How would people feel about a future version of Bookface removing the engagement counts from the Action Button? Now that the response info is reduced to an icon and a number the count on the Action Button with the same icon is redundant and makes the UI unnecessarily cluttered.
I know since the beginning of Bookface some people have found the engagement counts on the buttons too "busy" or "distracting" but before I remove them I thought I'd ask how people feel about that?
I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but sometimes the engagement counts and responses don't agree. I *think* this is because the engagement counts are subtracting your own interactions? So in the screenshot above it's not counting my 2 comments and not counting my "Like" on the buttons, but is counting them in the response totals. Getting rid of the counts on the buttons would eliminate this inconsistency.
Thoughts?
This update has a LOT of changes and fixes in it! I think I got in everything everyone who gave me feedback asked for (check the README file "Changelog" section for details). Lots of attention paid to making buttons, tabs, and drop-down appearance consistent, and lots of new CSS variables for customization plus a new option for customizing Bookface (more on that in a moment).
Bookface 1.8 has been tested with both the current stable 2024.12 and 2025.7 Release Candidate versions.
The most obvious change you'll probably notice is that the responses below posts and comments now look completely different:
And below an Event Post:
If multiple people engaged with the post in a certain way you no longer have to click the count to see the list, it's a popover that appears on hover (active on touch devices). This is a lot cleaner and more consistent with how these are displayed on other social media platforms.
You'll also notice that the Main Menu missing icons are in place. This is a change that's coming in the next Friendica release anyway, but Bookface lets you have it right now:
Someone specifically asked whether the main navigation buttons could have labels on them:
I didn't turn it on by default, but nav button labels are now coded into Bookface and if you're using CSS variable customization they're easy to turn on:
:root {
--show-navbar-labels: block;
}The label text is also customizable. Until now the only way to implement such customizations was either for a server admin to manually put them into the header or footer sitewide or for individual users to put them in a user content stylesheet just for your web browser. That's why I'm also releasing a new Friendica addon called "Bookface Custom" that, if your server admin installs it, allows you to customized every one of the Bookface CSS variables to your heart's content.
Get 'em while they're hot:
* Bookface 1.8
* Bookface User Styles 1.8
* Bookface Custom Addon 1.0

Looks like I picked the wrong week to start using Friendica.
Crashes across all interfaces, takes forever to load. Maybe, if you collapsed all comments by default, just maybe it wouldn't be crunching so hard. Bluesky integration fails completely. Oh well, seemed perfect for me, in the abstract. I learned quite a lot about the potential. Think I just need to make Mastodon my one stop-shop instead.
I'm considering changing the engagement details below posts and comments now that Bookface shows icons for them. The current appearance is a vertical list, which can leave a lot of unused space to the right of it, plus all the explanatory text feels redundant and visually cluttering to me:
So I'm considering eliminating the explanatory text and going with a horizontal list of just names (for single interactions) and counts (that trigger the pop-over list) like this:
But that got me to an option with just icons and counts, which is similar to how Facebook and Misskey/Sharkey show reactions/engagements:
Which is what I'd prefer as it looks the cleanest and most consistent.
Thoughts on this proposed change? (I really wish Friendica had polls for this sort of thing!)
The Postbox and Zen Postbox add-ons have been updated with a bunch of new styles!
* Solid Colors renamed to match HTML color names
* 24 new solid colors added
* 5 new gradient backgrounds added
* 17 new pattern backgrounds added
* 11 animated backgrounds added
* Fixed the load order so it overrides Postbox styles in Bookface if present
The previous solid color names have been mapped to the new ones, so any existing Postboxes in your feed using the old names will still look good.
The gradient backgrounds were ones that got missed from the initial release and are similar to the ones Facebook used to offer.
The pattern backgrounds all use pure CSS, no images, so they will render fast and do not incur an additional resource load from the server.
The animated backgrounds are exclusively available on servers that use either of the two add-ons. None of the animated styles are included in the Bookface scheme because some of them use SVG images. They use pure CSS animation as well, no JS code or animated GIF images.

These are the changes and fixes in this release:
* Restyled βNew Messageβ button to make it more obvious.
* Fixed Profile Pics and Cover Photos not working in old iOS browsers
* Moved Postbox styles to the end of the stylesheet
* Minified Postbox CSS.
* Restyled Item Responses
* Action Buttons youβve interacted with before now adopt accent color.
* Fix for disabled Action Buttons to make it clear they are disabled.
* Fixed issue with slow-loading secondary toolbar in Safari
* Updated with Postbox version 1.1 styles
β names of solid colors now match HTML color names
β 24 new solid colors
β 5 new gradient backgrounds
β 17 new pattern backgrounds
Some of these will be fairly obvious. The big one is that the Action Buttons below posts and comments used to change to the accent color on hover and there was no indicator if youβd previously interacted with any of them. NOW they have a slight shift in darkness/lightness on hover and the accent color indicates youβve previously clicked the Like, Dislike, Share, or Event buttons (the exceptions being Comment or Quote). If a post's scope is limited (not public) the "Share" and "Quote" buttons are now obviously disabled by being faded out.
Engagement Counts also now show an icon indicating the type of engagement, which should make it easier to see what kind of engagement a post or comment is getting. And if there are 2+ the individuals are revealed in a pop-over box rather than pushing the entire layout down.
The new Postbox pattern backgrounds are done with pure CSS, no images! So theyβll load and display fast and donβt incur additional server calls. Postboxes are just a nice looking way to dress up your text-only posts. Of course only Friendica users will see them, and only if they are using the Bookface scheme or their instance has installed one of the Postbox add-ons. The styling doesnβt transfer to other platforms (Note: there are still issues with Postbox posts shared to Diaspora and Hubzilla).
Thank you to everyone who gave me feedback, reported issues, and tested things for me to help improve Bookface for everyone. :D

I could use some #FediHelp .
As my long-running readers are probably aware, I schedule a _lot_ of posts in advance. I use @bufferapp for this, and I am largely satisfied with this, except for one thing:
They have a fixed character limit of 500 for posts, and thus I cannot make use of the full 10,000 characters of my instance.
This is bad, since most of my scheduled posts are German folk tales exceeding this character limit, and thus I am forced to use screenshots instead of plain texts - which is terrible from an #accessibility point of view (yes, there are readers that can identify the text, but I'd rather use plain text in the first place). So I am looking for alternatives. Here are my requirements:
- It must have a web interface I can use on my desktop PC - I grew up with proper screens and keyboards, and while I _can_ use a smart phone or tablet for complex stuff, I do not find the experience enjoyable.
- It must have a calendar view instead of being a simple, scrollable list - I often schedule posts weeks in advance, and I want to be able to keep track of what is scheduled.
- It must make full use of the character limits of each instance.
- It must allow for scheduling threads - quite a few of the tales I am posting exceed the 10,000 character limit.
- It must work with #Mastodon . While I am aware that other #Fediverse systems (such as #Friendica ) have scheduling options of their own, switching to an entirely different system is a drastic step that I only want to explore when all other options have been exhausted.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
@RaccoonForFriendica This weekend I took some time to investigate how much work would be needed to build an iOS version of the app, and it turned out that at least building and running a basic version of the app is doable with some minor changes (see here).

@Friend Icare #Friendica is using external media (like youtube) directly and does not "proxify" them. For YT videos there is or was an addon for redirecting it to an #Invidious instance. Since Google started blocking such instances, there are only a few working left. My favorite is inv.nadeko.net . So your administrator needs configure it unless not yet done.
For the other external references, I have no idea, just block 3rd-party cookies, I guess.

