Itās Mid-2022 and Browsers (Mostly Safari) Still Break Accessibility via Display Properties ā Adrian Roselli
Grat article with tons of updates on this topic. Thanks @aardrian

It was late 2020 when I last tested how browsers use CSS display properties to break the semantics of elements.Adrian Roselli
Remember in August when I gave a talk about HTML tables for the WebAIM online conference?
That video is online!
I have embedded it on my site:

I spoke at the 2024 Web Accessibility in Mind Conference (in partnership with PopeTech). As soon as the video is available I will embed it.Adrian Roselli
For me, @joplinapp@mastodon.social is the most important #ToDo and #wiki tool for my efficient daily #work and #organization.
With the new version, there are some improvements for #accessibility, such as the use of #screenreaders.
I hope #blind people can enjoy this #app.

A big shout out to everyone at #A11yCamp yesterday. Sean spent a very informative day there leaning and networking on all the latest in #A11y / #Accessibility!
Photos are Sean with Riley Busch from the department of education, and a view of the Clarendon Auditorium filling up before the event started
As noted on the banner in the first photo, A11y Camp is Australia's premier conference on digital accessibility and inclusion.
Just found this article stating that using the #language #attribute for individual words within a text is not a good idea when you want #ScreenReader users to have a good #UX. It's just overengineered #a11y.
I'm a bit surprised as you always read otherwise (as the article also mentions).
Are some screen reader users here that can share their experiences? I'm really curious now š¤

I really feel sorry for the public sector employees working on meeting this #a11y deadline for PDFs.
"PDFs are where services go to die."
No doubt the people working on this will be super under-resourced, and actually meeting this deadline won't be seen as much of a win by anyone, but not meeting it has legal and dire consequences.
To be clear more #a11y is good! Under-resourcing teams is not!

One of the themes which came through from the NVDA Satisfaction Survey earlier this year, was to improve Braille support. To help us target the most needed improvements, we have created a short survey. If you use NVDA with braille at least some of the time, please consider completing this survey.

It seems time again to remind everyone not to use ARIA `menu` roles for web site navigation:
adrianroselli.com/2017/10/dontā¦
From a technical perspective, there is no such thing as ādropdownsā:
adrianroselli.com/2020/03/stopā¦
That imprecise terminology leads to more miscommunication between sales folks, designers, and devs than is necessary. Then weird stuff gets built from scratch instead of leaning on existing patterns.
You should dismiss articles that conflate the two.
There are two solutions to ARIA Live Region issues:
1. Donāt use ARIA Live Regions (but use focus, dialogs, or other managing of whatās going on)
2. Put the live region in the DOM at page load (They cost nothing. If you need an alert and a status, put two divs in with both roles.)
See more in these slides:
I am glad `<datalist>` saw some fixes in Safari, as spotted by @adactio adactio.com/journal/21445
However, other bugs (such as the ones I link from JAWS and Firefox) are still open as well as voice control challenges and text size issues:

So nothing likely changes in your support landscape. Yes, this still makes me sad.
People on StackOverflow telling people to screw up #accessibility with the HTML dialog element defeats the purpose of using that element in the first place IMO. The Access Text Network (a US platform where some publishers share accessible PDFs of their books on demand to authorized users) has gradually been coming back online after it collapsed this spring as a result of some kind of disagreement between Georgia Tech and the Association of American Publishers.š¤
My work was only granted access to the new AccessText today, and the collection has to be built back up over time book by book.
