less of an issue, though I suspect that will be less intelligible for most people than the voice's own faster rates.
Congratulations on the release! Looking forward to updating when I can. Just a quick question, I already have the NVDA Remote Add-on installed, should I remove this before updating?
@CallumStoneman It will get disabled when you update. You will need to go into NVDA's Remote Access settings to enable the (new) feature and then you should be able to use it again. Broadly similar to the old add-on, but some things may be slightly different. Here is the user guide section on it: download.nvaccess.org/releases…
@mhussain If you've got the RC installed, you're on the "beta / RC" channel, so NVDA won't update to 2025.1 (stable) but you will automatically update to the next beta we put out (eg 2025.2 Beta 1) - if you'd like to install NVDA 2025.1 (stable), you can run the launcher from either the release announcement or the download page: nvaccess.org/download/ (that will put you back on the "Stable" channel, so you won't be notified about the next beta, but you'll likely see it here first anyway!)