I moved the #Friendica Wiki to another server. I need some people to test it and see if all works. I will then solve the problems pointed out.
The initial setup was not done by me. It was still on a server with php 7.4 because it did not work with 8.x due to some plugins. I removed those plugins, apparently not maintained since 2014.
I also saw that it loads some js from some CDN, I don't like that either, so tips welcome on that. Maybe there is a plugin that stores such stuff locally?
Also can you suggest a free service to analyze your webpage, show problem, broken links and such?
I saw that the Avatar (only a systemwide standard avatar for all users) is not displayed in my Firefox, but looks fine on Chromium. May be a DNS issue, so local issue only, seems tailscale some how messes up my DNS resolution. But please have a look for any embedded stuff that does not load!
Send me screenshots if you like and/or links to the problem page.
Here is the wiki.friendi.ca
Friendica has a LOT of feeds. Too many really. It's confusing. Overwhelming. Oh, and they're apparently called TIMELINES here. I've been trying to figure out which ones I should be using that are similar to the ones I used on Facebook.
Over on Facebook most people probably never go beyond the very awful "News Feed" which is full of algorithm-driven, AI-generated, and advertising garbage. And the only people, groups, or pages you see there are the ones you regularly interact with. Which is why for years I've been using the other feeds on Facebook, and they're the only thing that actually makes that platform usable IMO. But it's hard to try and figure out what Friendica "Timelines" are the closest corollary to the Facebook ones?
My best guesses are:
What's Hot = News Feed: It's a fire hose of posts from accounts you don't follow that are getting a lot of engagement. However, I have no clue what kinds of interactions or how many get something into this feed. There is also a "Discover" feed that says it's supposed to show "Posts from accounts that you don't follow but might like" and I have no clue how, without an algorithm, it would determine what I might like. Apparently it doesn't or can't because that feed is empty for me.
Latest Activity = All Feed: because it's based on people you're connected to and shows all their latest interactions (Posts, Likes, Shares, and Comments) including on posts by accounts you don't follow.
For You = Friends Feed: which I think is just posts from people listed as "Mutual Friendship" in your Contacts, meaning you are following them, they are following you.
Latest Activity + Circles/Account Types > Groups = Groups Feed: there doesn't appear to a separate Groups feed in Friendica.
Latest Activity + Circles > Interests = Pages Feed: at least I think "Interests" is referring to "Pages" but I'm not sure, and there doesn't appear to be a separate "Interests" feed.
It would be nice if you could filter the "Network" feeds by more than one thing at a time. There is no way to "stack" filters or save that view. Which is too bad because that would be a killer feature akin to Bluesky's custom algorithms!
As for the other "Timelines" in Friendica:
"Latest posts" and "Latest Creation" are obviously because stuff doesn't necessarily arrive on your server at the same time it was sent from another one. Though I'm not sure anything posted to social media is so time-sensitive you'd need these feeds since I assume the same stuff will show up under "Latest Activity."
"Personal" only shows posts that @ mention you. "Sharers of Sharers" sounds like a feed of what you would call "Friends of Friends" on Facebook. It's unclear what puts someone in "Quiet Sharers" though. It sounds like "Mutual Friendships" that just don't post much, but how often is often?
I'm guessing "Starred" means posts I've LIKED? Or does it only mean posts I've actually gone to the "More..." drop-down and selected "Add Star"? Or BOTH?
"Images," "Audio," and "Video" are pretty self-explanatory, I guess if you're here for the photos, podcasts, and TikTokish content. I've also seen on servers that have a lot of add-ons enabled people might have additional feeds for other platforms they are connected to, which are self-explanatory.
"Local Community" and "Global Community" appear to be the same feeds as under the "Community" button in the main navigation. Which is redundant, but okay.
Then I've also seen instructions for new users to go into Settings > Social Networks > General Social Media Settings and change the drop-down to "Any conversation my follows interact with, including likes" or your feeds will be pretty bare.
It's little wonder this confuses people coming from other platforms. It's...a lot.
wiki.friendi.ca/docs/move-acco⦠mentions "Please consider that this is only possible on servers with open registration. On other systems only the administrator can add accounts with an uploaded file."
I run an instance where registrations require admin approval, how do I as administrator import a user's account export from another server into my server?
Hi there @islieb? !
This is a post actually directed in part to the @Friendica Support forum page of our free open source software community. I guess you heard the term #friendica already, as you are quite a while in the fedi, beginning with your #diaspora presence a long time ago. Our main coder @Michael Vogel is a fan of yours (if I got that right). I asked him the other day in a FOSDEM element chat, if he considers it possible that you make some drawings for friendica, maybe even for every new version, we have like two o three releases every year.
The idea came up because on this server we decided to use the following comic on the login/welcome page:
Than we came up with this variation for the text as you can see:
It seemed to me that Michael liked the idea to have some drawing by you, so I don't want to let the idea slip away and ask you, as well as the community, what everyone thinks about such an option. There are also the 403, 404, 500 and so on error pages. Well maybe those are more a task for @isfies!, who knows ..
Sumasumarum, any ideas, comments or questions about this proposal @all ?

