If you're like me, then you were really happy to learn about Mastodon's enthusiastic support for image descriptions, and you were really eager to join in.

Then you went to actually write something and realized you have no idea how to present visual information in a way that is helpful/enjoyable to those who are #VisuallyImpaired or #Blind.

I found this guide really informative: uxdesign.cc/how-to-write-an-im…

Of course, I'd also love to hear any additional tips y'all might have!

Just found out that the open source Python library for converting webpages to PDF, Weasyprint, has recently added experimental support for creating tagged PDFs that conform with PDF/UA:
weasyprint.org/

This is really exciting as there aren’t many open source options for doing this. I’m going to have a play and try creating an @eleventy plugin for this!

Speaking of #Pinafore, based on a blog post from Nolan Lawson, it looks like it might not be maintained too much into the future. That's sad, but I totally respect that. I just contributed some a11y pull requests, but I'm now wondering whether I need to focus on the official UI instead. Hmm. nolanlawson.com/2022/11/22/tho…

Was just searching #pinafore and this was prescient. It's good that Nolan forecast the situation. Just want to let you know since you contributed, and I understand the tech debt concerns he had, that I'm operating a fork of Pinafore to allow it to continue on in relation to contributor interest.

I'm operating the fork via the Collective Code Construction Contract which is pretty lightweight and clear as far as maintenance goes. You can find the fork and more about that at github.com/weex/pinafore

This post by @nolan, the developer of the Pinafore web client, on Mastodon is excellent. His warnings about Mastodon and our social habits are important for us to consider. I agree that we should truly consider its future.

This could be good for competition. I wish a regulator would do the same for screen readers particularly on iOS. If blind people had a choice, perhaps Apple would lift its game and not allow VoiceOver bugs to remain unresolved for so long. UK Begins Market Investigation into Apple and Google's Mobile Dominance

Chemist Rachel Fuller Brown was born #OTD in 1898. She discovered the antifungal antibiotic nystatin while doing research for the NY State Department of Health, hence the name.

Rather than keep the profits from the drug, Brown (standing in the photo) and co-discoverer Elizabeth Hazen assigned nystatin’s patent royalties to the nonprofit Research Corporation of New York, to help support other researchers.

I've launched a #Mastodon instance focused on #AudioDescription. This is a space where professionals and fans can come together to learn, advocate, and work together towards the goal of quality AD in all environs. The server is bare-bones right now, so your patience is requested as we build things out. You can also make an impact by boosting this news across your networks. mindblowing new discovery in Conway's Game of Life: any buildable pattern in Life can be constructed from the collision of 15 gliders.

the key principle: distance itself can be used to encode information. by determining the correct starting [x,y] coordinate for each glider, any future state of the Life universe can be created, with effectively unbounded complexity. 🤯

Leftist economic propaganda

Have you heard that government spending is somehow a bad thing?

I wrote this in October.

"The purpose of government in a democracy is to do things for We the People to make our lives better."

@reflex I'm in no way affiliated with the Thunderbird project besides being a donor. If you want good support for Exchange you can check out "Owl" (beonex.com/owl/), which is a plugin for Thunderbird. There's a free trial period so you can check it out, and after that the price is worth my money at least :)

93% of Paint Splatters are Valid Perl Programs
mcmillen.dev/sigbovik/

> In this paper, we aim to answer a long-standing open problem in the programming languages community: is it possible to smear paint on the wall without creating valid Perl?

> We answer this question in the affirmative: it is possible to smear paint on the wall without creating a valid Perl program. We employ an empirical approach, using OCR software, which finds that merely 93% of paint splatters parse as valid Perl.

One thing I noticed when first joining #mastodon and running an instance, is that the quality of content on open relays are just horrible.

So I decided to create a moderated / curated relay. Mostly targeted toward smaller instances that want to bootstrap to the federation but don't want all the noise.

It is still a new relay with only about 25 small instances connected, but I hope that in the future it can provide quality content.

the Relay is: relay.neovibe.app/

To all my #blind #Mac #VoiceOver users, I made a demo that I hope some here may find beneficial. Please do share if you feel like it. Why Turning Off VoiceOver Cursor Tracking can be Really Useful:
