👉 "The core issue is that open source contributors are not paid fairly. 60% of open-source maintainers are unpaid volunteers, and just 13% make a living as professional project maintainers, according to the 2023 State of the Open Source Maintainer Report."

Boosts appreciated 🚀

👋 Hi, #scholars, tell us, why are you on #Mastodon?

🔍 We are researching how and why academics use Mastodon compared to other platforms. Is it key for #academic #discourse?

🔜 We'll launch our #research survey by mid-October, so stay tuned.

📣 Meanwhile: what features of Mastodon do you find most valuable for academic discourse?
And which other questions should we include in our research, you think?

Did you know elephants are helping shape robot design?

Their trunks' precise movements have been inspiring new tech innovations for 20 years. Researchers are using the insights to create robotic limbs with precise grips that can work to pick up objects in the unpredictable real world:

Yep, a self-healing metal.

Scientists have discovered that metal-halide perovskite, a next-generation semiconductor material, can self-heal from radiation damage in space. And this could be a game-changer for space-based solar panels and future power generation.

Today I discovered a new PDF reader, that I think folks doing research will like a lot.

It's called Sioyek [^1] and it's something of a software for power users. It minimal, with VIM style key bindings and hidden keyboard shortcuts. The website shows a great deal of the cool features, I will just mention a very nice addition I'm enjoying.

You can right click a reference in the document, and a small rectangle overlay will show you the linked content without moving your current view, so you do not lose track of where you started.

It's very useful to peek at an equation or a citation and keep reading afterwards.

🌅 Good morning.

New #research from Consumer Reports offers a rare look into the scope of Meta's online surveillance.

It goes way beyond what most may expect—Meta can know many of the websites you visit and even what you’re doing IRL.

We measure how much snails eat in a given time period 🐌🥬

First, cut out lettuce discs carefully, to standardized the amount of food to start.

Second, give these lettuce discs to snails, and wait like 20-24h.

Lastly, fish up the leftover lettuce to scan and measure the area.

It’s a nice measurement for their activity 🐌🍃

I wrote a bot that parses the current #Mastodon instances and assigns them to the respective #ASN (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASN).

Interesting is the concentration on a few top ASN. Here for example the 10 most frequent ASNs as Pie Chart (as of 11/25/2022).

❤️ Thanks to @TheKinrar for the nice API for receiving the current mastodon instances.

I’m doing a project featuring little-known women of science as a part of my studies as a lab technician.
I’ll be drawing some portraits and illustrating the research and discoveries of some interesting scientists✨

Let’s start!