#friendica Q&A @Tutorial
How does the setting:'php_path' =>, definable in the /config/local.config.php or by the console via /bin/console config work exactly?
The setting 'php_path' => '/usr/bin/php', that actually also shows up in the crontab -e file doesn't exist as an existing folder structure and/or file, at least on this standard ubuntu server installation, but was the original setting of this instance when we ported it from a friendica beta hosting service over here to a single IP VPS server with a single domain. And till now with that setting this instance ran quite well.
Where does /usr/bin/php actually point to, by whom is ist accessed (www-data?) and is there a way to change the reference it points to (if it is actually a reference inside friendica)?
On this server, in the case of the installed friendica versions 2024.xx we set this to:'php_path' => '/etc/php/8.1/fpm/' and for now the display in the admin panel looks quite right:PHP version 8.1.31 php.ini /**/8.1/fpm/php.ini

@Peter VΓ‘gner Aside note:
As far as I know, you can only send posts to a Friendica forum with an exclamation mark to have them forwarded to all members. But you cannot do that with comments, not in a conversation whose (start) post did not go to that forum.
On Friendica and all its descendants, a reply is never a stand-alone post. It's always a comment on another post.
Thus, mentioning a Friendica forum in a comment with an exclamation mark is futile.

@Peter VΓ‘gner @Dieguito π¦π§π»βπ»π How conversations work is not unified all across the Fediverse. Even how connections work is not unified.
Mastodon has taken over the follower/followed principle from Twitter which is always illustrated with arrows with one point. A following B is illustrated with an arrow from A to B. A being followed by B is illustrated with an arrow from B to A. A and B following each other mutually is illustrated with one arrow from A to B and one arrow from B to A.
It appears to me that Friendica has adopted this to become more compatible with Mastodon. But its several descendants, created by Friendica's own creator, starting with Hubzilla, haven't.
Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte still have the bidirectional "connection" or "contact" as the default. It's illustrated with one arrow, but with one point on each end.
Also, all three understand a threaded conversation as an enclosed contruct entirely owned by the conversation starter. Everyone on these three who has the start post on their stream always actually has the whole thread on their stream.
In fact, all three have Conversation Containers implemented. This feature was originally created in the streams repository in 2022. Forte has had it from the get-go as it started out as a fork of (streams). It was eventually turned into FEP-171b and backported to Hubzilla last year.
All three make sure that everyone who has a post on their stream also always has all comments on that post, at least those that are made after they have received the post.
This works on two basic principles:
In a pure Hubzilla/(streams)/Forte system, your above example would look like this:
Much simpler than explaining everything with "following" and "being followed", isn't it?
Now, the conversation works like this.
The only mentioning that occurs here, if any, is User 4 mentioning User 3. This is not necessary for User 4's post to reach anyone. This is only necessary to make sure on Hubzilla (which doesn't have a tree view) that User 4 is replying to User 3's comment and not to User 2's post.
On Mastodon, for comparison, everything depends on who follows whom, who mentions whom and whose instance knows whose instance.

@RaccoonForFriendica version 0.4.1-beta11 has been released yesterday and is available for testing.
Its "latest and greatest" are:
- tags in post headers in your timeline (if that post is included due to you following one orore hashtags);
- new post detail layout which makes it easier to view relationships between posts and replies and load more replies on demand.
The initial depth of nesting (higher values imply loading will be less performant, lower values imply you'll see more often the "load more replies" button due to threads being partially downloaded).
It is the best I can do with the current Mastodon APIs but it looks ok-ish and, which is more important to the user who asked for this feature I guess, it makes it easier to follow conversations.
Let me know what you think, and if I accidentally broke anything and in the meantime, as usual, #livefasteattrash

Problems with embedded videos in posts
Hello @Friendica Support
Why when I create a post and embed a video (I upload the video to my friendica storage) I always find it at the bottom of the page? I'll give you an example , I create the post like this
ABCabcAbcABC....I write something..... then I embed some videos from youtube like this,
and finally I insert the hashtags
I click on preview and everything is perfect , when I click on share, I publish my post, and I find the attachment of the video that I inserted at the end after the hashtags
What kind of formatting should I use? I've tried various combinations, I normally write my posts in Joplin notes, then I copy and paste. But I created this post directly "Create new Post" but nothing changes
